Kyle Clifford is a fan favorite and has played his entire career with the LA Kings. Goal in Game 1 against the Rangers and then assisted on the Cup winner. Came in as a kid into an era that still had enforcers and, until the Reaves KO, was absolutely crushing it. He is one of the rare Cup guys on this team that hasn't regressed.
No qualms with anyone being upset about it: he is one of those guys that deserves an appreciation thread no matter how many posters want to ***** about a $1.6MM cap hit or the fact that he isn't scoring 20 goals from the 4th line. That being said: you have to trade him since he is a UFA. If the Kings still want him for the "culture" thing or whatever (Good job with Hoven saying he'd never be traded) and he wants to be part of a rebuild, then he can come back. If he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild, he walks and they get nothing.
I thought that Clifford could pull a 2nd from a younger team that needs some jam and veteran leadership. Leafs fit that bill: especially with Dubas being his agent in a past life. I echo the sentiments of others on here where Clifford was the real target and Campbell became a thing once Andersen went down.
I think Campbell is purely the CBJ 3rd. Clifford is the conditional 3rd plus Moore. To Blake's credit, I think the squeeze put on here is getting to add the six wins/playoffs condition to actually boost Clifford to a 2nd since--even thought it would be Campbell making the condition happen--there is probably a strong sense around the league that Clifford coming back here as a UFA is very much in play.
There is no way that they just sit on an additional 3rd and 4th in this year's draft. This is what you have to do when you are rebuilding. Collect as much powder as possible and keep it dry so you are ready to strike when opportunity presents itself.
