Back to Winnipeg in 22/23.

23/24. 2004 birthday so it's NHL or juniors. If he makes the roster, he takes Okposo (56% D-Zone) spot. I guess that's fine, seems pointless for him to spend another full season in the WHL. No way you start him at center in his first year.

Skinner Tage Tuch
Quinn Cozens Peterka
Krebs Mitts Savoie
Asplund XXXXX Olofsson

Funny that Savoie has a January 1, 2004 birthday, missing out on AHL eligibility for 23/24 by one day (or a couple minutes perhaps). In normal times, I believe he would be exempt from the age 20 requirement by having four CHL seasons under his belt, but he chose to play 20/21 in the USHL/AJHL while the CHL was in Covid chaos. I could see the Sabres appealing the interpretation of this rule eventually.

One positive of his birthdate is he'll likely star on both the 2023 and perhaps 2024 Canadian WJC teams, unless he's in the NHL in December 2024. (And maybe even the late 2022 WJC??)

That early birthday stat is something else. Science.

I didn’t read the whole thread but it’s worth noting that Savoie hasn’t been cleared for contact yet from his shoulder injury. So don’t expect to see him doing much at dev camp. He is skating again but Certainly no 3 on 3 tournament for him

He said he was cleared in one of the post draft interviews. He also said he's supposed to take it easy but he's cleared.

Oh good. i know he didn’t do anything at the combine so that turned around quickly

Specifically he said something like it is now fully healed but he needs to add strength back to it

I wonder if the team will keep him out as a precautionary measure. The last thing he needs is hurting it again and missing the Nats camp or the start of his WHL season with a re-occurrence/worsening of something over an intra-squad scrimmage.

I was ecstatic when they made this pick. I knew he was ranked highly, put up good production, and played a fast, aggressive, skill game. Had seen the CHL top prospects game and was impressed.

The more that I read and watch post draft, the more doubts are creeping in. Even on his highlights, I don't see a lot of stuff that's going to translate well to 5v5 success at the NHL level. His goals and assists all look competent, but most of it is power play, shots through traffic, finishing great setups by other players, capitalizing on bad defense. Etc.

I'm not saying I don't like the pick. There is definitely a lot to like. I need to see more though to really decide whether the nagging doubts are warranted.

I might have preferred Nazar with the pick, but I like the player profile of both. If he turns out, he's exactly what they need, IMO.

Edit: one thing I'm more sure of... he's a winger, rather than a C.

13 of his 35 goals last season came on the PP. He had one shorty and the rest were even strength. EliteProspects doesn't seem to break out his assists that way so I can't tell how many of his total points came at even strength, I don't know if there is another stat collector that has that info for WHL.

Power play doesn't equal bad goal, in my mind. My point was that I didn't actually see him creating that many chances in a way that i think he'll need to in the nhl. Without analyzing every one of the even strength goals, my impression was that many/most were created by others or opportunistic.

I would expect that if he makes it to the Sabres, he will get PP time, get set up by other good players, and have opportunities to makes plays. So he can still be successful even if he's not driving play. And I'm not sure he can't drive, I'm just saying I didn't necessarily see it in the relatively small amount I've seen of him.

Guys compare his points with other players in the top 10 at PP on draft, how much did they score at ES and at PP? I've seen the comparison before and there's almost no difference there seems to be with Wright and anyone else. Also, points at PP are not a minus, this is an additional plus. Savoie stud, great choice.

So you get worried after the pick and your solution would be to draft pretty much the same but worse version of the player.😳

Why do people act like getting points on the power play is a bad thing? Every good offensive player in the history of the game racks up big time PP points. You want your PP to be a weapon for you. You want players that can strive on the PP.

Savoie drives his line offensively at 5 on 5. What seems to be the issue?
