Meh performing at the WJC is so overrated. How many players have we seen show good performances at the WJC and show absolutely nothing at the NHL level. It would’ve been nice to have him play meaningful games for his country, but he will have a similar opportunity for meaningful games when his team is competing for the championship in the W. Hopefully this omission inspires him to go on a tear.

And about Savoie at center or not.... no one knows. I was convinced Dylan Cozens was a wing, as were a lot of hockey "experts." And here we are.

We know Hockey Canada selects for role. They have a fairly stacked top 6 already and since Savoie missed the summer camp due to his shoulder AND didn't come out of the gate burying the competition (nor did Geekie who is also missing from the selection list), it's not unheard of that he's not among the selected.

Now... I do wonder what sort of evil he can do to the 'dub with this sort of motivation. That's what I'm most interested to see - does he rip the 'dub a new one for not being included?

I'm going to say, I expect it.

One hit wonder? He is over a ppg and he was a consensus top 3 pick before last season started

To build on that, he was an applicant for exceptional status as a 15-year old which while denied, he still played over 20 games for the Ice at that age. The dude's got chops. But he (and not for nothing Geekie and even Benson) haven't been offensively dominant thus far. And for the U20's team, a player normally is ripping his league up. Now... Voit is slinging the puck around the OHL to the tune of the most assists there and he too didn't make the invite roster nor did his teammate Sasha Pastujov who was at the summer U20's for the US team.

I don’t think him missing the WJC changes anything I view about him. I have zero doubt that he will be an effective NHL player. My biggest concern is the upside. He has a man’s body, hardly any room to add weight. Yes, he will get better with NHL coaching and can optimize his strength - but I just don’t see him becoming worlds better than he currently is. In the NHL I see that as a 40-60 point, middle six guy who can contribute on the PP and PK. Maybe not exactly what you want with the 9th pick, but that’s where my mind is at. If he turns out better it will be a pleasant surprise.

It should be interesting to see where he ends the season on his own team. Hopefully he's just getting going

Both Pederson and McClennon (and the defenseman Zloty who is ahead of him by a point) are all 20. Pederson will be 21 before the end of the season. Overagers are definitely guys who a good team will rely upon for offense and in the case of Winnipeg, they very much are getting that out of them both. They also have the benefit of being able to roll three lines to get matchup problems against other WHL teams and that spreads the scoring around more.

I don’t know - if you get a 50-60 guy at 9. Think that’s a big win. I think there’s a big misnomef that number nine is an elite pick… If you look at the data, a lot of people bust from that range and rarely do you get a a star. 2nd line is a great outcome. Also, unless I’m mistaken he was one of the only people there at 9 that draftnics spoke about having elite potential? Sort of the opposite of what you’re saying…

Yeah the draftniks (and Jerry Forton) have said he has that high-end upside. I see it differently, but I very well could be wrong. It’s mostly rooted in my belief that he peaked very early in life and therefore dominated at every level because he was far more physically mature. There’s no way for me to know for sure - but for now it’s my opinion

I still think he has elite potential, I thought so before the draft and now. He has all the tools and is pretty versatile.

Player for 60 points of course also sounds not bad, but if for example, he plays on the wing Tage (Skinner is not eternal), then I will thinkhe will score more than 60 points.

Man,

Just when you think maybe things could be turning for this organization. Hopefully Savoie turns out to be more than a one hit wonder in the WHL.
Things are turning for the organization, we're what? Top 6? in league goals for. I know were close to last in goals against though. But we've rumbled against the best in the league & putting up a fight. If Sammy was healthy, and we had solid goaltending I personally think we'd be in a playoff position in regards to standings right now. And we're not far off.

everyone in media and fans alike judge players as early as 14. Savoie showed a bit of promise while in development camp. I've personally only seen highlights and break downs of some on ice play in the WHL this season. I still think he'll succeed,

Player development is not linear and it isn't over a short time horizon so there really isn't a reason to worry right now. Let's see how he responds to this - I suspect it will be with a bit of fire.

Those worried about Savoie, need to relax.

From: someone who’s watched his last 3 games and will continue to watch them now. He’s fine. Development in progress. Let’s not banish him to 2018-2020 Tage Thompson island before he’s even out of his D+1 season.

You want to worry about someone, Mittelstadt’s right here for the picking.
