The draft issue is a bit deceiving. We are falling off because the Americans are really stepping up their hockey.

Their population dictates they will have more elite players and now those elite players are actually playing hockey.

Matthews comes from Arizona. 10-15 years ago that was unheard of to have high end players coming from anywhere south of Illinois.

I do agree with your point that this team was awful though. Just a poorly picked team and it showed
Nothing to do with the Americans. We can still have high end talent - no matter how good the U.S. is - Auston Matthews has zero affect on how well a kid plays in the CHL.

Simply, we have hit a lull. A valley. I have seen it before - late 90's / early 2000's. Last time we had a summit.

Not sure if/when we will come out of it.

Canada needs a full time National Team with a Full Time National Coach. Throwing a team together at the last minute just won't cut it anymore.

There is NO reason we can't learn from other countries - they have been taking pages from our playbook for years.

Not me. I'm done. I won't be watching in the future.

My loss?

Maybe. But life's too short to watch a team like this.
Huh, that's taking it pretty seriously. Sure it's fun when your team wins, but it is possible to enjoy the sport even when they don't. I'm guessing the difference between dejection and elation was as slim as Canada holding that lead for 40 more seconds, and winning an even matchup vs Russia or USA (not to look past Switzerland, but...)

This wasn't the best Team Canada, no doubt, but it's worth keeping some perspective.

Canada doesn't need a full time national team, there are more than enough top players available to allow Canada to skip hot housing. The focus should be on improving development and more importantly getting more people actually playing hockey. That has nothing to do with the results of this tournament though, as it should be obvious looking at trends over this decade.

I don't think there should be a team removed completely from the CHL players pool like the US u18 but I would LOVE a full time coach. The assistants can be junior coaches but get me someone who doesn't have their own team to worry about and doesnt have biases

Canada's won gold 17 times since 1982, so close to half the time. They have two in the last five years. Your despondent reaction is a bit over the top.

I'm just amazed how out played we were.

If we had outplayed them and we lost, fine. But as I have said before, how hard is it to clear the zone? Why pass on a 4 on 1?

The Canadian Hockey IQ (and talent) has headed south in the last decade and I would rather remember the "Good Old Days".

Will I change my mind after I cool down? Maybe. But hopefully I won't.

We've got some really high end young prospects in the coming years after this one. If they reach their potential it could be a real short lull. Especially when you have players like Marner/Point/Barzal, Rielly, Chabot exploding.

One thing that needs to be addressed...

The lack of composure on Canadian Teams.

In the old days, it was the other teams that F-Up. They did something stupid in the final minutes to lose to us. Now it's us that can't hit the net on a 4 on 1.

Let me ask you...

When is the last time the U.S. team lost to a lesser opponent in this tournament?

When is the last time they lost a playoff game they should have won?

Look at tonight. They were up 2 against the Czechs. Instead of folding when the Czechs scored, the kept their composure and regained the 2 goal lead.

Canada has taken a step back and they need to fix... something.

I hope you're right.

HOLD UP

I just read on twitter that Hunter could have chosen anyone for that penalty shot? Even guys on the bench

is that true? and he chose comtois.

It was a frustrating game today. First, give the other team some credit. Also realize that every country has experienced frustrating outcomes and weak performances. Look at the Swedes who dominate the preliminary round every year and then choke.

Maybe you just aren't much of a hockey fan, in which case yeah, give up on it if you can't take seeing them lose or be frustrating. Even a lot of our gold medal teams have struggled along the way and narrowly avoided failure. If this one had held on for 40 more seconds maybe they'd have come through with gold and be remembered as heroes, it is that capricious. Only very rarely one team dominates the tournament from start to finish.

Just didn't have a very good team this year. The forwards lacked game breakers and the defense under performed.

Hockey Canada needs to make some changes on how it develops it's top talent.

I am a huge hockey fan. I'm just trying to say that something needs fixing. I'm not sure what - again, I would be all for Hot Housing our best players.

Maybe there is too much pressure on Canadian kids? I don't know. I do know we are trending in the wrong direction.

It not about the player talent, it's about having a system, coaching and bringing the team together. In Finland and Sweden, juniors from early age typically play under a similar system and often even the same coach is together with the same bunch of guys over three or four years. For example the current coach of team Finland, Jussi Ahokas, was coaching the U18 team that won in 2016 before he moved to U20 in 2017/2018.

What Canada should or shouldn't do has nothing to do with the results of this tournament.

Maybe not from this tournament alone, but looking at the trend from the last ten years, Canada has only won two gold medals, which is a remarkably lower rate of success than the years before that.

Maybe we needed the better goaltender...
?? WTF ? Our goaltender was awesome..

Hands down the worst Canadian team at the world juniors in 10 years. Coach had no vision and couldn't coach the team to a nose picking competition.

When it starts spilling into the Best On Best tournaments, Canadians will (hopefully) take notice.
