Obviously a head shot isn't the best way to evaluate the size of a player, but you can definitely tell he's added size and muscle in comparison to where he was about 14 months ago.

Excellent analysis.

He also appears to have lost some lip thickness. This would clearly suggest he's been working on his faceoffs.

However, Leaf fans should be concerned that in pic #1, he is wearing his Leafs jersey, and looks happy. In pic #2, he looks concerned, and has taken off his jersey and hung it on a hook in the background. Sounds like he might be looking for a way out.

Well it was almost funny, I'll give you that.

Here's an actual full picture of Nylander for those Nylander analysts to mull over.

doesn't look like the specimen that people were speculating about on the previous page.

The reason I made my comment, that put everyone on the previous page up in arms is because each year we go through the same talk on the Toronto board. Dating back to the days when Stajan and Steen were rookies. Each year it was, OMG they spent the entire summer training, but each year they look to be about the same (heck stajan still doesn't look like he's ever seen the inside of the gym).

After Steen and Stajan, it was Schenn, OMG he spent the entire offseason bulking up, he's up to 230 lbs! What happens? Leafs coaches say he's out of shape.

Then it was kadri... OMG he worked out with Gary Roberts all offseason, what happens? Eakins says he's fat.

................... rinse and repeat.

He gained 20 lbs from Leafs prospect camp last year to end of Marlies season this year. No idea how much he put on since end of season til now. But Nylander said 189lbs was his weight in like April.

Last offseason everyone on these boards was gushing about how Mackinnon gained so much mass over the offseason and how he'd be a beast during his sophomore season... look how that backfired.

There is no evidence supporting 20lbs of weight is going to make someone suddenly a better hockey player.

Nobody said it would. What it does do it put him in "NHL size" range. The big knock everyone kept saying was that he was too small. Well he's not small anymore so that's one thing you can stop talking about when saying why he won't succeed in the future.

Also MacK's season wasn't exactly terrible. Entire Avs team overachieved in his rookie year, which led to his totals being inflated due to high SH%. And then this past year it was the opposite, teams SH% went down the drain and his was extremely poor as well. I'd be shocked if he doesn't have a huge year.

My only worry is that he comes in like Kadri did in his second camp -- bigger but noticeably slower.

I don't think that will happen, and its definitely nice to see him looking a little more "mature". He could be NHL ready in September.

Hope to see this kid in the NHL this fall. Great talent.

Except Nylander didn't add all of his 20 lbs over the off season. He added it during the season. And he had a fantastic season with it. So it looks like it did suddenly make him a better hockey player.
