Not necessarily. A “no comment” is different from a “I/my client participated in the investigation and was cleared of wrongdoing” than a “I wasn’t there and didn’t see it”. Those are the three general kinds of statements we’ve seen so far, but only of them is a plain denial.
100% this.
Through a legal lens, the differences in these statements are absolutely staggering.

Someone needs to make a new list. With different colors of highlighter depending on the quality of denial.

Wait. I have read on this thread and elsewhere that no one would release a statement unless it was the truth.

Isn't he one of three players born in 1999, and it was rumoured that two were involved? And the other was Thomas?

So has every player (or lawyers) other than Formenton/Batherson said they weren't involved? Seems like everyone is just going to say they weren't there.
Many have released statements that didn't deny their involvement.

The doghouse
Can someone explain to me what the point is of saying “as far as I know no one has accused me of such” in some of these statements?

Seems like a weird thing to add.

Because there are 8 accused people. They are saying they aren’t part of that group, and as far as they know, no one has accused them of anything regarding this

When every player on the roster has issued a statement of denial, what are the internet detectives going to have left? A roster with every name crossed out.
It's been explain time and time again in this thread but you seem to miss the point on purpose.

The rapists already have legal representation, and through them, have officially acknowledged they were in the room with the girl. Their lawyers' angle of attack is that the victim is lying and the sexual encounter with the seven guys who snuck uninvited in the room while she was isolated was consensual.

They can't on one hand acknowledge they were there, and pretend on the other hand on social media that they weren't there.

Just in case this explanation above wasn't clear enough: nobdoy's gonna lie about their presence or involvement on social media, like the ridiculous scenarios you have outlined in other posts. They can't. It would destroy their own legal defense.

Got it? One more time just to be sure:

Nobody that was in the room is going to pretend they weren't involved. They will never, ever lie about their presence in the room.

They just won't.

In the next few days, it is likely that all the players who were not in that room are going to make sure it is crystal clear they were not there. It's in their interest to clear their names. The others can't do that because they have already admitted they were there.

Nobody's being a sleuth. Nobody's got a pitchfork, nobody's torturing anyone to get info. We're reading the statements that these players are publishing of their own free will, and slowly finding out who is making it perfectly clear they were in the room and who isn't.

A f***ing child could figure this out.

It's reinforcing that no accusations have been made toward any of the individuals.

If a child could figure this out, why don't you enlighten us. What denial statements are legit, and which are not? I have read post after post eliminating certain players from guilt because they had issued a statement. I have read posters saying that the players that hadn't issued statements yet must be guilty. Yet you are saying the "rapists" (accused) already have admitted they were in the room. I must be a child, because it doesn't seem that cut and dried to me.

Also, lets not absolve the parents of these young men; the sense of entitlement, special treatment, arrogance and absence of empathy isn't suddenly put on like a jersey once their gifts and talents bring them into the upper echelons of the Hockey Canada apparatus.
These kids stop living with their parents when they're 16 and go move off to some city away from home and basically spend all their time around their 17-20 year old teammates and fully absorbed in the "hockey player" where they get treated like a big deal because they're good at a game.

Junior Hockey a messed up kind of system to be honest, all to produce like 30-40 NHL players per year.

There’s a much easier way for an innocent person to deal with that. All he did was raise suspicions even more.

Once again, you are not a part of the investigation, you are not receiving counsel, you have no idea what is happening behind the scenes. What makes one player wait 48+ hours after others have released a statement? Each day there's more and more players releasing different variations of statements . Almost as if they have to wait to do something before releasing a statement. This whole concept of assuming guilt based on lack of a statement is so mind-numbing. Adding the layer of social media actions, is f***ing stupid.

Inherently, it becomes more and more transparent after each successive post, which people believe, at their inner most core, that the real tragedy here is that some good ol' hockey playing boys might have their comfortable lives disrupted.

So many of those calling for "wait for the facts!" seem less interested in the "facts" as designing ever changing ("maybe she just wanted money!", "maybe there was consent and then she regretted it the next day!" etc.) narratives as to why these hockey guys maybe could have done nothing wrong.

The red flag is when they don't deny they were present when the alleged events occurred.

A claim that someone didn't participate is pretty meaningless because even the guys who were implicated are going to be doing that.

I don't know whether we're supposed to be parsing the various statements in this thread. But I'll say the statement one of the players released today is a good example of the distinction I'm making.

Kinda creepy how 'involved' some of you are getting here imo. I mean I can understand wanting to stand up for what's right and looking for a better world/future but some of the posters here are bordering on total obsession for an incident they have no real world ties to.

And if I'd have to guess --the actual wellbeing-- of the victim is a complete afterthought for many here. The illusion of power and control is an intoxicating feeling for one's sense of self. Can open some real dark doors if you're not careful.

Check yo'self before u rek yo'self homie

No statement at all is suspect. The collective silence and hoping this goes away is done-zo now. There is a 0 % chance you would just be unaware about it by now. If you weren't in the room you want everyone to know about it at this point. Most likely they are speaking hourly with their lawyers right now with the primary aim of avoiding jail time.

Goalposts have moved for some. The red flag used to be that no statement had been issued.

The whole of society needs a culture change you mean. The common denominator is basically always ''people who have a huge monetary or political value get to bend the law to their will''.

We see it in the higher echelons of every sphere of society and it's sick.

Definitely.

The whole power & money dynamic in society is sick. Though to be honest, that is never going to change. We might have better luck in the sporting world not treating 10-year-olds like mini gods for being good at sportsball.

Or - for some people - this is a big deal. If you don't care that's fine, move along.

I love this sport - I hate the culture surrounding it. This is a story that hits too close to home for some. No real world ties? You could make the same comparison to a whole hoist of issues.

I will try again:
The statements that say they were not involved in the incident are legit, they mean they had nothing to do with it.

The statements that say they were cleared of wrongdoing likely means they participated but are saying it was consensual and the victim is lying.

It’s that simple.

Edit: read Dube, Katchouk and Hart and co. in here and tell me you still don’t see it:
