It sounds like the plan is for him to start the year on the Marlies as a C . I think we will see him on the big team at the deadline at the soonest or next year at the latest.

Exactly. Sounds like the plan is to keep him in the AHL. The first callups after the Deadline will likely be the likes of Frattin, Leivo and Carrick. Allowing William the year to continue to grow and develop in the AHL.

Except Nylander didn't add all of his 20 lbs over the off season. He added it during the season. And he had a fantastic season with it. So it looks like it did suddenly make him a better hockey player.

So you're saying that he gradually gained weight throughout the year, and this suddenly made him a better player.

Think about that for a second.

Yeah, I doubt they will want to ruin the Marlies playoff run and team chemistry by taking their number 1 C away from them. The following year Marner can replace him. Still seems like too much to hope for that both will be centres but boy oh boy, if they are we will have tackled one of the hardest parts of the rebuild.

I think he is noting that Nylander improved as the year went along and he thinks the additional weight was helping him with that process. It's not that unreasonable. What I find difficult to fathom is how he gained during the season, usually they lose as the season progresses.

Marner can't play AHL next year, I don't think.

It's NHL or OHL again

Was expecting that to happen. Hopefully Keefe keeps him at C all season long, and help mold his overall game as well

Expecting Brown to be one of his wingers, which should be the top line for the Marlies at ES and PP

Putting him down the middle is definitely the right call. Now with Mitch, we're developing two potential first line centermen.

Nylander was a stud at center in the SHL.

When he did play center at the WJC he won more than 50% of his faceoffs, so hopefully he continues that as well.

I just hope that if his point totals take a hit next year because he's still adjusting to that position in the North American pro-game, people don't lose their mind lol.

I meant the following year after Nylander's graduation.

2015-2016 (this upcoming year) Marner can't play in AHL. Nylander C in AHL.
2016-2017 Nylander likely in NHL, Marner can't play in AHL.

I'd expect Marner to be in the NHL anyways when he's 19.

HFBoards posters overreacting to something? Never.

The pic of kappa and nylander
Very noticeable differences, nylander has bigger forearms
And legs by a fair margin

That was a quote of the OP's words, the point being he didn't seem to need a year or two (or forever) to adjust to the extra weight as the OP was insinuating - it helped him right away.

I doubt either are off the Leafs at the beginning of next season.

Management said they'll make it hard for rookies to break onto the squad which is fine. I'm fine with it if neither are on the big team this year, so long as they don't deserve to be on the team.

But Babcock has 100% stated that if a player is good enough to steal a good spot on the team. They will be on the team. And honestly I have a very difficult time seeing Nylander not being better than most of our forwards not named Kadri/JVR/Healthy Lupul this year. If he's better than everyone else he won't get sent down. Babcock said this.

And no comparable caliber of prospect (Especially a forward) as Marner. Has ever been outside the NHL for more than 1 season. Unless stuck in contract in Russia or Europe.

I'm all for patience. But Leaf fans are going overboard with it. If they had their way neither would play in the NHL until they are 23. Even Dylan Larkin has a real chance of making Detroit and he's 19 and not as good as Nylander (Although very close).

Also side note: I guess we should go back and delete all the posts saying Nylander is a winger eh?

I appreciate what you are saying but I think three things work against that possibility.

1. Shanagement ( I think I owe Daisy a copyright fee for that term ) has said they want no one up who has nothing left to learn at the lower levels.

2. Nylander wants to be a Center and has no experience with that on North American ice which suggests he has things to learn.

3. Today Dubas said Nylander would be the Marlies first line C and Marner would go back to London.

So I'm going to disagree. Now of course one of them may have such a great camp and preseason that Shanagement changes their tune but it seems pretty clear that is not the expected outcome. They want them to get stronger and to protect them. Time will tell.

Ultimately it's the coaches call on who makes the roster. So we'll see. As of now the plan is Nylander goes back. But if he's better than most of our other forwards, which is a very real possibility. He's probably on the big team.

I more year of junior, maybe one year in the A.

Going to Reiterate.

There's no way Marner is outside of the NHL for more than 1 year.

No prospect of a similar calibre has ever been outside the NHL for more than 1 year. Especially a forward.

A lot can happen in a year so I won't dispute you but Claude Giroux did that exact thing and that is one of the two most common comparisons, though Giroux was drafted much lower.
