Would still at least play for a medal

I would rather get knocked out early than play for bronze. At least this way HC has the impetus to re-evaluate some of their decision making and to hopefully troubleshoot why they mustered up the worst result on home soil in history, with a team chalk full of high first rounders...

With Canada playing at home every other year

Yeah, better to play the games in arenas that are 10% full, that will keep the lights on for the IIHF and the federations....

I would love to hear someone’s grade on all the players this year. And when I say someone I mean someone that doesn’t have the chicken little “the sky is falling” scenario I’m hearing from most of you on here. We lost two close games. Guess what even an nhl team has weird things and bad puck luck where they lose a cpl close games. And just in case some of you haven’t realized/ or have forgotten this here’s a little secret I learnt from playing competitive hockey. The other team is trying to win too and they don’t give a rats ass if it’s Canada or Slovakia they are playing they want to win just as bad. Again I ask someone with some knowledge who had the chance to watch all the games I would love to hear your grades for the players

I think Leason played well and he really surprised me.

Overall, Canada didn't utilize their greatest advantage which is our depth as much as we should have. We typically are deeper than other countries. I think the Fins win gold so losing a tight OT game isn't the end of the world. Disappointing for sure but I think it's alright. The Fins had way better "star power" with Tolvanen, Heponiemi and Jokiharju. I think they will only get better as they adjust to NA ice.

Canada tried their best but they never really had the IT factor or the chemistry to win. The lack of offense is inexcusable and speaks for itself.

Loved our goalies they were not the issue most of the d was suspect especially bouchard and smith to me. Was not impressed with comtois' diving in those couple games but other than that was good. Did not like suzuki's game too selfish most of the time. Loved entwhistle's hustle and same with Leason had a lot of good looks and setup some nice plays. Frost was good hayton was good in the cycle. Lafreniere and veleno was never given a real opportunity to shine as i think they would've been good with the right linemates. Anderson-Dolan made a few nice hits but really just never found chemistry with anyone. Don't really understand the pp setup with studnicka he is a solid bottom 6 player in a tournament like this. I actually liked McIsaac's game besides that suspension would have loved to him play more. Tippett and glass were obviously good wish they had the puck on their sticks more. Next year will be better.

I disagree with some of what you said...

1) Look at our recent Drafts. The last decade hasn't been up to snuff.
2) This team was awful - I can't remember a team this piss poor.

I have said this before and I will say it, again, Canada needs to borrow a page from the U.S.'s playbook and put together a National Team.

You are on the right track
I have been harping about this for a while. But how is this done.
The Chl runs the program
How can we pull together our best from the program without ruining the club teams
I wish more folks can comment on that that ripping players thrown together for three weeks to make a competitive team in today’s hockey world

I think this is on the mark. There was no reason not to spread the ice time more evently, there was no clear "top 6" here. For example I thought Veleno looked good when he got the chance and maybe would have helped a lot of he could have got in the flow of the game, or even in the PP. Was better than Suzuki the last couple of games, I thought.

Well when you play this tourney on home soil 2 out of every 3 years it was bound to happen eventually.

Was there a reason for our pp setup to constantly have guys play on their onwing? Wouldn't it be more effective have offwing for one timers and offensive setups?

Stop running the CHL like a mini NHL junior pro league and more of what it should be. a developmental league. play less games, not a 72 or 68 game schedule and incorporate more breaks for international games that allows these players more practice time with tournament games.

and you can start with a whole bunch of Hockey Canada internal rules. like the silly graduation rule whereby a talented underage player (Lafreniere) can now no longer play U18 tournaments now that he's cracked a U20 team. I think this tournament proved that a player like Lafreniere could use all the practice and games with his peer group he can get his hockey gloves on.

I realize Lafreniere won't be available to play U18 in April due to CHL playoffs, but it's an example of internal asinine Hockey Canada rules.

Totally agree
Canada needs to either play to build an under 20/18/17 program or continue to be subject to these off years
CHL is to satisfy the NHL
The margin of error is razor thin with these Nation teams now and any familiarity to upscale tempo maybe the edge we need

I wonder too if a team that struggled to score and had a terrible power-play should have given more offensive guys a look. Leading OHL defensman scorer Ryan Merkley seems strange to not have invited to camp in hindsight with what this team struggled with.

If you mean me...

We've won twice in the last 10 years so, no, I won't give it a rest.

But coaching isn't the problem? Cause it's different players every year.

What did Hunter say he wanted going into the camp? Fastest team ever. How do guys skate? You know when we heard that kind of talk? 98-04. I'm by no means a fan of his, but Corey F'in Perry was the 13th forward in his last year of eligibility. The coaches were so enamored with speed, or this metric or that metric, that they forgot take hockey players, Hell, Crosby wasn't a shoo-in to make the team his first year, and he was only the best player in the entire CHL.

The Canadian power play was horrible this year. PP's run the way the coaches want them run. Morgan Frost was sure disappointing in OT last night wasn't he? Of course, it wasn't his call to stay on the bench the entire time. Canada may or may not have had the best roster at this tournament, but Tim Hunter worked very hard to get the least out of them as he possibly could, and succeeded.

What's next year's team look like? I know a few names of course and that team looks decent.

Do you know anything about Merkley? Great talent, but it would be a huge risk to bring a player like thate and exactly the sort of choice that would be justifiably ripped to shreds if he pulled one his infamous selfish plays and cost the team.

Yet given the result, that line of thinking seems to have been wrong.

Canada is always way too conservative with their selections

Huh? So we win with Merkley? Great logic. They didn't pick me either, maybe that was the problem? Shm, this is beyond stupid. They were 40 seconds from a very winnable semi-final. One fluky bounce and suddenly the issue is that the guy with the most well known character issues in the CHL wasn't on the team (and f*** Max Comtois - right?). One thing is for sure, our education system needs some work.

On paper Team Canada defense was great, the least of anyone's concerns going in.

(Edit: oh sorry, you are American? The point remains.)

Never seen such an offensively inept team Canada in my life. Feel bad for the goalie. He had some huge saves

I feel really bad for DiPietro, he seems like a great kid and he was playing extremely well. Funny, this team actually gets a rock solid goalie and they can't give him any run support whatsoever against Finland. Oh well. Onto next year.

A real bizarro-tournament in that respect.
