Looking at the NHL draft, the WJC and the performance of Canada's young players in the NHL it is clear that Canada should be doing a fair deal better than it is. A lot of that has been masked because Canada remained dominant at the best on best level due to the previous generation....there is no reason that Canada shouldn't be trying to its position. There is still a lot of potential for growth in Canada.
I agree. I'm not sure if we have just hit a lull after the amazing players we produced from 2004 to 2009, but we have been trending down for a long time and we need to start doing better.

Frost was one of the few guys that was noticeably good offensively, I'd rank him as their best forward.
Suzuki has some skill but man he didn't do anything with it.
Hayton was a play killer. He'd get the puck, hold on to it and try to stickhandle through the defender only to lose the puck, rinse repeat.

Losing to Russia is one thing. Flopping 7 year ago is a long way back to look.

We seem to <bleep> the bed on a regular basis.
I still just think it is a sign of how much better the competition has become, not that I am saying Hockey Canada is blameless.

Again, I don't see the U.S., a team that is most like us, losing to lesser teams. It doesn't happen. To us, it happens a lot.

Not sure if it is the pressure or teams get "up" for us or it's because the U.S.'s players have more chemistry because they have been Hot Housed. Something is giving them the edge.

Exactly, grinding dinosaurs like Hunter tend to have a soft spot for players who remind them of themselves when they were playing and they often favor such players over highly skilled ones. It usually sets the table for handicaping, laughable coaching decisions.
Was this comment really over a single decision to give Canada's most effective forward and team captain the PS? This is ludicrous. First, Comtois isn't a grinder. This stigma against big forwards who play a little physical is ridiculous. Penalty shot rates are generally around 30% anyways so the likelihood that any given player on a given penalty shot would make that shot anyways is not high. And in what, a 60+ minute game with dozens of chances and hundreds of possessions going to each team this is what you're going to get upset about? What aspect of this team is a "grinder" team? Go down the roster, who is actually a "grinder"? Comtois, really? Is JAD a grinder or Lafreniere? It was a crazy game, it was a tough loss, this is trying to make something out of nothing.

Choosing Comtois over guys like Frost and Glass was an embarassing decision. So was benching Frost for the entire OT.

Finland was lucky to win... but 2 goals in 2 games isn't getting it done
this is sooooo true.....the 2 events that lead to the GWG, 1 the penalty shot-i think if is a best of 10 it probably ends there the majority of the time. then 2 the stick break- again 9-10(maybe more) the game ends there....HOWEVER scoring 2 goals in 2 games is a KILLER, PLAIN AND SIMPLE

and thats not even getting into the goal to tie it

You're relying on the counterfactual that they would have made the hypothetical shot or even had a higher chance of making it based on what? Because you think they usually do a few more stick dangles in game? Maybe one of them would have made it in a counterfactual scenario. Maybe if Bouchard takes it himself he would have made it. It's not a ridiculous decision because there's absolutely no clear and indisputable metric by which to say one player would have been more adept, much less adequate, to take the penalty shot. It's a penalty shot. Less than 1 in 3 go in. The fact that the outcome that happens 70% of the time took place under with one forward in no way implies or suggests another forward would have done better.

Sure, and what does benching Frost have to do with liking grinding dinosaurs? Look at Hunter go, choosing grinders like Hayton, Anderson-Dolan, Tippett, Suzuki, over Frost. Maybe they're not as competent as skill players as Frost, but which of them are grinders?

Comtois wasn't a grinder in the NHL, yet somehow people think he's one on this stage. Its hilarious.

I never called any of those players grinding dinosaurs though, that would be Tim Hunter. I still think he's a bad coach who took equally bad decisions. You disagree, fine. Get over it.

No, what you said verbatim was

Could he have coached a better game? Maybe. Maybe some of his calls were wrong, I'm fine with that. But that's not what you're saying. What you're saying is that he chose players like him, ergo players who resemble grinders, over skill players, implying both that these players at least appear to be grinders and that they are not highly skilled players. You can say the coach made some poor decisions without saying the kids aren't highly skilled or resemble grinders.

Hopefully you don't count Finland, a program that is two games away from winning gold for the third time in six years, as a "lesser team."
