wow we really suck at drafting or developing... its either or.

The problem is also the rumors of him re-signing for 2 more years.

Terrible line of thinking, there's no way even the best scouts can know this.

I put up full game vids from his VHL games (since the KHL geo blocks any of my vids) but the copyright police got me so I stopped. I went in order from his first game of the season and had every game or 4 of the first 5 or whatever it was.

Who knows what the Habs are being offered, if say the Caps got desperate and offered a couple 1st picks, then you have to listen and think long and hard about what you want to. So who knows what Hughes is up to at this

Cheers; he does not seem out of place against pros at all In those clips… If I did not know he was yet undrafted I might mention the telegraphed (oft turned over) passes and the room for explosiveness in his first few strides… but he’s impressive for a teen. Clearly has great hands and skill.

He'll be attending the draft it seems so hopefully any interested teams will be able to get the chance to talk to him then to see what his intentions are concerning if or when he's planning on coming over to the NHL to clear up any rumors or concerns out there hopefully.

I remember when Blake Wheeler was a surprise off the board pick at #5...

Looking back, it was a tremendous move.

I'm just not buying in this Leonard mania,
KH name dropped the Tkachuks and suddenly he is better than he was with no more games played. He can play their style he probably never gets near their production
I still think we better take the Michkov bet
If not I' d take Smith, Benson, Reinbacher in that order before Leonard :dunno:

Zachary Fucale 7th OA.

LFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Horrible take. But he still got some right, but lehkonen in the 1st round in the 20's even thought he went at the bottom of the 2nd round.

Suzuki will be 29 with 2 years to go on his deal by then. So you're pretty much looking at a retool around an unproven (in the NHL) Michkov at that point.
29 is still young enough to be in his prime.

I mean obviously I'd rather him come in 3 years. But if he comes in 5, if he's good, he should be effective right away. There's less of a gap between Europe and the NHL styles of play now that there's less hooking and holding in the NHL. It didn't take Kaprizov long to adapt after being in Russian for 5 years post draft.

If the Caps are motivated and assuming their main focus is the player and not geopolitics (they have a healthy contingent of Russians in their ranks as it is), then this could really get interesting fast for Hughes, indeed. The draft floor should be more riveting than usual.

Nick could still be effective, but he wouldn't be part of the Habs long-term plan, so it make the timetable ridiculously tight.

I’m taking that bet (or any bet)

MTL are not taking Michkov

There is NOTHING sure ….
Is this an existential axiom or do you mean for all intents and purposes we can’t know for sure anyone present in Nashville is going to be better than anyone else?

Except for Bedard, yes we don't know how is gonna end up the best player. It could easily be someone in the 4th round

I still haven't seen one valid reason NOT to draft Michkov, the only hiccup to me is the 3 year wait. I have no doubt in my mind he will come to North America. Where are all these fears coming from? And even if your perceived fears are somehow legit in you minds, I don't see how the gamble isn't worth the reward.

If Michkov is available at 5 it makes no sense not to draft him.

People are saying it's easy as a fan to say that, you're not running a billion dollar entity. Does anyone really think that the cash cow that is the Montreal Canadiens are going to be hurting for profit by picking the Russian? Or will they just continue to churn profit year after year?

Will anyone ever really fault Hughes for picking Michkov? I'm not sure how you could.

Will someone please tell me once and for all, what in the hell the actual risk is??

Nobody is saying Michkov isn't talented. But the dramatics here over the possibility that he may not be our pick is outrageous. People are ready to trade Caufield plus our pick just to move up to top 3 so we're assured to get him. It's so over the top for a player that I guarantee nobody has seen play. Maybe some highlight videos, but that's it. You read a few articles that compare this guy to Gretzky and people buy that like it's gospel.
I agree that some are over dramatic about certainly players not just Michkov. It goes in cycles on this board.
I watched Michkov at the U-18's and he was clearly to me the best player in that event. I seen he again at the WJC and he was fantastic there as well and I wish they didn't cancel it. I think he's in the same category as Bedard.

The biggest problem currently is no one knows what the Habs are going to do. The speculation from fans and the Media is just that, speculation. Example Hughes smiled when talking about a player so he must be the pick, or they didn't draft from this country before so they won't draft this player, or Hughes talked to someone's parents So it must be that player. There really isn't anything there to form a solid opinion. The Habs won't show their hand, Hughes and company are better than that.

I’m taking that bet (or any bet)

MTL are not taking Michkov
I don’t know who they’re going to take. I’ll be in a development mindset on Day 2 post draft, trying to squeeze the most out of Leonard or Reinbacher. Mitchkov might not be the best or the 2nd best player in the draft. There could be a Nick Lidstrom or a Patrick Roy in Round 4. I would not bet my house that Bedard becomes the best for sure either.

What I can do is focus on two players and tell you who I think is better. For example, I can tell you unless there’s a tragic life incident, Leonard can‘t be better than Michkov. Leonard does too many errant passes. Too many passes where he thinks a player might be and he’s not there. Too many mind boggling turnovers. Too many bad angle low percentage shots with one or two players open. And certainly infinitely more that his two linemates to believe he doesn’t have certain offensive challenges. Those things are already cast in stone at 18, there’s no realistic change there. They might pick him @5, but the GM will need to have balls the size of planets. I’ll have my popcorn ready.

This fan thinks 3-5 year wait is 2-4 years too long. Nowhere even close to a « go » for me.. You cannot say my reason is not valid, as it is about my own engagement towards an entertainment product.

I don’t care a rat’s ass if Michkov is the next Gretzky if I don’t get to watch him play, what a weird proposal. He can go to whatever team, and we get to enjoy 4 years of Leonard, Smith, Benson whoever as of 2024 max.

sorry if triggered, but you’re mixing so many social and economic concepts in your post... Fan engagement does not exist around a player that they don’t see play. Your argument does not even make sense.

Make a point on how he is best available and stop there I’d say.

Honestly as a franchise that has been going nowhere since 30 years I don’t see the big deal about trying to hit a Homerun with Michkov.

Will Benson and Leonard be good ? Probably.
Will they be elite ? maybe
Will they be generational ? Absolutely not

Will Michkov be good ? Probably
Will Michkov be elite ? Possibly
Will he be generational ? Maybe

I mean no one in the draft except Bedard has more raw skills than Michkov, it’s a fact.

Could I Live with the habs picking Leonard ? Yes but again we would be taking the safe route when we have been stuck in the mud for 30 freaking years.

So tell me how long before you get to see Leonard, Smith, Benson or whoever in Montreal to entertain you? It's atleast two years minimal you'd have to think, more likely 3 or 4 before they are of anything of significant contributors, so what exactly are you missing out on?

And I don't know where you're getting 5 years for Michkov, it is of my belief he'll be in here in 3 years max. I see no reason why he'd extend for 2 more years in the KHL.

They may have been manufactured for and by HuGo in a 5D Chess kind of way.

Maybe they really want Michkov and they prefer that the teams with earlier picks, pass.

Or maybe, they want to maximize the return for their 5th with a team like the Caps.

The fears whether real or imagined create a climate of confusion which helps GMs keep their cards close to the vest. I’m hoping this is Hughes’ game plan as the man can spin yarn with the best of ‘em.

I have infinite more fun actually watching (lol) rookies make their way up the line up than reading about some guy in 5 years - again even if he’s Gretzky; to each his own.

50a will be in the nhl next year or 2024.
