Social media is not real life. Anyone with 2 functioning brain cells should never engage with the lunatics on there. Especially twitter.
That’s like saying your neighborhood is not real life.

Players engage in social media and real people engage with them on there. Does it represent the sentiment of people as a whole? No, but the person calling you a rapist on the street is just as real as the one calling you one on twitter.

Right it’s only hockey this happens

Terminally lazy argument.

Systemic misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia et al are, of course, institutional. Of course they exist in all levels of our society, no one denies this or suggests this.

But it doesn't mean the challenges within sports aren't specific and shouldn't be addressed in a specific manner.

Take what happened in London. The booze was free flowing, there were kids under age partaking, in full view of HC staff who didn't care. Because those kids were the stars, they got free rein of the place, just like they, despite being teenagers, had more influence to lean on the woman in question, on media, etc. They're on pedestals as teens

THAT is a systemic problem specific to sports that put them a position of power and influence over others.

Is there systemic sexism et al in business? Sure. But the HS intern isn't allowed to saddle up to the bar at the Christmas Party or made into a hero.

No it's not like saying your neighbourhood is not real at all. That's an absurd statement to make. You really need to get out more if you actually think that. Social media cultivates and attracts the craziest of people, with very little restriction on their behaviour and impulses. It's not reflective of real life at all. If anyone had any sense, they'd stay clear of engaging with it.

I will say again that this is enormously stupid, and never do it if you are accused of a crime. I also cannot fathom how or why actual adult human lawyers would believe spreading those texts around to the media is in any way helpful to their client(s). Great job, idiots, you've just established at least a couple of the elements of 423.1.

I noted it earlier in the thread, but I feel like the tactic is to intimidate the victim into dropping the case. Considering victim was relatively reluctant to talk publicly as it was, I think idea was to show how nasty a trial would be and get her to back down.

Makes sense if you consider there is evidence that would prove client guilty. You lose in public court of opinion but maybe kill an official charge.

But its scummy, and yeah... man it makes the players look bad.

Well obviously there are crazy people but there’s no way you can possibly believe social media has no influence on public perception of someone. Even if it’s small, why the hell would any innocent person be ok with the narrative of being a rapist circulating on there?

Why did Connor Timmins wait till yesterday why did Robert Thomas wait till today? This isn't a new story and has been developing since the end of May, with players attempting to clear their names at different times.

I don’t know but the player deduction game has certainly picked up the last 36 hours and maybe Thomas saw his name thrown out there a lot more frequently. I think the next 24 hours could be teling.

No question the heat has been turned up in the last few days though - just look at the number of replies to this thread today for example.

I assume more statements coming in the next couple of days.

This argument is so f***ing lazy.

Let’s take a house fire for example.

There’s a house fire happening in your house. Do you put it out? Or do you say that because there’s fires everywhere, it doesn’t matter?
Before I answer, I have some questions.

Was the fire suspicious in nature?

Do I have insurance, yet may not want them to investigate the claim?

Do I have a partially publicly funded account of some type in case I do not want to make an insurance claim, and just want to replace the house like nothing ever happened?

And, who needs to know this fire even happened, is there a way to keep it out of public view?

I agree which is why it is needless and reckless to speculate.

Unfortunately it does, especially for people that spend their entire time on there, but it's far more exaggerated than people make it out to be, and it's not reflective on reality in general. The more you engage with the crazies online, the more crazy crap you'll get thrown back at you. As a general rule, it's best to stay clear.

are people actually suggestioning to have no team canada at world juinors in august/december because of this? smh so stupid.. what happened here is wrong and the 8 players should face court cases/jail time and hockey canada should be paying a big fine plus leadership cleared house but punishing the next generation of players is not the way to go.
Yes. Absolutely. It's quite clear HC implicitly condones this kind of behaviour - they had a secret slush fund of pay-off money for exactly this purpose. Instead of y'know...like actively not encouraging sexual assault, they decided paying people off when it happens was the best route.

1 year IIHF ban for HC, massive fine, and every current HC exec should be canned and blacklisted for life.

The IIHF had no problem banning other nations (Russa, Belarus) for political reasons. Should Canada be treated differently?

Canada should be severely punished for this. Actions or inaction have consequences.

I would expect the USA to be severely punished if there was a scandal like this.

Someone was keeping track on Twitter. There are I believe 14 left that have not said anything about this or released any statements.
Ken Campbell's report combined with Thomas' statement today, further ruled out several more today.

Klague & Point are now cleared, as they were both US college players. Down to 11 now, I think.

With every passing day, and every passing report, the heat closes in on John Doe's 1 through 8.

It'll never happen, Canada is too much of a cash cow for the WJC and other tournaments, but stripping things of emotion and finances, then I'd say Hockey Canada's failures rise to such a systemic, institutional, level that tournament bans would certainly be warranted. The better comparison is probably UOttawa tearing down their hockey program years ago after a similar situation. (I will add that specific to the Russian ban isn't JUST a commentary on geopolitics, but on how intertwined the sports programs in Russia are with the governing structure and Putin himself. It'd be for this reason you wouldn't kick out CAN/USA/FIN/SWE etc. if their government had done something egregious).

Definitely an intimidation tactic especially when having the female attorneys release them.

It is disgusting but effective especially with those who don't think what happened was a big deal.

Get ready for more victim blaming once the identities of the players gets confirmed.

Throw the book at these players and at the entire governing body.

One month after USA Hockey learned of the charges, Boucher played for the U.S. at the 2011 IIHF U-18 Championships.

By all accounts, USA Hockey acted quickly to remove the player from the home but it wan't until years later that the victim came forward. While disturbing, it isn't comparable to this.

I'm also not interested in playing USA vs. Canada or in any whatboutisms.

After the USA Gymnastics scandal, nothing would shock me when it comes to sports in the US.

Wait, you can be convicted of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old in the US and not go to jail or have to register as a sex offender? That is terrible.
