Really excited to see how he does at the Memorial Cup. Brandon vs London is a must watch for me, its going to be amazing with the amount of high level NHL talent on the ice. London has Marner who was a high first rounder, plus projected first rounder in Max Jones, plus two guys projected to go top 10 Tkachuk, and Juolevi, a likely 2nd rounder and fringe 1st rounder in Cliff Pu, and a guy who would go in the first in a re-draft (Dvorak). Brandon has a projected 1OA in Patrick, a high end 1st rounder in Provorov, a projected 20/40 guy in Clauge, two top 40 guys in Quennville and Hawryluk.

Pardon?

Also worth mentioning Mete and parsons IMO

When was the last time the WHL playoff MVP went to a second year player and 17 year old forward?

Closest comparison with respect to this might be Tyler Johnson, but it looks like he was a 1st year player.

Good call, a 17 year old in his first season. Interesting that Johnson wasn't an elite scorer until his 4th season in the WHL, but showed nice increases every season, and then obviously ramped up in the NHL...

How much is Brandon expected to fall off next season with 19 yr olds moving on?

I'd think Patrick should be an early favourite for the league scoring title, no?

How did Brandon get Patrick? Shouldn't they have been picking last in the draft? Did a team really trade that pick to them???

A year after Sid got drafted Toews was drafted.

97 born McDavid
and now
98 born Patrick

A generation later, such similarities between both duo's and style of players whom both play like from what I read on this thread. Hopefully future Team Canada 2022 combo also lol.

Can't wait to watch him at memorial cup.

Interesting comparable, and I can definitely see where you're coming from. Sean Monahan is another two-way force who will likely suit up for Canada soon

They missed the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons the season before Patrick's draft. Also drafted Clague in the same draft (3rd and 6th overall if i remember correctly)

*goes from being an average first overall to a generational prospect.

They're losing so many core pieces after this year:

Provorov
Hawryluk
Erkamps
Quennville
Duke
Mcgauley
Papirny (might be back as an OA?)

Next year they're going to need Patrick, Mattheos, Kaspick, Coulter, and Clague to step up in a big way.

Scoring title will be difficult. He's losing Hawryluk and two core defensive pieces. This is a team that can get the puck up ice in a hurry largely due to Provorov, and Erkamps. Losing both is really going to hurt the transition game. On top of that, Patrick will definitely have a chance at the U-20 team. He's going to have to compete with Burke and Gardiner, Barzal (?), and a strong cast of 18 year olds in Benson, Dube, Howden, Stransky and more for the title.

Caught Brandon/Seattle game 5. Patrick was a beast below the dots. Practically carried a Seattle defender en route to scoring a goal off his own rebound.

Knee jerk thought was that he reminded me a bit of Ryan Johansen.

In the 2016 pre-season draft preview Duthie says last year had 2 generational talents and this year has another. He then asks Bob, who basically says Matthews challenged Eichel last year at points, is viewed as "as good" or better by some scouts but probably goes 3. He basically implies if you think Eichel is generational than Matthews is. I think the whole notion that anyone other than McDavid is generational is ridiculous. Guys like Eichel, Matthews, Tavares, Stamkos and Mackinnon would be viewed as strong number 1's in most classes and franchise centers, basically a prospect that usually comes around once every 2 to 3 years.

Nolan Patrick has the potential to be considered a number one of that quality, haven't seen enough of him to make a concrete judgement myself yet. But he has the look of a big all around center that every team craves. And usually if you end up at the top of the draft he's what you want.

Bob's also said as recently as the draft lottery that the consensus is that Matthews would have gone 3rd last year...I really doubt all of Matthews, Eichel, and McDavid are "generational" players...Eichel and Matthews, while talented, don't look particularly "generational". It's also difficult to reconcile the idea that all of Eichel, Matthews, Tavares, Stamkos, and Mackinnon are prospects that come around once every 2 to 3 years. If Patrick is also a number one of the quality of the others...does that also make him a prospect that comes around once every 2 to 3 years? How about Ekblad? Kane? Ovechkin? Crosby? Malkin? More drafts than not will have at least one franchise player in them. You will get some down years - although that's more a hindsight thing.

I agree that neither Eichel or Matthews is generational, I've said that all year and stand by it. They are high-end franchise centers that don't appear in every draft. The tier in the least 20 years basically consists of Lecavalier, Thornton, Malkin, Tavares, Eichel and Matthews, with possibly Stamkos and Mackinnon on the fringes of it. McDavid and Crosby are clearly a tier above. Some guys exceed expectations such as Toews, H. Sedin, and so on, but those guys are viewed as clear cut franchise centers. Patrick can possibly place himself in that tier, but we got another year. I'd say the list I placed breaks down into a once every 2 to 3 years, atleast in regards to high-end center prospects. 1999 and 2011 both had center's go one but were viewed as week drafts. 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2014 didn't have a center of that quality (at the time of the draft, there are always guys like Getz or Toews who exceed expectations). It has its ups and downs. I wouldn't call Matthews generational, but I would say he is the tier of high-end centers right below it with the group I listed.

Yeah, he looks that way.

We'll see about Patrick. I tried to watch him a bit more the second half of the year, including what I could in the playoffs. It's hard living in Toronto. Except for what's on sportsnet, I'm stuck looking for streams or buying online, and I don't have much time for that.

I have to say, now I've seen more of him, I've definitely warmed up to him more than before. He's a way more physical player than I thought he was...I mean that in a good way...he also has a bit more of a nasty side than I thought...again, I mean that as a compliment.

We'll see how he does next year. But in any event, watching him more the last few months, to the extent I could, I'm way more impressed with him than before, with more limited viewings (and to be fair, he's also a bit more experienced).

It will be nice to see him in the MC (although, hopefully he plays bad against London...ha ha fat chance). I'll make sure to watch more next season. And i'm pretty sure he'll be invited to the U20 camp this summer...IMO he's the best Canadian '98 player.

Has anyone heard what McCrimmon plans to do next year? I know Hunter wanted him to work for the Leafs last year and he decided to stay in Brandon b/c they were going to be competitive (there may have been a million other reasons as well).

I've watched a lot of Patrick, but I have never seen him control the game offensively (even as an underager). I still think he's going to be a great player, but I just don't buy the hype of him being equal or better in terms of offensive potential to a player like Matthews. I think what we're going to get with him is a 6'4" version of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins IMO (which isn't a negative comment by the way).

I think he plays a heavier game than RNH.

His foot speed didn't look great tonight, i didn't think.

Oh, absolutely, when I meant a 6'4" version of him, I was also meaning all the attributes that come with a body size that big. :)

Yeah, but I think Patrick's size and the accompanying physical attributes turn him into a different player. He's probably more like Getzlaf than RNH...although I think Getzlaf is 'meaner', if that makes any sense.
