Bill put it all together earlier this year, which is why seeing this disinterested play again for a long stretch now is so surprising. I’m sure he will get it together, but the lack of desire is something I never excuse for a player and right now defensively he’s meandering around the D zone waiting for someone else to do the work and win a puck. Finish strong Bill, it’s been a season to remember.

meh, he's shown up for the last couple playoffs so I don't doubt he'll be ready come game 1

This part of the season is boring as hell, some of the players probably feel it too

Yup. In elimination games Nylander has more points than Marner and Matthews lol
Willy and tavares should be our leading scorers everyear in the playoffs
They play against the second line and 3/4 dmen on other teams
Marner and matthews get the hardest match ups

Lets deal with this tidbit for a second. People love to talk about Nylander being a beast compared to Matthews and Marner in elimination games.
Look at game 6 and 7 stats of last year and say that again with a straight face given who the 2 were matched against.
In short, Nylander was barely keeping his head above water and was opportunistic which is ok against a great team. Looking at these stats, it is obvious Matthews and Marner came to play and were goalied for the most part. I really don't know what conclusion you make from this because it makes zero sense that you would infer that they should try harder. They were pretty well the best forwards on the ice.

I like my stats my friend but at the end of the day you either just get on the scoresheet or you don't. I think everyone is tired of hearing 'goalied' repeatedly. Also while Nylander may not control possession as much or direct as many chances, I find that Marner and to a lesser extent Matthews have trouble breaking through more when it's tight checking and the opposing team goes into a defensive shell and collapses around the net taking away the slot and prime passing lanes. Marner in particular seems to get boxed out and struggles in those situations despite having the puck a lot.

Prime example of this is Marner having 88% possession in game 7 yet did not record a shot on a goal. Can't even say he was 'goalied' when he didn't hit the net.

You do understand that the components of expected goal% are quantity and quality of actual shots on net for and against right?

It factors in location of shot attempts, yes. Moot point if it was blocked though and expected goals also don't factor in pre shot movement either. You're just reiterating my point, and even Dubas and Keefe see this as a team issue as they specifically went out and got ROR and Acciari because they are effective in front of the net.

The corollary to that is that the more they lead in scoring the more they get the top opponents.

Lately it seems that many teams put out their top line against them, to take advantage of JT's speed.

Top guys are the top guys because they're expected to produce regardless of the situation.

While he does benefit from matchups, I do think one of the reasons why Nylander is able to do pretty well the last few playoffs in particular as more to do with the fact He's able to just completely disassociate himself from external pressure. While dome of the other guys on the team I think get visibly frustrated when the points aren't coming, particularly in must score situations.

there's a few stats i just hate , including the ones being currently discussed here but the quality of competition premise is so misleading . Tougher matchups if you mean playing head to head against 1st lines are much different in many cases than going head to head with the with the opposing shut down lines who's only goal is to shut down your top line . This is even more of a case on defence pairs . Top pairing d may very well not be the best shut down pair that are going to draw the assigmements of shutting down the best players . In your example that's the point . Tavares line is ging to be be facing the top offensive units because teams would be comfortable trading chances with that line and taking advantage that neither player is particularly strong defensively and Tavares himself isn't a speed demon. That's opposed to having to face Mathews / Marner combo who are both very strong defensively and offensively . The d matchups though the Mathews line is definetlely going to be facing the best defensive pairings .

Might be time to change title to "Does Nylander care about cracking 90 points in a season" cause it sure looks like he does not.
