Eh, I know it was a different circumstance geopolitically, but the "experts" let Tarasenko fall to 16th, Kuznetsov fall to 26, Kucherov to 58, Kaprizov to 135.

I wouldn't trust these scouts to identify translatable Russian talent if it had been staring them in the face for years.
They knew Tarasenko and Kuznetsov were very talented. They dropped due to the KHL risk at the time.

And lots of scouts were proclaiming Nikita Guscv, another SKA undersized winger who put up historic numbers in the KHL as a sure-fire can't miss superstar. Truth is it isn't easy to tell if these guys can translate KHL production to NHL production.
There’s been a lot of f***ups in the top-10 with Russian players. It’s a pendulum that swings and some years teams ridiculously take everything Russians. Some years in the early 2000s where a joke. For example in 2001 with Svitov and Chistov. Some years teams go bonkers for all Fins or Swedes and end up with egg in the face. But once in a while, aka now, there’s a Russian that pops up that should get that second look.

Any talk about trading down if Habs don't take Michkov is the best indicator that they wouldn't be taking the BPA and would lower the pick to grab whatever is left of the next tier of players. More of the same mantra of more quantity than quality.

Why not just take the BPA who is head and shoulders better and way more skilled than than anyone in the next tier? Just makes no sense to me for a franchise desperate for elite level skill.

might be a reason why craig button has michkov at 4 and leonard at 12...

If we pass on Michkov a superstar potential player for a REACH I will lose it. Just draft BPA and stop with this Reinbacher and Leonard nonsense. Just take one of the top 5 and move on.

Button is a clown. Most lists have Leonard and reinbacher top 7/8. You can't take anything he says seriously. Look who listed top 10. It's absurd.

word at the combine is that Reinbacher won't be available after 6

I fully expect Arizona to take him.

And I'm expecting us to take Leonard unless we flip one of our young RD in another trade and then take Reinbacher.

Michkov is going to go closer to 10 than 3 despite being a top 3 talent. The risk associated with him is to high for many clubs to stomach.

I have no issues taking him at 5. I'm talking about the people here who are saying it is an unforgivable sin to pass on him if he's there at 5. If we take him at 5, I'll be happy and hopeful. If we pass on him and take someone else, I'll be happy and hopeful too, understanding that it isn't a simple situation. There's a lot to consider and a lot of information we don't have access to.

And frankly, people are unfairly shitting on a guy like Leonard, who we DO have access to watch, plenty of tape, who has been impressive and by all accounts will end up being a very solid and useful player.
I don’t think that Leonard being a solid and useful player is the issue. It’s passing on a potential game changer to pick a solid and useful guy.

A game changer is also more entertaining. Since only one team wins, I guess fans want to have fun while trying.

I don’t think HuGo will use the fun factor to help him choose though.

Craig's Button's list.

From Button:

Knowing he will not suit up in the NHL until at least the 2026-27 season due to his contract, questions have arisen over when or if Michkov will come to North America. Button is unconcerned, citing the Columbus Blue Jackets signing forward Dmitri Voronkov and the Washington Capitals inking 2022 first-round pick Ivan Miroshnichenko to entry-level contracts in May.

I see zero risk in Matvei Michkov,” said Button. “Russian players are coming to the NHL; we’re seeing that happen. All you got to do is wait three years and there’s a lot of teams that should be in no hurry to have a player coming to the lineup

Obviously that’s all we should need to know there is no risk of Michkov playing in the NHL in a few years.

Statiscally speaking

In 19 draft out of the last 20, a defenseman was picked top 5.

Only in 1 draft out of the last 20 was a defenseman picked, indeed, 6.

I think we may be surprised where Reinbacher goes and who may fell on draft day.

I am excited. Smith and Leonard excites me. The low probability but still possibility that one of Carlsson, Fantilli falls to us excites me.

Could see SJ taking Reinbacher at 4

Some teams get stars. Chi ends an era with Kane/Toews and then gets Bedard.

OV is on his last miles. Michkov drops and WSH picks him up.

I know some think the lottery is fixed. I don’t.

But… if Michkov drops to WSH… it makes a good story for people who believe Bettman fixes the lottery/draft!!

We can acknowledge Chicago situation.

They have been incredibly lucky.

Imagine doing what they did and not ending with Bedard. Its a whole other story.

Modern, top class organisation, will be able to bring in star talent without needing lottery luck and voluntary sucking.

All these people acting like it would be embarrassing, unforgivable, unconscionable to pass on Michkov... who are so convinced he will be a superstar... what are you basing this on? How many people here have seen him play last year? How many internet scouts have? How many NHL scouts even?
''the classic u are not a scout what do you think you know about prospects ''

Just the entire draft central , the vast majority of NHL scouts who said that Michkov would be mile away #1 if Bedard was not in this year.

The most useless argument , just look at last draft , no need to be paid 1m a year to scout kids to know that whos gonna suck or not.

You’re referring to the organization that couldn’t draft a single impact forward in over ten years. The same organization that committed 90m in cash payments to the worst roster in the league. Same organization that kept Bergevin employed for ten years. Same one that committed 25m to Claude Julien. Etc.

Drafting a the skilled player with an unfortunate contract situation isn’t such a risk!
*past management

But yes, they left us many a turd as a reminder.

My Top 5 right now:

1. Bedard
2. Michkov
3. Fantilli
4. Carlsson
5. Benson

Zach Benson gives me Joe Sakic vibes. People shitting on his size and skating. Being scared of size for someone as talented is almost always a mistake. And I find his skating to be great in terms of mobility/agility/edgework. It's a gamble alright, but I prefer that bet than gambling on Will Smith or taking a safe pick like Reinbacher.

Sakic prospect report: Concerns about size and skating.

Button just doesn't seem that high on Reinbacher for some reason but he at least moved him up 4 spots from 24th on his May 15th list to 20th on today's list. He previously listed Reinbacher's NHL comparable as Adam Larsson. His top 19 didn't change from his last list on May 15th until now.
