I can’t agree with you on this one. This pick is too important. We’re looking at passing on a 1OA talent for a guy I like btw (Leonard), but not at 5.

The fact we’re considering this is maddening.
I have growing doubts that Leonard will even be available at 5OA so our ‘disagreement’ may well be moot.

Love this time of year!!!

I don't like that comparison, personally. Matthew Tkachuk is a pretty brilliant player offensively and always has been. He's an amazing puck distributor on top of everything else. He's also a 100 point scorer which I don't think Leonard can be.
It took him 6 years in the league to become the Tkachuk you're describing.

He was not the Tkachuk we see today when he was 18 years old... I don't see why Leonard couldn't get there eventually, he definitely has all the tools necessary IMO.

Just FYI I'm pretty sure the 57 games are cumulative - they include the 17 games listed in the USHL
NTDP season ticket holder here. You are correct. Leonard played a total of 57 games last season. That total includes games versus NCAA, USHL and international teams. The way stats lines for the NTDP are listed on some websites can be confusing (and sometimes incorrect). The best place to get NTDP player stats like this is directly from the NTDP website.

U.S. National Under-18 Team - 2022-23 Regular Season - Roster - #9 - Ryan Leonard - F

I feel like whoever gets carlsson is going to be the big winner of this draft.. Bedard aside.

Carlsson has his warts also apparently.

He's viewed as this big two-way center but he mainly played wing lately...

Some scouts out there doubt his ability to be an effective 2way center in the NHL.

There is absolutely no way Leonard is picked between 2-4. That would be enough to fire a GM on the spot

If Grier prefers Leonard to Smith, I could see it happening.

We don't know anything for sure, but it seems highly probable it goes Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson.

After that, Grier could go Smith, Leonard, or Michkov. Hughes could also take from the two of those 3 that are left, or Reinbacher, Benson, or Dvorsky...

Less than a week to find out reality, and leave speculation behind.

So if HuGo finds Michkov too risky, would swapping 5 for 6 and also 31 for 12 sound lik a good plab B?

At A draft then LA GM Dean Lombardi (while he was building a future Stanley Cup champion team) said: "When you choose to move down, the important thing is (that) you still get your guy when your turn comes up".

And what about Arizona also wanting Leonard?

What's the point in trading down?

No one thought Tkachuk would score 100 points in his draft year. If they did, he would have gone 2nd or 3rd overall.

Not that I think the proposed trade is realistic/likely but the point of trading down is to improve that 2nd 1st round pick 12th vs 31st is a big difference. The point of trading up is to secure the guy you really really want.

It requires the team trading down to think there are a bunch of equal prospects, and the team trading up to think that there is 1 guy who is above the rest.

You didn't just explain to me how trading down and up works?

The fact that despite so many mysteries which still surround Michkov, that every single one of Mackenzie's scouts still have him in the top 5. Including ranges as high as 2, should speak volumes about the certainty he'd be the BPA, and how dumb it would be to pass.

And it only validates what the Michkov camp has been preaching in here forever.

How come you can't see that all this flash Michkov is pulling off against mediocre opposition will not necessarily make him the next Gretzky?
