Skilled. But invisible last 4-5 games.

I haven't seen him play in those games but have seen the box scores and he seems to lead the team in shots on goals every game He had 8 shots in one game I think he has been playing well but just has not gotten any breaks.

Another year in college wouldn't hurt Madden. A lot of filling out can happen from 18-21 , especially for kids like Ty who didn't mature physically early.

Should have been way higher in the draft, another Jeff bracket amazing find

Surprised how quiet this thread has been.

Currently tied for NCAA lead in goals; 12g, 22p in 16 games with Northeastern this season. What kind of ceiling is on this 3rd rounder?

Think it's a product of the Cancuks actually having some decent prospects graduate in the last few years. Not so rabid for any prospect that shows the littlest bit of potential anymore.

As for his potential he definitely looks to have the tools to be a middle 6 NHL player. His skating and movement is excellent, he has NHL level hockey sense and IQ and has some pretty slick hands to boot. I think a lot depends on his much weight he'll be able to put on. If he stays skinny will he have the skills to be a top 6 winger? Or would he fall into that awkward category so many do where they aren't strong enough to play in a bottom 6 role but not quite skilled enough to play in a top 6 role.

If he can fill out to 180lbs+ with his skating and IQ I can at least see him being a solid 3rd line player and checking center that has enough skill to add offensive to a 3rd line. Hopefully he can get strong enough that his weight doesn't hold him back

When adjusting for age and league, how does he compare against how good Gaudette did ?

I don't follow much of Madden

What's his upside, is there a good chance he can make it to the nhl. If yes what his upside 3rd line center/4th line center?

He is small. Size matter less now however if you are small. You need to have elite skills to make up for the lack of size. Does Madden have that?

That's a tough comparison. Output is pretty similar.

Where Gaudette is a decent puck handler Madden is an outstanding one, and he can create more with less. Slightly faster than Gaudette too which I believe makes his scoring line potential better.

Gaudette has a better nose for the net and is really good on the power play as we've seen, which is slowly solidifying his pro role as a decent 3rd liner you can slot on the power play.

Madden is plus in all situations, there is a reason why he led all USA forwards in TOI at the world juniors this year. I think he could be an effective 2nd line forward in the NHL. Skill isn't the question, it's if he can handle the game physically which I think he's slippery enough to.

He’s definitely very underrated.

I would say Madden should end up as a second line winger. His main problems are his size and skating. He’s going to need to put on a lot of weight, and he’s going to need to do that without making his skating worse. His skating for a sub 6’0 defensemen isn’t that good. Not bad, but not a strength. I really like his offensive skill set and he has a great hockey IQ. He also has a good compete level.

Putting on weight will make his skating worse? You sound like a guy who is out of date. Athletes who put on good weight get more powerful, and faster, in the vast majority of cases. Unless Ty sits on a couch and eats junk food for the entire off season you can expect more speed, not less, as he matures.

Kind of surprised that his skating is being singled out as a weakness. To me, it looks like a strength. Maybe not elite skating, but certainly above average.

His size is a factor, but he has the sort of agility, mental aggressiveness and high hockey IQ that should help him in the pros. We'll see what happens when he gets to the AHL.

It's tough to put on weight without sacrificing some athleticism. Skating is a bit different but it's more about technique. He would get more powerful but a bit less nimble. Personally I think he shouldn't focus on bulking up too much, 170lbs max

Nonsense. Most young athletes try to put on weight, which translates into strength. Especially in sports like hockey, where explosiveness is trained for, rather than endurance, like they used to in the old days. Explosiveness needs large leg muscles. There is the odd exception, but a kid like Madden will get faster and more explosive as he bulks up.

Technique is also important, but strength, for someone who lacks it, only comes when you put on muscle and weight.

I'm going to try and watch him this month. There's some fantastic reviews of him from people I respect on these boards. I've got the December 14th game against Darthmouth circled since it'll be on tsn3.

His skating is fine, he does need to add to the 155 lbs if those stats are accurate and the most up to date.
