All the focus is on Hayton and not the embarrassing loss. Slick move.

Interesting take. I would actually somewhat respect the move as a strategic decision even if it was a dumb strategic decision if that were the case. Captain takes the heat for being an immature idiot, media forgets about the bad loss, team regroups. Dumb, but more plausible than him forgetting.

Would be really interesting to find out what he has to say about today's game. Too bad the old Grapes is gone.

He would have spent a ton of time complaining about the refs.

It is how most Canadians justify our cheating in 1972. We had no business winning that series.

there's no need to editorialize. this was mimicry of anthem protests that children of his generation have grown up either interpreting as brave or highly disrespectful depending upon their leanings. for him to apply this tactic at this specific time is no coincidence. again, how much more assistance do you need?

It's a huge stretch to compare him keeping his helmet on with Colin Kaepernick or Tommie Smith.

Like a massive one.

If he comes out and explains that he deliberately kept his helmet on in protest with respect to Russian conduct during the game, I will gladly admit that I am wrong.

People who protest anthems give a rationale.

I suspect he was just angry and sulking and already regrets doing it. Not following in the footsteps of great anthem protests of the past.

What a loser. Total embarrassment to his country and himself. I guess a lot of Canadian kids really aren’t learning anything from hockey anymore. You lose, you take off your helmet.

He's not a kid, he's an adult acting like a kid
Nonsense. He’s a kid.
We’ve all done dumb things at his age. Well at least I have. He made a mistake and he will learn. Not what you expect from the captain but he’s still just a kid.
Canada always needs to find someone to crucify for these debacle type games. Looks like this time it’s him.

I don't think so.

The reffing was fine in this game.

In 1972, the Canadians were not prepared for the different standard.
Off topic but:
In 1972 it wasn’t just a different standard it was often blatantly biased reffing by the Eastern bloc refs: Badder and Kamper. Or as the Canadians affectionately called them: Badder and Worse!

Well, at the time it probably seemed biased. I'd have to watch the games again.

I've read the book "The Days Canada Stood Still" by Scott Morrison so I'm familiar with some of it.

Sometimes it's hard to separate the propaganda from the truth though - that was a very politically charged event.
