C Otto Stenberg - Frölunda HC J18, J18 Region (2023, 25th, STL)

Maybe but many called Eklund the best forward in his draft class, and Holtz was a borderline top 5 player on a ton of boards as well. Both have been a bit underwhelming since being drafted though.
Eklund was (still is IMO) overrated because he put up good stats in the SHL (and most people are just stat-watchers). I remember people telling me he was a better prospect than Raymond because he had better stats in the SHL. I never bought that for a second.

Carlsson has a unique blend of size/skill and plays down the middle. I am pretty sure I will be higher on him than I was Eklund because he has more projectable traits. Still trying to form an opinion on Stenberg, but may also end up liking him more too.

I never thought Eklund was quite as good a prospect as Raymond personally, but I did prefer him to Holtz, and he was my 2nd favorite forward from the 2021 class. Making a comparison between him and Stenberg at this point is so difficult anyway considering Stenberg still has to play his entire draft season, so my opinions could absolutely change. I still think Eklund could be a nice top-6 offensive facilitator in the NHL though

Don't get me wrong, I think he could be a top 6 player in the NHL.

I just think in his draft year the hype was more than it should have been for what he is.

I had him ranked 8th that year, behind Beniers and Guenther. 1 spot ahead of Sillinger.

If you look historically, he was 24th in U17 season point totals in SHL history. Thats good, but it's not elite. Certainly not at the level of the best Swedish prospect we've seen in a bit. Is he better than Dahlin who went 1OA? You'd think he's no worse than 3OA if he's better than Dahlin and possibly challenging for 1OA.

Carlsson wasn't a huge contributor last season. He was the 12th/13th forward on an average SHL team. Thats about what you'd expect of a late-birthday first round pick in the SHL. This season, he'll be asked to play a more regular role, he'll probably get consistent top 9 time and PP time, and we'll see how he does. He could have a very good season, but don't make things up. He didn't do anything out of the ordinary last season.
ÖHK has 0 (or near 0) history giving young players a chance until last season. What he did was more remarkable than stats are showing. And that doesn't cover what type of linemates he had to play with. The way he can drive the play is really good. If ÖHK were to somehow put him with someone like Bromé this year he'll show why he deserves his high ranking.

Stenberg is really good and I see potential top 6 role in NHL one day, but he's a step below Carlsson.

Will be in the lineup for Frölundas next preseason games:

Wasn't much doubt that he'd be first in line for a call up but nice to have it confirmed. Will have a good shot at getting plenty of SHL games.

He reminds me of Nick Backstrom and is my top Swede as of now heading into the 2023 Draft - glad he had his coming out party of sorts at the Hlinka.

Frolunda is a pretty good team. You gotta outplay the career pros over there to earn your spot on that team.

Outplaying them won't be enough. He's basically playing for free. Guys with bigger pay checks will always be ahead.

How has he looked Swedish fans? I’ve had difficulty seeing him play because of the time difference and confusion as to what Swedish league he is actually playing for (SHL, U18, U20).

I see a lot of people ranking him very high on their draft lists, so I will watch him play eventually. Does he look like a 1st round talent?

He’s been extremely disappointing in all my viewings this season.

You should have seen him at Hlinka.

With that being said, Dower-Nilsson is producing the way I thought Stenberg would do in the juniors this season. Too bad D-N is such a mediocre skater. Will be interesting to see how both look in the coming international tournament.

I didn’t like Stenberg at the Hlinka either.

Then he sure has a huuuuge hill to climb for you to ever like his game ;)

(he wasn't too noticeable in the two games vs. Canada, but then again.. I thought no Swedish forward really was able to stand out vs. that crazy Canadian team)

Is he trending towards being a 2nd rounder? Man I was high on this player after the Hlinka.

Yes.

I did not find him impressive at the Hlinka or during this season so far. Mediocre hockey sense, doesn't have an explosive stride. Still a decent prospect due to his compete level and scoring touch.

Loved Lundqvist's reaction.

Edit - he was a stride off from having a breakaway and the crowd was into it. Would've been fun given the goal earlier.

Decided to watch the game since it was against Carlsson's team and wanted to share my thoughts:

I thought Stenberg found more ways to create offensive chances than Carlsson but also made more mistakes than him overall. Stenberg is obviously a lot more raw and doesn't play as good in a pro system as Carlsson does and he is also quite weak and go pushed and boxed out quite often but he displayed good combativity and good tools. I thought his decision-making at the Hlinka was much better but with the SHL pace and with him only having 10 games of experience at that level, that is understandable. But he found a way to have significant ice-time for a young player playing for Frolunda at the SHL level (11 minutes is good on that team lol, Raymond used to get 3-4 minutes...), so that's good news for him. He's going to be an interesting project as a late first round pick, I'd think.

Carlsson was good too and has such good poise at that level and uses his body well and is decisive and precise with his passing, but only got 10 minutes of ice-time.

Both players played a decent defensive game too. They made the game fun to watch.
