As expected Spurgeon turned down an invite. not surprised. I give up on that guy ever playing an international game. He'll be persona non grata from now on.

I think Hockey Canada extended an invite to Staal as well. Don't know why that guy would ever want to play in this tournament ever again...considering what happened last time.

good news about Chabot though...now if we land Makar that would fill my quota of young d-men.

I hope there are some significant adds once the 1st. rd. is done, as things are looking pretty bleak at the moment.

so far Canada is very thin. MY guess they will hold out hope for a few short series in the first round to grab a few players from those teams

If Team Canada has so much trouble recruiting players who have 20 goals or more this NHL season. There are some good players who have speed and some creativities that they can invite.

Paul Byron ( If he is healthy)
Daniel Sprong (if he wants to play for Canada)
Jake Virtanen

These guys score less than 20 goals but they will be more effective than grinder-type of players like Andrew Shaw.

Byron was offered and refused. I don't believe that Sprong ever attained Canadian citizenship, so he isn't eligible. Virtanen would be a surprise.

Can i ask where did you get the information that Paul Byron declined the invitation?

Regarding Dan Sprong, he applied for Cnd citizenship in 2015 or 2016. He should receive it by now. The site below shows that he has dual citizenship.

Hey bud,

TC does not have a lot of speedy and creative forwards with less 20 NHL goals this season. They may need to rely on NHL veterans with less than 20 goals like:

Jeff Carter
Corry Perry
Adam Henrique
R. Getzlaf
T. Toffoli
T. Zajac
T. Brouwer

Wait.... I just remember TC still 2 more players who scored less than 20 goals this NHL who are fast and somewhat creative, although they are not as creative as J. Gaudreau's level.

J. Drouin
D. Ciaggula

Kinda figured he would go,he loves to play for hs country...Hopefully he will get to see an gold medal
Yeah i know and agree with you. I am hoping they can assemble at least 6 D-men, 10 forwards, and one goalie. You know, TC always have trouble with line chemistry. Hence, it is better that they assemble the majority of the team and let them practise together longer.

It is even better if they can get a couple of linemates from each team, and just let them play on the same line. It is rare to see TC can put together lines with chemistry. It is just so boring to see them play that same old style of dump and chase, and/or cycle along the board.

If they have better chemistry, we get to see a little bit of the counter-offensive game, and/or creative offensive cycling game, and/or effortless transitional game. I am praying to the Hockey God!!

Drouin and Byron refused.
Byron is injured

How long until Hockey Canada starts asking guys playing in Europe?

I'd wait until all 1st.rd. series are done before exploring that option.

obviously we are going to have to go way down the depth chart here. hopefully some 1st.timers to the WHC finally step up. The Ryan Johansen types of the world.

I'm hoping a few significant players from the Leafs (Tavares/Rielly) Preds (Ellis/Johansen) Jets (Scheifele/Morrissey) VGK (Stone/Theodore) and Avs (MacKinnon +others) will all be thrilled to play some extra games once their seasons wrap up here in about a week and a half.

Although, I doubt Morrissey is 100% healthy and will most likely decline an invite. I'm always skeptical of players who return from IR just in time to play PO games. That's more like healthy enough to play important games that matter. not healthy enough to risk further injury in end of season international tournament.

It seems like they must be waiting for the first round eliminations. The majority of the the players on non-playoff teams have declined invites for one reason or another, so...

I'm shocked there hasn't been any news at all on Bertuzzi, Mantha, Athanasiou. I'm assuming Canada reached out to all 3, but I haven't heard anything.

One of the Montreal reporters tweeted that Byron refused. Sprong did not have Canadian citizenship as of 2017, as he was ineligible for the WJC, and since then he has lived in USA. If he has citizenship then it hasn't been reported. That website listed Sprong with both flags before, when he definitely did not have Canadian citizenship, so I don't consider it noteworthy.

Who knows what Sprong's situation is really with regards to Canadian citizenship. It doesn't take much to retain Canadian residency while working in the U.S. and continue the process towards citizenship.

but nobody knows. and we'll probably won't know until he plays an international game. which may or may not ever happen.

but even if he had citizenship, not sure I like him on any Team Canada at the moment.

I'm not interested in him on the team, but I'm also going to assume that he isn't eligible until there is some credible evidence otherwise. Apparently he was trying to get citizenship when he was WJC eligible but there were issues that prevented it from happening.
