Was at that game the other night. The way he completely took over the game was something to behold. He floated a 2 foot high saucer pass to Kale Clague for the 5th goal that was absolutely nuts. Kid has a nasty shot too. Played top minutes on PK and PP as a draft -1. Unreal. Can't say enough about how impressed I was with this kid. It would have to take an absolutely dreadful next season for him not to be first overall at this point.

Hoping Brandon makes Mem Cup so SportsNet can start the hype train. (And he'll get national coverage)

I think this kid will be the best 1st overall to come out of the WHL since Clark and Modano. Hopefully he just tears it up next season. he really just needs to get a good start. If he starts like he finished this season he shouldn't have any problems cementing 1st overall.

Liljegran should challenge him, but Patrick is the clear favourite. It surprises me a bit how few 1OA the WHL has had. Seems every time they look to have one, the player slightly slips (S. Reinhart, Bouwmeester, and Seth Jones). He looks to be the best forward prospect out of the WHL in a long time though. I mean his only challengers since Modano are RNH and Chris Phillips, who were both #1's in weak years. I don't follow the dub to closely, but I'd say Patrick is probably the best prospect out of there in awhile, with Seth Jones, RNH and Ryan Murray being his main competitors.

Yeah it's been a rough couple of years for the WHL in terms of the high end talent. It seems most of the better WHLers lately end up being late bloomers like Benn. Patrick could very well be the best player we ever have when all is said and done. Comparing him to virtually any other high end WHL players in their draft years I think I'd take Patrick every time without hesitation.

I might of taken Jones, but its close. And I can say, I'm pretty happy with the last 1st rounder the Leafs took out of the Dub. It does seem some of the guys who were really hyped up either didn't quite reach what people expected of them (Barzal, Tyler Benson) or just flat out fell apart (Alex Forsberg). S. Reinhart and Drai look good, B. Schenn finally put it all together this year (although as a do everything winger, compared to Mike Richards comparisons at his draft), and Ryan Johansen probably would of got more hype if he took a more conventional path.

Next year the WHL should be getting alot of attention, some very interesting prospects between Patrick, Kailer Yamamoto, Cal Foote and Rasmussen. I'd also say it feels like the WHL losses more kids to the NCAA route than any other region top guys like Jost, Fabbro, Turris, Toews, Heatley, and Kariya.

Yeah it seems to be the BCHL kids that end up going the NCAA route more often than not and with them being the largest population it happens more than it doesn't. Not entirely sure why they choose NCAA over WHL but they do it in spades. Could have something to do with the representation here telling them the NCAA route is better for them long term. Go get their 2 years there and then hit the NHL.

Where would he be drafted this season if he wasn't born a few days late?

I think he'd likely be right in the conversation with the big 3.

I remember playing midget AA for the St. James Canadians... This kid was just starting his first year of 11AA and absolutely ripping up the league to the tune of ~3PPG. Who would have guessed he would be a potential first overall pick.

So he's a "lock" to go #1 at this point?
Not really, but he's a heavy favourite, very comparable to the Sam Reinhart situation. He's a late birthday, and some 16 year olds will break out next year, plus Liljegren is wowing people by playing in the SHL at 16 and good performances at international events. We'll start to hear more about the other candidates at the Hilinka in August, its where you start to hear about the now 17 year old Canadians who are taking big step forwards. For example, how Bennett really started shooting up the rankings in 2013-14.

Not a lock for #1 but in that category for "high favourite". Hall, Reinhart, and Couturier were all ranked #1 (or tied for #1) heading into their draft seasons by TSN and were late Bdays producing at a clip similar to Patrick in the CHL.

They ended up being selected #1, #2, and #8 overall in their drafts, so I would go as far as to say I can almost guarantee he will be a top 10 pick at this stage.

Baring Crosby or McDavid, nobody is a "lock" to go 1st one year out.

next years draft is looking really weak. I hope this kid can make some teams excited about the draft next year. Him and Liljegren look amazing

After 174 games Patrick has scored 63 even strength goals
Reinhardt had 54 after 174, couturier had 51 afte 174, hall had 60 after 150, 77 after 200
After 200 games in the WHL, the highest ES goals scored in recent history for a player starting as a 16 year old rookie that I can find is shinkaruk at 65, then Schenn and Gabrielle at 64, so Patrick is already at those numbers with 26 games to spare
Patrick's goal scoring can't compare to the OHL snipers like hall, sequin and Tavares, but compared to other WHL'rs his scoring is unprecedented

Stamkos comparable?

I think of stamkos more like a Patrick Kane? I think Patrick projects out to be a bigger version of Toews. I'm not convinced he will go #1OA, he starts seasons slow, there will be a shinier toy out there that takes the spotlight. One knock on Patrick is that he hasn't stood out in international competition yet, but I guess his playoff performance so far with 24 points in 16 games is really good. Just voted player of the month for the WHL. He still needs to work on his speed and leg strength, but his shot and vision are already NHL caliber.
I would pick him first overall, but I value players like Toews more than most other people! People who value Kane more than Toews might be tempted to take yamamoto, or maybe a team like Edmonton really need a big defence man like the Swedish kid.....Would be nice if Wpg could find a way to draft the home town boy next year, then let him come back to Brandon for a fourth and final season to make a run along with clague, mattheos and kaspick!!

Toews is definitely the comparable I'd use for Patrick. The power, the scoring, the hands, the two-way ability. He has a very similar skill-set that Toews brings to the table. Now, whether he reaches Toews level remains to be seen but there must be something about that Winnipeg Warriors bantam team.

I agree with everything except his lack of speed and leg strength. for his size he is very fast and build like a rock from what I have witnessed in the games I have attended this regular season and playoffs. Hard to knock of the puck and just magically appears out of nowhere for great takeaways on the back check.

Working Friday but can't wait to see them play Seattle on Saturday. It should be a good series.

It would have been epic if he was a tad older and Winnipeg drafted him this upcoming draft.

Yeah guess I'm not saying he's slow, but he's not as fast as mcdavid etc.... I think his wrister is really underrated, he was giving toth nightmares with it, short side, far side, toth had no idea where he was hoping to place it. And his vision is crazy, how about that pass to clague for the 5th goal Friday night? He just isn't flashy, he's Toews 2.0!!!

How would you say his game differs from the other high-end big centers out of the WHL recently, such as RyJo and Getz. I haven't seen enough of him to make a firm comment, but his strength on the puck and ability to shield it to create shots and passing lanes reminds me of those 2. Granted, as noted Patrick seems to have a greater commitment to defence than RyJo has had most of his career.

I've seen this in multiple threads now, where a player's speed is compared or thought of as fast only if in McDavid range.

There will not be another McDavid for a decade or longer for all we know, can't compare anyone to him in any facet of the game lol.

As far as Even strength goals and total assists go in first 200 games, (I think RyJo) started in the dub as a 17 year old didn't he so that is a real advantage when you think about that compared to guys starting at 16
RyJo 200 games, 57 ES goals, 113 total assists
Getzlaff 200 games, 37 ES goals, 99 total assists
NP 174 games, 63 ES goals, 111 total assists

I always thought getzlaff was a lazy player in the dub, just turned it on when he wanted to. I'd say patrick is a better scorer, better vision, better work ethic, but not as mean or as much of a hitter
Never saw Ryan J much, so can't help you out there, sorry

Game 1 of the WHL Finals was played tonight. Sportsnet 360 aired the game with full Friday Night Hockey coverage.

What are your observations of Patrick?
