They saw through the Hockey Canada/Exceptional status hype. I wouldn't have batted an eye if he went 1, but he clearly wasn't above the pack in this draft.

As others have said, anyone who saw him play this year knows he did not play like a 1OA. Just like at the Top Prospect game where he scored early and then disappeared, he seemed to assume the 1OA was his and he could coast.

Only hockey pucks like us care about who goes first so if he sets the NHL on fire, he can have the last laugh. Let's hope he does.
