From the text of the tweet, I expected something a lot more impressive. That was rather mundane, especially for 3-on-3 OT, and the fact that he needed 3-on-3 OT to get his first point in 6 AHL games doesn't help. He may eventually become a beast, but the hyping of everything that he does in the absence of truly impressive production is getting rather silly, IMO. FYI, this isn't directed at you, but at that tweeter and in general.

It was 3 on 3 and everyone was dead against a team that is COV-19 struck if I remember correctly. Nice shot though. I hope he gets some games soon I wanna see him with the big boys.

You took the words out of my mouth thanks.

A lot of his scoring in juniors came off the rush I really want to see how it translates to the NHL he's huge and has damn good skating for his size.

He did just come back from covid. Was getting back into game shape after leg fracture then got covid. Kid is also 19, only allowed to play in the AHL because of the covid rules from last season.
His season has been a whopping 6 interrupted games. It was/is a nice goal.

It was a nice goal just was expecting to see more than a 3 on 3 vs tired players rush with that tweet caption.

True, but the tweet came from a fan not some nationally recognized publication. Guy has 1,500 followers. As fans, we get excited easily, both positive and negative.
It was a nice goal, nothing more or less. As a Kings fan, I'm hoping to see more. But his season hasn't gone as planned with the leg and covid. His season should be judged on how it ends. This beginning should be taken in context and hopefully grown from here.

Yeah, I'm understanding of all of that and it was a nice goal, just not exactly special. A lot of players could score that in OT in the AHL, so I don't see how the tweeter gets "look out, NHL" (to paraphrase) out of it. I'm not trying to be hard on Byfield, but on the hype whenever he does something nice and people interpret it as a sign that he'll be a monster in the NHL, which seems like confirmation bias to me.

I own him in a fantasy league and I’m certainly concerned. I hope he doesn’t give me the same treatment Dylan Strome did. He of course has a wonderful toolbox and I’m totally willing to look past an injury-riddled start. But it’s tough to watch Raymond and at times Stützle do their thing. I agree that it wasn’t the prettiest goal per se, but it’s nice to see young guys score wristers from a distance. If I remember correctly it took him a while to get going in the AHL last year as well.

The main thing I want to see more of from Byfield is an ability to consistently create offence with a defender all over him - that's probably the #1 thing you want from any big, powerful centre. Right now he's great with time space, but I'd say once a defender is close to him, he's not great at making plays.

He's also a 19 year old playing against men, so I'm not TOO worried, but IMO that's the big weakness in his game that needs to improve.

I am surprised you are saying this because that is one thing you saw numerous times last season.

You can never see it enough but who is “at his best” at making plays with a defender in your neck anyway. Most players are at their best with time and space, I guess.

I see other things that could improve even more.

He deserves a break due to the situation (Injury/Covid). But, I wouldn't really throw the AHL age thing as a plus. For a 2nd overall drafted forward, it is insanely rare to not be a full time NHLer in your D+2 season. The last example of it I believe is JVR.

You think he should have been dressed with a fractured ankle anyway ?

Ok

No, the point was people saying he deserves a break for being a 19 year old in the AHL are stretching it. The part about dressing with a fractured ankle is a complete strawman. Picks that high are generally expected to be making an impact in the NHL in their D+2. Hell, most 2nd overall picks who are forwards are in the NHL in their D+1. The last one I believe prior to Beniers and Byfield was Sam Reinhart.

Hmm, from the Byfield games I’ve seen, he tends to make very simple plays with a defender nearby - that, or protect the puck and try to use his skating to get time/space back. When he has time/space he’s quite electric, and certainly his puck protection is great too, but when he freshly gets the puck with a defender on him, I haven’t seen him create with nice dekes and passes in tight like Matthews, Eichel, Getz, etc. For me that’s a big difference between star “big 1Cs”, and more middle 6 types.

But this is predominantly seeing him in the OHL, WJC and NHL, not AHL. Totally possible he’s improved on this and I just haven’t seen it!

He fractured his ankle in pre season otherwise he would be in the NHL.

Most are glad he is playing again because he was injured last season as well. You attach too much importance to useless stats about former 2nd overall picks without looking any further.

No, I know his history. Probably better than you, considering I know people who have been scouting him since he was on York Simcoe Express. I said he deserves a break for those issues, but I don't think the "well he's 19 and in the AHL and is only there due to a covid exception" is that impressive of an argument. In a regular year, he's likely get the same treatment just being put on loan for 2 weeks like you guys did with Brayden Schenn a decade ago, and then after 2 weeks get a trial run in the NHL or be back in the O.

This is a nothing play 3 on 3 with tired players. He may be a really good NHL center but this video doesn't show anything.

I doubt it, that you put effort in his history. You thought he was assigned to Ontario and got injured. Lets face it otherwise it doesnt make much sense.

He played in the NHL at the end of last season. There was a roster spot for him available but he never made it due to an injury. Surprisingly he was sooner back than expected.

Now you talk about him not being in the NHL in his D+2 year and other excuses from fans, 6 games into the season. He should have been activated with LA after his injury, you think ?

I am not buying it. You are slowly implying things.

You may be right but at least be reasonable with fair arguments.

More talking about how he isn't exactly lighting up the AHL. This year or last year. To use the age excuse is far-reaching, by saying if it wasn't for the alteration to the NHL/CHL agreement he'd be in the NHL or Sudbury. Which was the post I responded to. And, honestly, most forwards drafted 2nd overall are in the NHL right after their draft. Kakko, Svechnikov, Patrick, Laine, Eichel, Barkov, Landeskog and Seguin. The only recent exception was Sam Reinhart.

I obviously know his history. I've followed his career since he was at YSE. Hell, my post history would even show this. I even said he gets a break for the broken ankle and covid. But, I don't think the "he's just a 19 year old in the AHL" is really that impressive of an argument accomplishment-wise for non-production. We are talking about a heavily hyped 2nd overall pick.

I think the point he’s trying to make (which I agree with) is that his injury/COVID are valid reason for a slow start, but his age isn’t because 2OA picks usually plays in the NHL in their D2 season. He’s not saying that Byfield is bad for not making the NHL right out of the gate this year because we all know why he didn’t.

The 2nd overall doesnt apply to Byfield as much as other picks. When was the last time a project was drafted in the top 3?
If he was really polished and NHL ready hed have been 1st overall or if he was closer to his ceiling and playing this way hed have been in the 8-15 draft range.
This is a really raw player that has potential to be absolutely dominant by his early 20s. It could also never happen and he can be a middle or bottom sixer but if all goes planned I think he breaks out once he develops fully and properly.

Kid scores a goal and gets a half page of posters who need to tell everyone how not very impressed they are.

No, someone (the tweeter) suggested how impressive the goal was and others felt the need to disagree. That seems fair.

For the "He should be in the NHL" posters, he made the team. He broke his ankle at the end of the preseason and was getting ready to make his return when he got Covid. His current AHL stint is conditioning to bring him back, it's not a harbinger of 'he's not good enough' or whatever pile of bullshit has been peddled for the last page or so.

Jesus Christ, if you need any more proof this kid can do no right, read the last 20 posts.

Any other prospect would get a 'welcome back, kid' for his first games coming off injury and illness but Byfield gets a page of 'yawn, he's D+2, should be leading the NHL in scoring, I'm not impressed' with no context.

This is completely irrational venom.
