Post-Game Talk: Campbell plays, Leafs win

The hockey world is still trying to avoid the mind-bending fact that the Leafs are an elite defensive team. The $40M in 4 forwards Leafs are an elite defensive team. Get used to it.

Pretty meh game overall. Definitely a mid-week, mid-season feel. Would like to see the Leafs take advantage of at least 1 of those early power plays and take the Jets completely out of the game but I guess in the end practicing defense for 40 minutes was probably better.

Easiest game of the season in a weak division. The score didn't do it justice. The Leafs were never at risk of losing this one.

This defense is a gift to our goalies. So few scoring chances. Makes a good goalie like Campbell look great, and a bad goalie like Hutch look decent.

Pretty much. Leafs have a control of pretty much every game they play.

It's been a while since I've seen the Leafs just lay an egg and just not be in any game. They dictate how the game is played and play it that way nightly. Whether the goals are there or not.

Once the PP floodgates open, it's over. Still think we'll win this division by double digits.

The win is good and all but I didn't particularly think we paid well. Thankfully we played a flat team or the results could have been different. We continue to be weak along the boards and overplay defense to the side of the puck, leaving open men when the board battles are lost.
PP is atrocious with too many guys standing still and nobody in front screening.
Gally is a lovely player, engaged good strength and some speed. But, he can join the ranks of the stone hand brigade (Kerfoot, Engval, Mik, Rielly, jumbo and maybe one or two more).
We never seem to have the energy level or drive against other teams as we do against Edmonton. They bring the best out of this team. The Peg will be better prepared for us next game.

It's interesting to think this team is now defensively steady, especially in the right side, when they've struggled there for so long. Late in the game we go down to 4 D and it's only Muzzin who is a LD

Our "slump" actually had us playing the best defensive hockey of the season.

When the goaltending isn't shit, teams have tons of trouble scoring on us.

Yep, they give up an average number of shots but limit the quality so well. It's hard to imagine a goalie struggling behind a defense like that

They need to fix the powerplay, though. It's very predictable right now.

Enjoyed the 2 pts but if we were playing a different team we would not have won. There are still little things to fix with this team. They are not championship caliber in my eyes.

Craziest part? He hasn't stolen a game for us. He's been good, steady and made saves, but I don't remember him standing on his head to keep us in it.

That's because he's always in position I think. He's barely ever caught swimming.

Agreed. Hopefully we find out Freddy is heading to LTIR tomorrow and Dubby acquires Ullmark, Bernier, Raanta or Kuemper to split duties with Soup.

If I’m Buffalo, you’d need to send Robertson or sandin for ullmark. I seriously think he is their best player right now.
Bernier, maybe he works, would be weird seeing him back, still get a chuckle out of some of the goals he would let in when he was here.
But agree with the idea, get a 1A/1B and split duties, hopefully save a couple mil in cap and use it elsewhere

That was a textbook defensive clinic with the only GA coming off a 4 minute PP.
