Extremely underwhelming add and a bit of a head scratcher, surely there are two forwards who would consider going from the second round. Last year they brought a full slate of 14F and 8D, so really hoping they have someone decent in mind for the last forward slot from round 2 and another upgrade on D.

How many players do they have now and how many more can they add ?

The have 23 players now, can add 2. I hope for at least one real difference maker to be added. The roster as it looks now seems to me well mixed, definitely not weak, but still I miss more really exceptional individuals - in fact I see only Tavares, maybe Stone and Couturier. The rest are great players, but not exactly the difference makers for the key moments in my opinion. I always hope for each team to bring a strong roster to the WCH, because I want to see a quality tournament.

Is US players taking this tourney more seriously than Canada?

I guess since they havent won it in 50 years or so.

I remember in the early 90s when USA sent beer league players lol

Cozy business deal you mean, Canada provides a half decent team to the WC in return for IIHF co-operation in other ways. At this point there really isn't any reason for an established player to go. Why would you? I wouldn't.

How about the fact that most of Canada's elite players came thru the Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20 programmes and the money made from winning or medalling at the IIHF World Championships goes back to supporting these non-money making programmes.

that's just silly. He was a 20 year old coming off his NHL rookie season and didn't have a significant role on the 2016 team that won gold. His career sort of floundered for a few years until this year with his move to Montreal.
If I were you I would ask my cable provider to refund me a portion of my fees. They piped in alternative games to you. Domi was one of the leaders on that junior team. Did you forget that the Montreal fans were calling his name? Oh that's right your cable company didn't show you real games. As for his stint in Arizona, he had an excellent rookie year and was on track for the same in his sophomore year until he was injured. His third year was a bad one, I agree.

I am pretty sure he was talking about him being a passenger on the 2016 World Championship team lol

LOL. what a silly laughable post that was. How on earth did you come to the assumption that the 2015 World Junior tournament was the one in question when neither I or the original post mentioned 2015. I even stated 2016 in my response. You even had visual cues to help you out, your player in question brandishing a medal with Taylor freaking Hall.
but you ignored those and instead went straight in to your assumptions and silly ridiculous rant. NHL tribalism at its best.
Try and do better next time. 2 minutes in the penalty box for you.

Barzal and Pulock would be nice adds.

I'd like Pulock as well. but we're maxed out with 4 RD already and none currently on the roster that I would like to piss off so much by sending him home and replacing him after he already accepted an invite. It wouldn't bother me if Hockey Canada said to Strome/Turris/McCann - screw you, MacKinnon and Barzal are on the way, so get lost.
but getting quality D-men for this tournament is always a bigger challenge than Fs. so, tough call. Towes Pulock 2nd. pairing would be nice. I suppose if they were going to do it, it would be the youngest NCAA player with the least amount of NHL experience that would be the odd man out. but I like Fabbro. he has Makar-lite type skills. we may need him at these future tournaments.

The good news is, at least the team (or at least some of them) will gather at a rink somewhere in Toronto for the first time today before heading off to Europe tomorrow or Saturday. A couple of practices 1 pre-tournament game and we're good to go.

It's my bad about 2016. I thought you were referring to the Junior team but you expect a 20-21 year old to lead a team of veterans? Also that doesn't erase your erroneous comments about his three years in Arizona. His rookie year he had a .64 ppg in his first year and the same ppg his second. The only bad year he had was his last year. You might want to take the penalty box yourself.

I didn't say anything about his rookie year or that I expected him to play a major significant role as a 20 year old playing in his 1st. WHC. I only suggested that as a young, and still developing player, he might want to still work on his development at every opportunity and come back again to play a BIGGER role now that he's a little older. and had a pretty decent year. And scoring 18 goals over the course of 2 seasons 141 games after a 18 goal rookie season is floundering for a few seasons. not sure why you would take issue with that. but whatever.

no penalty box for me. I win the Lady Byng of my Beer League every year.

Sometimes you just have to own up and take the loss.

The addition of McCann is surprising. Both because he's an extremely generic bottom six player, and also because I recall hearing things about a bad relationship between McCann and Hockey Canada stemming from reputed character issues. Given his level and that he was a late add, I assume that there is an upfront deal in place where McCann goes along but is aware that he may be bumped from a playing spot if Canada can get another forward.

not to mentions issues he had in Vancouver and Florida. This is such a bad selection, it makes the Strome selection look like a stroke of genius.

and as for him getting bumped for a better player, should one become available, Oh Lordy, I hope so.

I could see it happening. It may also be that he was late only because of an issue with Athanasiou. Looking at forwards who may be available after the first round and would be worthwhile additions and might actually accept, I only see Barzal and Dubois. Among defencemen... maybe Burns would go.

I'm hoping for Nate and Matt + a real D. and Hockey Canada will be forced to hurt a few feelings by sending a couple of these plugs the hell home out of it.

hope is hope. until there is none.

the americans will finally win the tournament since there team is stacked then make a movie about it stating they were the underdogs ;) lol. excited to see stone play for Canada though .

That one time at band camp... is that what the writer was going for?

we didn't get the opportunity to see this duo in Buffalo, but hopefully we will at an international tournament in the near future. They'll be dynamite.

I think this iteration of Team Canada will do well. Not the sexiest group of players but has skill, will work hard, and will be well coached.

I'm just interested to see this new generation of Canadian hockey players play for Canada at the men's level. A lot of these names are from the 2015-2018 or just young Canadians like Marchessault, Henrique, Bertuzzi. These guys are top 6 NHLers so they have a lot of skill.

Why doesn't Canada play a couple of pre-tournament games vs USA? They have an international sized arena in Calgary, and I bet, they would sell it out for any number of games, earning some money for Hockey Canada and making fans happy.

because this tournament just isn't that important; it would mean an extra week-10 day N.A. camp on top of getting over to Europe to play a pre-tournament game there on top of an almost 3 week long tournament. Yeah, good luck trying to get players to sign up for that. Hockey Canada is happy enough to do the 1 week European camp and 1 pre-tournament game. It's enough to be competitive and every now and then come away with the gold.

and besides, we need to save up all those Canada-USA games for the 2022 Summit Series. It's coming.

First practice was yesterday in Vienna. 1 week 1 pre-tournament game. and that's all that is needed.
