Disagree. Not even comparing playing styles and just looking at stats:

PLD: 82 points 55 GP 6th in league scoring
Patrick: 79 points 60 GP 5th in league scoring

Looks close? Sure, then you have to realize Patrick had a SLOW start and is one of the hottest players in the CHL right now. Then, you can't even compare the two's defensive games. Patrick was taking dying seconds d zone faceoffs last season at 16(on McCrimmon's team). The kid is one of the best defensive players in the CHL already. Please do NOT tell me they are on the same level. Because they are NOT.

Dubois is perhaps the best defensive forward in the Q in my opinion, so there's that... his game was built around smarts and defensive play prior to this year where he also took a massive offensive step. No doubt Patrick is a better player and I think he'd go 2nd overall in this draft.. just your comments about defensive game and Dubois make little to me sense to me honestly.

They are both big center who are dominant in the faceoff circles.. From what i've seen similar type of players. Dubois might have a meaner streak and Patrick more potential as he is a bit younger. As a poster said not so long ago, they are on the same level right now, just have to wait to see how both will adapt to the bigs.
The only way i could see someone try and compare the two would be if they are Dubois fans cause from what ive seen they arr totally different players and Patrick is way ahead.

If Patrick was in this draft he would be top 3 and right now making a statement to be a possible no 1. He is absoloutly dominante out there right now and than add on that he is most ljkely the best defensive forward in the entire CHL right now as a 17 is unreal..

I wouldn't say Dubois is dominant at the faceoff circle, someone like Beauvillier is dominant in faceoffs.

Dubois is a strong defensive player in his own right just fyi. It's fine if you think Patrick is on a different level but they aren't that far apart. I will note for you that I think Patrick is the better player also.

This exactly. Both can play defense, both are big, both are solid on faceoffs, both score lots and Patrick is only 2 months younger. I wish Patrick would play with the edge Dubois has though.

I think Patrick is the better two-way player and the better Center. He just reacts and reads so well. Though I may have a bias as I see Patrick play much more than I see Dubois play which is always on TV. Though I have been watching a lot of Dubois lately.
I think Patrick has the higher upside as a two-way shutdown center in the vein of Getzlaf whereas when I see Dubois play he reminds me of Jeff Carter. Both very good but I think Patrick has higher offensive upside. I expect both will be good NHLers though. If Patrick was in this draft my top 5 would be.

Matthews
Patrick
Laine
Puljujarvi
Dubois
Chychrun

They're both pretty well-rounded players, but Patrick seperates from Dubois in shooting. Patrick can really shoot the puck, I think he's got a better offensive side of the game overall. Dubois has an alright shot, he's a good decision-maker, and knows how to keep plays alive and fluid which is the probably the biggest thing that makes him very good offensively.

One thing that is going to be key and will prove to be key once they play in the NHL is maturity/strength. Patrick's legs look really small, he's a year younger than Dubois, but it looks like Dubois is really fit and has a lot of muscle on his body. He's a thick kid, while Patrick looks like he has twig legs, but his upper body is big. I think Patrick has a ton of room to grow and it happens where players look weak in their draft year, but a couple years later when they reach the NHL, they look so much faster, stronger, and quicker.

He's less than three months younger than Dubois.

Goal and assist tonight. Goals in 11 straight games. That's the 4th longest goal scoring streak in the whl in the last 20 years!!

Another goal tonight. That's goals in 12 straight games. This streak as a 17 year old in the WHL should be front page news, it's remarkable.....

if he was a year older would he go ahead of the finns?

Honestly for how good he is and is becoming offensivly plus add on the fact hes a centre with probably the best two way game ive ever seen. I think he would be turning some heads as to who would go #1 this year. This is just my opinion and i may have some bias yes. But its been a long time since ive seen a kid with all the tools he does.

Patrick's good, but I thinksome are overrating him. I don't think he's as good as Matthews or Laine who are putting up very good numbers in decent pro leagues. The difference between Patrick and Dubois isn't that big in my opinion. We are talking about less than a three month age difference, pretty similar CHL stats and similar defense.

Also, the players in the CHL that go #1 overall in the NHL Draft and have become top 10 centers in the NHL or will be like Crosby, Stamkos, Tavares, MacKinnon, McDavid were all better CHL scorers in the season before their draft year, and Crosby, Tavares and McDavid were significantly better. The only ones that weren't significantly better are Stamkos and MacKinnon.

Stamkos didn't put up huge numbers in the season before his draft season, but his numbers were still comfortably better than Patrick. MacKinnon didn't either, but we have to consider that MacKinnon was like two weeks from being able to be picked in the next draft while Patrick's a few days from being able to be picked in the previous draft, so there was a huge difference in age when they played their CHL season before the draft. Even still, MacKinnon's stats in his season before his draft year were slightly better than Patrick's despite being more than 11 months younger at the time of the season, and his draft season stats which are more in line with the age of Patrick's current season were significantly better than Patrick's this season.

Unless Patrick is projected to be someone in the mold of Toews or Kopitar in the NHL, which he very well might be, its highly unlikely that Patrick will be the type of offensive talent in the NHL that McDavid, Eichel, Matthews are, so to compare him to those types of players who project to be at least 90-100 point players in their prime, Patrick has to be an elite defensive player in the NHL, combined with at least 60-70 point talent.

Thats just my opinion. I've only watched a few games, but when I've watched him I don't see a dynamic offensive talent who can stand out as one of the top offensive talents in the NHL. His defense is very good, but I don't know for sure that he's a top 5-10 defensive center in the NHL, which he pretty much would need to be to match the level of the players he's going to get compared to and is being compared to in the last few pages as a likely #1 overall pick into the NHL from the CHL as a Canadian center.

Interesting post Pavel. Who in the last ten years from the WHL would you consider to be an elite scorer in the NHL?
The streak is over, shut down In the Hat, hope he starts another one!

I don't think it does WHL players justice to compare them to Q and OHL players. Different leagues with different styles of play. You will likely never see high end offensive guys like Crosby, MacKinnon, Tavares, Stamkos or McDavid come out of the WHL.
He's more comparable to a guy like Getzlaf and he's far outproducing Getz at the same age.
Getzlaf - 70 GP - 29 G - 39 A - 68 PTS
Patrick - 63 GP - 37 G - 45 A - 82 PTS

I like even strength goals comparison as an indicator how strong a player is
Getzlaffs first 150 WHL games he scored 23 even strength goals
Patrick's first 149 WHL games has scored 54 even strength goals

The WHL is lower scoring, but I think you'd find that most of those players that I've named and he will inevitably be compared to scored more in relation to their competition than Patrick does to his. Patrick's not even distancing himself from Yamamoto in terms of 2017 draft eligible WHL scorers in terms of PPG. Thats not to diminish him as a prospect since scoring isn't everything, but Patrick doesn't seem to be in the mold of some of these #1 overall picks like Crosby, McDavid, Stamkos, Tavaraes, MacKinnon when it comes to scoring. Maybe his offensive ceiling is comparable to that of RNH who was #1 overall out of the WHL?
