What if he buys out the last year of his deal and coming over in 2 years? Anyone can play the "What If" game.
That won't happen..

Well then we lost the gamble. I am willing to take that gamble.

That really is the only debate here. Do we gamble on Michkov coming over? That is the question HuGo is likely deciding as well.
And with Nick Bobrov in the staff, they have better intern then most of the teams.

So if we pass on him, there is probably a good reason that nobody here can't know

I agree. I generally subscribe to the trust the experts mantra as well. I would be so choked though, if we pass and he comes to say Washington in 2 years and takes the reins from OV.

Risk/reward needs to be calculated and I trust Hugo to do that.

Based on what little we know so far....I value the reward far greater than the risk at this point.

I mean if almost every team in the top 10 are ready to pass him even with how much talented he is and how many NHL are ready to do anything to find talent... It's concerning for sure

Most of the NHL executive, Agent, Scouts who where ask about him during the combine where scared because they didn't know what will happen with him

Of course you are…. you’re not responsible for significant lost revenue…. $ that are required to incubate & grow side businesses

I’m positive someone who actually owns the business and wants to grow the profit$ won’t think the same way

The funniest, it’s that those who are dramatic about Habs not taking Michkov and saying Leonard is only a 50 pts player are those who didn’t watch a single game of any prospect
might be a reason why craig button has michkov at 4 and leonard at 12...

If we pass on Michkov a superstar potential player for a REACH I will lose it. Just draft BPA and stop with this Reinbacher and Leonard nonsense. Just take one of the top 5 and move on.

Michkov is the only player who has been compared to Bedard in this draft, he is the only one that can have a similar career. Now we have a chance to get him at #5, potentially huge gift, but you guys rather take Ryan Leonard?? I'm just a little confused. We haven't had a player hit 100 pts in a season since Naslund in 85-86, Michkov has that potential, does Leonard have it??

Habs nation needs a player who will take them off their seats, a real superstar... here is our chance, let's not mess it up for the love of god.

Even if he never comes over, I will never blame this management for this pick, in fact i'll respect that they have balls to try and hit a homerun, which is what this fan base desperately needs.

Yeah, in this one I'll just have to go with the scouts. Just because you don't think they're exciting, doesn't mean they aren't.

Or have you put in the work that a scout puts in and have the training and experience of a professional scout? I certainly don't.

For example the Sens scouts were really excited about a guy they picked 15, Erik Karlsson, even though many weren't too excited about him.

We've gotten Guhle, Caufield, and McDonagh outside the top 10. Sergachev at 9. Michkov is my guy. But there will be plenty of good players available at 5. There's more than Michkov in this draft - especially this draft class.
Trained and experienced professional scouts were also excited about Jankowski and said he'd be the best player from the draft in 10 years.

Yeah it's easy to say take the gamble when it's not actually your job/money on the line.

That said, there's a strong argument that a team that wants to be a contender will have to gamble and win those gambles from time to time. It certainly seems like this is one of those times where we should take the gamble.

You’re referring to the organization that couldn’t draft a single impact forward in over ten years. The same organization that committed 90m in cash payments to the worst roster in the league. Same organization that kept Bergevin employed for ten years. Same one that committed 25m to Claude Julien. Etc.

Drafting a the skilled player with an unfortunate contract situation isn’t such a risk!

Eh, I know it was a different circumstance geopolitically, but the "experts" let Tarasenko fall to 16th, Kuznetsov fall to 26, Kucherov to 58, Kaprizov to 135.

I wouldn't trust these scouts to identify translatable Russian talent if it had been staring them in the face for years.

Nobody is saying Michkov isn't talented. But the dramatics here over the possibility that he may not be our pick is outrageous. People are ready to trade Caufield plus our pick just to move up to top 3 so we're assured to get him. It's so over the top for a player that I guarantee nobody has seen play. Maybe some highlight videos, but that's it. You read a few articles that compare this guy to Gretzky and people buy that like it's gospel.

The unfortunate draft contract situation isn’t even that unfortunate. The more average the player, the longer it is to cross over. Superstars end up coming quickly. Even with additional hurdles. Teams like Caps, Wings and Habs have the wherewithal to facilitate difficult situations. He’ll come sooner than later, and it’ll hit that much harder when it happens… I’ll be all: “we still got a good player in Reinbacher… it’s in 7 years at 25 that Ds hit their potential…”. It won’t dissipate the air of uneasiness around the whole affair.

Most are saying to grab him at 5.

It’s the perfect stop to take the risk to bring in a potential game changer, if he is still there.

Referring to Craig Buttons list is like referring to anyone here's list. It's like arguing Seider was a reach because he had him at 26.
Button has a tendency to overrate guys based on international play, ESPECIALLY international play before their draft year. He puts big stock in the Hlinka.

What results is interesting, as he rates a lot of guys higher than they actually go and ends up right sometimes, and then rates a lot of guys lower than they actually go and ends up right sometimes. Most of the time it's wrong, but it produces some hits he can point to and say he got right when no one else did.

It's like picking every upset in March Madness. Sure you picked all the upsets, but you also finished last.

And lots of scouts were proclaiming Nikita Gusev, another SKA undersized winger who put up historic numbers in the KHL as a sure-fire can't miss superstar. Truth is it isn't easy to tell if these guys can translate KHL production to NHL production.

Gusev was never in the same category of Michkov though...

I always find Gusev overrated, Michkov is as good as any players we saw from Russia in that century

I have no issues taking him at 5. I'm talking about the people here who are saying it is an unforgivable sin to pass on him if he's there at 5. If we take him at 5, I'll be happy and hopeful. If we pass on him and take someone else, I'll be happy and hopeful too, understanding that it isn't a simple situation. There's a lot to consider and a lot of information we don't have access to.

And frankly, people are unfairly shitting on a guy like Leonard, who we DO have access to watch, plenty of tape, who has been impressive and by all accounts will end up being a very solid and useful player.

I was able to find one full game from January 2023 on Youtube.

It's fine to rely on highlight videos and scouting reports. I do that too. But when everyone starts getting overly dramatic over a player they have likely never even seen play since 2021 I think you need to take a step back and re-center yourself.

No arguments here. We can't go a single page on any of the threads without a Michkov or bust post. I would love Michkov too, but reality seems to be he's a likely faller. Teams don't have Russian scouts, he signed a multi year deal knowing he was projected very high, there are geopolitical factors, they haven't seen in best on bests and on and on.

Yeah Gooseegg did well his first year, but I think he just couldn't make decisions quickly enough at the NHL level to make up for his lack of physical tools.

That's where I have a lot more faith in Michkov, since he is brilliant at making quick decisions in tight space, and also has some tools (hands, quick accurate release) that Gooseegg never did.
