Sorry I had missed this one - 5 for sure I‘m not hyped for. If I knew it was 2 different story. The question today is: « the Mitch in 3-5 vs Leonard in 1-2? ». It’s like sex with the misses for the next 3 years waiting for a night with Scarlet J…

(edit - it’s been pretty « sexless » as a hab fan lately I guess anyway lol)
and the thing is, offensive wingers are regularly available in the free agent market and the trade deadline market. Look what Nino Niedereiter and Max Domi went for at this year's trade deadline. Then there were Vrana and Tolvanen.

We could always sign or trade for a top 6 winger while we wait for Michkov.

I bought HockeyProspect's Black Book. It's a great guide with lots of quotes from NHL scouts, etc. I won't publish quotes verbatim because people should support this business in my opinion, but I thought there were lots of interesting tidbits in the quotes related to Montreal.

On Michkov, the quotes suggested a better comparible is Caufield instead of a Kaprizov or Kucherov. Suggested some areas of his game have stagnated, and his playmaking is just ok (which is typical of guys relied on for goals). One scout said no way Montreal takes him at 5.

On Smith, the quotes said he's extremely talented but the downsides worry a lot of scounts. High bust potential. More a player that gets you to a playoffs instead of through the playoffs.

On Reinbacher, a scout suggested that he will be picked at 5 by Montreal, and that its being driven by people other than Hughes. Lots of the quotes said they don't see him being a top-10 talent, don't think the Seider comparisons apply and question if there really is offensive upside there.

Anyway, buy the book, I've gone through and thought it was a high quality publication.

Ugh yeah, who would want a better version of the best offensive player we've had in decades?

More scouts coming out saying Michkov stagnated in some areas. Scouts tend to not like that when doing their rankings, preferring kids who improved all over in their draft year.

*audible groan*

According to Mathias Brunet he said he would be very surprised if it was Leonard. Said he think it’s gonna be Smith or Reinbacher.

Last year he kinda had infos about Slaf i think. Maybe he’s just guessing.

I think Smith will be gone top 4 so I guess that leaves Reinbacher. After reading in the post above what some of the scouts had to say about him in the Hockey Prospect's Black Book thinking he's not a top 10 talent and questioning his offensive upside I'm even more concerned about taking him @ 5 and I didn't want to take him there to begin with.

The Habs just can't afford to **** up this pick and really need to get this right big time. I'm not having a good feeling about this.

Yeah, next year’s draft is full of defenseman in the top 10, potentially better than Reinbacher. So i don’t really know what they’re thinking…

Let’s hope Mathias is wrong about Leonard lol.

Many here seem convinced that Leonard is the Habs guy at 5th but this Habs regime seems to like raw players and I don't see anything raw with Leonard. What you see is what you get. His body is already developed, he's one of the better pure scorers in the draft, plays a mature game etc.

We might all be completely surprised with whoever the Habs pick. No way Hughes will tip his hand as he wants to enter the draft with every bit of leverage possible. A lot of the stuff writers are hearing could be smoke screens. We didn't know who the Habs were going to take at #1 last year until minutes before the draft. There's no way he's going to want anyone to know what he's thinking when he has the #5 pick.

Christ if that's true. Last year was the year to draft a big RHD and we got Slaf, now we have a franchise winger who will probably fall to us and we'll get a worse version of two guys we could have picked instead last year

HP's black book is always a great guide. Extremely thorough and the NHL scout quotes are worth the price itself. I'm reading it right now.

Don't think he had info. He just prefered Slaf to Wright. I remember listening to a broadcast a few weeks before the draft. It was simply his opinion.

I remember him saying he would be surprised if Wright was the habs choice

Imagine if with the 5th overall you pick Reinbacher , as this rate just give the pick to Arizona , they know how to draft atleast.
Agree they know how to draft

They want Reinbacher by the way

I remember it too and he didn’t said the Habs like Slaf

He receive a lot of heat for that during that time

I mean...

Reinbacher is not a sexy pick but he _could_ be one of the best players of this draft...

That could be said about 30+ other players though....

Having a good Dman who can log a ton of minutes is super valuable though, i.e someone like Sergachev

Having a top pair Dmen is extremely valuable

Look what happen to Tampa when they lost Hedman. Look at every team that won a cup, they all have a solid top 4.
