— Noah Ostlund has made his way to Rochester. Buffalo took the Swedish center No. 16 in the draft last season and he spent the year playing in Sweden’s second-tier pro league. He had 26 points in 37 games but also dealt with a foot injury. When the Sabres drafted Ostlund, he said his plan was to spend two seasons in Sweden before coming to North America. But the Sabres wanted him to come to Rochester and get a feel for how the organization runs things there while the Amerks are in the midst of a playoff run.

“We want him to see all of those things that have made this place special for our other young prospects and feel that energy. It’s one thing for Kevyn Adams or Jason Karmanos or Don Granato or myself to say that, but when you’re actually here and you’re living it and watching it, you’re feeling it. You get a different sense of what this place really is.”

Ostlund was already in the Amerks’ shooting room on Thursday with fellow Swede Linus Weissbach. The Amerks have leaned into the philosophy of winning with their prospects in recent years. Jack Quinn and JJ Peterka jumped into the AHL as teenagers, and Kulich and Rosen followed suit this season. Ostlund is 19 and the Sabres don’t need to rush his development. Plus, returning to Sweden isn’t a bad alternative if he lands a deal with an SHL club, Sweden’s top league.

Quick Google machine translation.

During the WC, Škoda donates 500 hockey kits from CCM Hockey, for more children on the ice. I got to decide where 25 of them should go.

The love for hockey was discovered for me already at the hockey school in Södertälje SK. I have so many wonderful and beautiful memories from that time. Södertälje SK has had a big impact on my development and still means a lot to me today.

That's why my 25 hockey kits go to Södertälje SK, so that more children like me get to try the world's funnest sport when the autumn hockey schools start!

I'd like him in Rochester, but wouldn't hate to give him SHL time either. He's going to be a core piece in the NHL some day, but let him season.

As long as he is in the SHL or AHL I don’t really care where he is. The Amerks path is showing very positive signs…but he will be in Rochester the year after anyway so it’s not like he will miss it. Plus…there are a LOT of young players already slated for Roch next year.

Appert said Sabres center prospect Noah Ostlund, 19, has returned home to finish rehabbing a foot injury that forced him to miss playoff games with his Swedish team, Djurgardens.

Ostlund, the 16th pick last year, joined the Amerks earlier in the postseason to practice and get a feel for the organization. He did not play any games.

“We wanted to bring him over here just to keep getting him acclimated to our organization, to how we operate, to seeing how playoff hockey in the American league felt like,” Appert said. “It was a great experience for him.”

Feels like Ostlund wont make the NHL until part way through the season after next if everything goes right. Very much a slow cook.

I feel like if they make a move that involves any 1st round valued pieces it will be him, or one of the 1st round picks this yr or next

I have absolutely nothing to base this on but I have a feeling the Sabres brass isn’t particularly happy about this choice.

I know what you mean. Not the end of the world, but I think they're confident in their Rochester program right now and prefer to have top prospects close to home and under their influence.

Although if he had come over, Rochester would have been scary young and the forwards crowded. Wonder if it would have pushed someone to Cincinnati.

I have no doubt they’d rather he had come over. But the truth is Rochester is going to have a LOT of young players already next season. And he will be there when his SHL season ends anyway. He signed his deal and will be in the fully in the fold by late April at the latest. It might set back his time table a bit here…but that doesn’t really have to be a negative either.

Why would that be a slow cook? 2 years in the SHL and a year or two in the AHL sounds like a right pace cook to me. I think the Sabres have been flash cooking prospects to fast for a few years now. I think it would be beneficial in the long run to slow things down a bit and do a more proper and complete development on these guys. JMHO

Almost 1 year has passed. How do people feel about this pick at #16? I know it surprised a bunch of people relative to where he was ranked.

I still love the upside. Perfect player to pair with Rosen on the third line someday. They will be a possession nightmare with their blend of speed and skill.

I don’t think that his pick was a reach at all. A decent amount of prospect posters online had him in the range we took him.

I'm even more pleased now, having watched him in club play with Djurgarden and away from Ohgren/Lekkerimaki. Playing harder minutes and playing through injuries, still getting results... I was quietly pleased. In how he fits in Buffalo, I'm not sure, but the player himself? I'm good with him and where he was selected.
