I wonder what Willie would be on a team where he was the focal point. He naturally has to take a bit of a backseat with #34 & #16 ahead of the pecking order.

I've been really impressed with him this year, just an elite winger. Wonder what that next contract will look like...

Basically nobody here cried about Nylander. It was like 500k over and a general consensus. Regardless, he is doing really well.
Yep it wasn’t so much the contract but the caving which set the tone for the other negotiations.

Water under the bridge now but the fact that he’s playing so well doesn’t change the past.

Willy is going to be looking for a BIG $$ payday on his next deal.

The better he plays the bigger the $$ will become.

With Leafs also needing to re-sign Matthews at the same time will Leafs be able to afford Nylander?

There's no reason to think we can't keep him around if that's what we want to do. How about we just enjoy our player - that's currently ineligible for an extension - playing well, instead of trying to turn it into a negative?

Favourite player after Matthews on the team, I honestly think he's more talented than Marner, but Mitch possesses better hockey IQ, not that Nylander's is bad or anything. He has 90-100 points in him at his peak imo.

Is IQ really separate from talent? I get what you’re saying though, when Willy’s going full throttle he looks pretty close to as good as Marner.

When I say talent I mean more physical tools. For example, I think Nylander is a better skater than Marner, better top end speed, stronger, better shot and similar level passer but Marner can think the game at a higher level which allows him to create opportunities out of nothing. Both are fantastic

I agree completely. Sometimes it even seems he has better hands and puck control but maybe that’s selling Marner short.

Marner gets paid more and deservedly so.

But Nylander is my favorite after Matthews as well. He makes everything he does look so good. Smooth zone entries, elegant strides, snipes, breakaway dekes etc.

There's a nonchalance and effortlessness to his style.

Mitch, JT and Matty playing well but Willie is the guy who has taken the biggest step up this year. 1.14 PPG, 29 games into the season. Don't think he has ever boldly gone this far before. He's gonna want big bucks in two years.
I've said recently that if this is the Will we've been waiting for, a big strong guy who can win most of the battles, can out skate most opponents, has a elite shot that's hard and highly accurate, and a guy who finally doesn't take shifts off.

If this is Will fully realized I've got no complaints and would be truly ecstatic.

However if he suddenly decides to study tape of Kucherov and started adding some of those extras to his game it wouldn't bother me at all.

As for money, if this guy is the guy we get than the Leafs will be faced with some really hard decisions

Since he came into the NHL he's reminded me a lot of P.Kane in this regard along with the zone entries. Both of those guys can gain zone entries at will and look like they're going for a fun skate while doing it.

Different type.
MM is someone holding the puck and dictate play, he is pretty much the QB whenever he is on the ice. He is pretty much Kane without the shot. It is also easier to play with MM bc he is looking to pass to you, players just need to be ready at their sweet spot and the puck will come. Problem with MM is that sometime he overthinks and over complicates really simple plays.
Willie is someone who drives play and protects the puck well. He is pretty much Mack without that explosiveness. Willie can hold onto the puck as good as anyone in the league, in that aspect, he plays like Forsberg. Problem with Willie is that he is very inconsistent in terms of the style he wants to play shift in and shift out. Like on one shift, he will be driving to the net holding on to the puck while the next shift he will be waiting for his linemates to feed him the puck. What Willie fails to understand is that his linemates might not be in sync with what he has in mind. That’s excluding his lack of efforts here and there from years past. He needs to talk to his linemates more and let them know what he is doing or plan to do.

He reminds me of the Big M. Frank was criticized as slow and lazy, until people realized he just looked that way if you weren't paying attention.
