Who said he has unlimited potential. and you go ahead and limit what prospects can become. in the end you know no more than anyone else. What reason do you have to assume he doesnt have the possibility of becoming a star? and who knows where he caps out at,
the second coming of Gretzky is a little over the top from a simple skies the limit comment dont you think?
maybe its time for a nap. you seem cranky

Dude you literally said you felt that "the sky is the limit" for his potential.

I'm not saying that Byfield can't be a star player. What I AM saying is that he, like every player in the NHL, has a cap. It ain't the sky. I'm not even certain it's 1st line potential at this point.

skies the limit doesnt mean hes going to be gretzky.....
It means he has no limit. who knows exactly where that lands what your trying to do is make me say is will become this or that but fact is neither one of us know.
Why are you trying to make it into some big deal?
actually dont answer I don't care
have a good day I had enough of this pointless conversation with you

A player's potential ceiling and potential floor helps to create a realistic expectation of what a player is going to become in the NHL. If his potential has no limit, no ceiling then he's got the potential to be the second coming of Gretzky, and we know that's bullshit.

And I'm going to ask again WHY people think Byfield has UNLIMITED POTENTIAL! Because being big and skating fast in a straight line isn't proof of it.

If that's all you think he's got going for him, why should we bother trying to 'convince' you?

That's clearly not all there is to his game. Hell his AHL goal reel is 75% cycle/netfront chances, very few on the rush, which is the popular parrot complaint. Most of his goals were him walking off 2-3 guys on the boards in pursuit while he banged one in using power, reach, or moves. The reason he's in the NHL instead of the AHL is so he can start translating those things instead of getting in the habit of shaking everyone on the ice, which he was starting to do with regularity.

You might just see a big fast oaf, that's a 'you' problem. Comparing him to Taylor Pyatt is just showing your cards. There's already a lot of subtlety to his game. He's working on the other stuff.

its a pretty simple saying. it means his potential has no limit. he can reach anywhere and that doesn't just limit to prospects like Lindros, Crosby or McDavid
Doesn’t that apply to just about every single prospect ever then?

Doesn't that support it? So far, he hasn't generated much off of the rush in the AHL and NHL, so the concern that all of his rush goals in the OHL might not translate to the pro game looks like it might've been a valid one.

Only player that scores consistently like that is McDavid and I don't see anything close to that here. He needs to be in the AHL with the puck on his stick at all times... All the powerplay minutes and all the end of game situation minutes.

The compliant was that he only scores on the rush and doesn't score in other ways. That was the oft-parroted concern that most people ripped from the popular scouting video.

The clear results are that most of his goals in the pro game thus far are NOT scored off the rush.

That's an improvement and adjustment. To complain that he's not scoring as much off the rush is moving the goalposts as his most frequent critics are wont to do.

But again you’re talking about a whopping 12 total AHL goals… not much a sample you’re offering here

There’s no goal posts, your whole point is “He scored 8 goals that weren’t off the rush!” As if eight goals is meaningful in any kind of way.

The point is, ultimately, he's not playing a trading chances rush game at the pro level. The goals prove it, the eye test proves it, the Kings style proves it. But having that tool in his toolbox is nice, not a detriment, at this point.

I'm sure you'll paint that as a negative somehow though.

That's not moving the goalposts because it's exactly what was worried about prior to the draft. What's moving the goalposts is mischaracterizing that concern as "he only scores on the rush and doesn't score in other ways." The concern was always that the majority of his goals were scored off of the rush, so a majority of his goals might not translate to the NHL. He still scored in other ways in the OHL and was expected to in the pros, so the fact that he has scored in other ways is not proof that the concern was unfounded or that he's improved and adjusted. You shouldn't just look at the ratio of non-rush-to-rush goals being higher now and conclude that he improved his non-rush scoring, not when his overall scoring is down, and it's down mostly because his rush scoring has been way down since turning pro. Again, that's what was worried might happen, so it's perfectly consistent with past discussions to be discussing it now.

I don't particularly disagree, but with Dustin Brown on LA's bottom-five-in-the-league top power play line, most fans are over here wondering why he's not getting those opportunities at the NHL level either.

For as much as we talk about his skills off the rush, I'm most impressed with his play in front of the net. Park his 6'5 220 frame in front of the goalie and let him use his reach to score in the dirty areas. Instead we get black-hole Brown giving us aneurysms. It's a nightmare.

Exactly this.

All I know is I’ve never seen a prospect defended so aggressively despite clearly not being where you want him to be right now. How many Lafreniere is a bust threads have we had yet Byfield “looks great” despite playing at the pace of a poor 4th liner

Why do you have such an intense interest in Byfield? You clearly aren’t much of a fan yet you are in here defending your *opinion* like it’s a life or death moment. It’s pathetic.

everyone knew Byfield was going to take some extra time to hit his stride but because he hasn’t done it fast enough for you there are major concerns? He just turned 19 at the end of august. With the way you post about him you’d think he’s already 21 or 22.

move along, Jeeze.

He’s had concerns since before being drafted. I was called a moron repeatedly for simply pointing them out. Now they seems to be completely correct.

I’ve never once called him a bust and would rather nothing more than him to succeed, Canada needs a player like him desperately and the Kings success is completely irrelevant to the Wings.

So yes it’s completely fine to question what’s going on and discuss what’s holding him back. Apparently with this prospect though, saying anything other than “he looks great” or “it’s all because of Brown” requires you to get blasted.

It’s okay to admit the prospect isn’t doing great so far, he’ll probably get it together eventually. We have posters actually saying Lafreniere should be in the AHL, but apparently the best way for Byfield to learn in in the NHL? How many prospects have to keep getting ruined by being rushed?

Nope I comment about a ton of prospects. This just happens to be the only thread where making any negative comment about a prospect who’s clearly struggling is met with Kings fans/Byfield fans resorting to name calling
