C Otto Stenberg - Frölunda HC J18, J18 Region (2023, 25th, STL)

As great as he was at the U18s....

I want to know why he wasn't more impactful at the J20 level. Especially when you look at what Dower Nilsson did on the same team.
Well Stenberg looked decent in SHL. Dower Nilsson would not survive 1 shift in SHL

Yeah I just can't really remember a player that looked that good at the U18s but was under 1 PPG at the J20 level in Sweden in their draft year.

Kind of a unique situation with Stenberg. Not sure what to make of it.

Not Sweden, but talking only about the statistical profile, Toni Rajala comes to mind.

Is Phillip Danault a player comparable for Otto? Late 1st is where Danault also went, also not a big point producer but a very important glue guy that looks consistently good shift to shift.

Danault is very valuable because he's one of the best 3 or so checking forwards in the world. We're really not good at projecting prospects to be elite defensive forwards. We can usually tell when they'll be good at it but the collective track record at identifying the future elite guys is really bad. So I wouldn't bring up Danault, or Bergeron, or O'Reilly.

Yeah that’s why it’s fun to try to find those because they are truly rare and as important as a high end offensive player. There’s not too many that I can think of that are 25 and younger… I think the only guys that I can think of that could project to be that type of player are Cirelli and Berniers.

He was impactful. He had to rehab his knee at several levels.

The J20 is broken into three parts. He missed the start of the season (like 4-5 games) with an injury, maybe from the Hlinka or SHL preseason.

By the time he gets back to Frolunda J20, NDN and Edstrom are tearing it up, so he goes to another line. He has to shake off rust but plays as a wing with NDN and Edstrom for a few games and gets a ton of chances but doesnt score much. Then he plays with Wold and Kumlin, then with Ratkovic and others and starts to produce. This is up until early November, so a 12-15 game sample to start the season. He has dominant games but doesn’t score, but its a small sample.

Second half (Top-10/Playoffs) he was their best forward, which is why Frolunda's A-team promoted him over his teammates with more points and kept him. His SHL play was no better or worse than Lysell or Raymond, but he really never played all that much until late in the season.

It’s unfair to punish a prospect or assess his play as underwhelming when his injury is mobility related. So the best explanation for Stenberg’s strong play in the second half is that he got healthy. The player and upside are unchanged.

Thanks for adding some context to his season, I have only seen him play in international tournaments this year.

I'm going back and fourth between him and Nate Danielson for the Flames pick at 16th, but I could see Pittsburgh or Nashville picking either/both before 16th.

I'm curious about any additional input by people who've watched him play a lot, the scouting reports I read on him seem to vary person to person.

I think the variance comes from league vs. national team play. He was a huge standout both at the Hlinka and at the U18s. Easily the top Swedish forward and at times looked as good (albeit different) as Eklund at the same age. But in league play, he somehow wasn’t really able to show that. Personally, I still have him rated very highly. He may not be a top-line forward in the NHL but he brings everything you want in a forward. He has excellent speed, quick hands, good vision and a pro-level shot.

Do you see him as a center in nhl? He was great at u18 but looked to be mostly on wing.

Nate Danielson is the one you want there.

I've always liked Stenberg but he's a late 1st, early 2nd prospect.

My question is; what is Stenberg in the NHL?

He has a great release but not particularly creative, he plays with pace & effort but not overly physical. He looks fairly big on the ice but is only 5'11 185. He does skate well.

Is there more offensive upside here to be a top 6 player, or is he a 'jack of all trades, master of none' bottom 9 utility player?

Probably a good middle 6 guy with tenacity, speed and can play good defensively. Robby Fabbri-ish maybe? 40-50 point guy.

There's offense there to be a top 6 player, but I think he's just one of those classic Swedish forwards who plays up and down the top 9, center and wing and provides leadership, defensive value, and some scoring punch.

These types do get undervalued and you factor in some many other of the higher upside prospects with something much clearer to 'hang their hat on' for a trait, and I could see him dropping.
