Post-Game Talk: Campbell plays, Leafs win

The hockey world is still trying to avoid the mind-bending fact that the Leafs are an elite defensive team. The $40M in 4 forwards Leafs are an elite defensive team. Get used to it.

With Brodie and Bogosian added, it should have been obvious that this teams D was going to impact their lineup more so than in the recent past. If they didn't understand this, that's to the Leafs advantage.

I hope Dubas finds some improvements to set this team up. The forwards have bought in and are playing solid, two way hockey. We need more such players IMO, where viable.

I think you're misinterpreting what 1st line production looks like. Nylander is on pace for 30/30, Tavares on pace for 65ish pts. Landing at 70+ point paces is a minor increase from where they are, and both are well into 1st line production territory
59 points and 65 points is not what these two should be putting up, sure they play great defence for 16 minutes, but we pay them as our stars, and we need results, they can’t just keep creating chances and not finishing and letting the 1st line finish their chances and win us the game. I only say this because I know that they can be much better, nylander can be a 30G/70 point winger and Tavares can be a 35G/80 point center. For us to do well in the playoffs we will need everyone clicking, and right now they need to start producing

Craziest part? He hasn't stolen a game for us. He's been good, steady and made saves, but I don't remember him standing on his head to keep us in it.
That's the thing. Leafs dont need a goalie to make 10 bell saves 7 times a game. All they've needed is steady goaltending that makes the easy saves, timely saves, and keep the guys loose and fun.

It's a huge thing. Let's not kid ourselves. He will have his downs, but hes such a great man and wonderful attitude so the downs won't be so bad. He also loves the boys around him.

The Tavares line has an xGA per 60 of 1.14 and an xGF of 3.54. Of the lines in the NHL that have played more than 40 mins together, only 1 has a lower xGA and a higher xGF, the Avs third line of Jost, Donskoi and Nichuskin.

I don't think Willy and Tavares have forgotten how to shoot the puck. When their SH% rebound that is going to be a dangerous line.

The win is good and all but I didn't particularly think we paid well. Thankfully we played a flat team or the results could have been different. We continue to be weak along the boards and overplay defense to the side of the puck, leaving open men when the board battles are lost.
PP is atrocious with too many guys standing still and nobody in front screening.
Gally is a lovely player, engaged good strength and some speed. But, he can join the ranks of the stone hand brigade (Kerfoot, Engval, Mik, Rielly, jumbo and maybe one or two more).
We never seem to have the energy level or drive against other teams as we do against Edmonton. They bring the best out of this team. The Peg will be better prepared for us next game.

If I’m Buffalo, you’d need to send Robertson or sandin for ullmark. I seriously think he is their best player right now.
Bernier, maybe he works, would be weird seeing him back, still get a chuckle out of some of the goals he would let in when he was here.
But agree with the idea, get a 1A/1B and split duties, hopefully save a couple mil in cap and use it elsewhere
lol you aint getting either of those guys for a nearly 28 year old backup goalie.

jets fans are bein super crimgy, talkin trash about the raptors who legit just won a world championship. i respect the few fans that seem intelligent and are actually admitting the leafs are better, big respect.

Strong goaltending, special teams, and capitalizing on your high danger chances isn't a recipe for success?

Sounds pretty good to me.

It's not sustainable when you get thoroughly outplayed most nights. The shooting percentage will regress and goaltending can only take you so far. Also, penalties aren't called as much in the playoffs

They need to improve their 5 on 5 play for any shot at a playoff run

Oh shit..... may or may not remember ullmark is a ufa + value I said is too high, probs like a 1st and 2nd like Andersen got maybe more maybe less I think

Andersen was a pending RFA and Ullmark is a pending UFA. This is a straight up pending UFA TDL acquisitionr. Can't be compared at all to Andersen. I'd figure around a 3rd to get him.

I continue to contend that having kids is a huge detriment to his game, even if you're rich and can afford lots of help it's still extra work and stress and lack of sleep.

I'm surprised more NHL stars aren't like Crosby or Sundin and postpone having kids until later in their career if at all.

They should discourage players from having kids until they win a cup. Celibate until you celebrate.

They're both dominating possession, shots, scoring chances, Corsi, fenwick, hdcf, etc. Both have lower OIsh% than you would expect for players of their calibre, usually pointing to worse than average luck, and usually not sustainable.

At their current pace, they're the 46th and 64th highest scoring forwards in the NHL. There are 93 first line forwards in the NHL, by definition.

Quit looking for clouds in a blue sky.

It takes two to tango. The positionally sound and committed defense from the Leafs helped them appear less impressive.

I notice a theme from this team during interviews, it's team first. That bodes well this postseason.

ive watched quite a few jets games and they generally get outplayed like this every game. not impressed at all, its just all flash but no substance.

I would say he gets the Reimer treatment. 4th which gets bumped up, or maybe just a prospect and a 4th with no conditions.

We have some prospects we can toss Buffalo, and their pool is pretty sad so it would help them out.
