Kane is not a good comparable for Marner. The Giroux one is better for sure. He is more cerebral than Kane and less flashy in my opinion. Kane and Drouin are like freewheeling artists out there with their tantalizing speed and skill, Marner is more of a very smart and cerebral playmaker. It certainly helps Marner as well that he plays with Christian Dvorak who might be the smartest player in all of junior hockey. Excellent prospect.

This (and other posts that preceded it) are offering some great insight on this player. Much appreciated.

I'm curious about your description of Kane as freewheeling. I actually see him as being exceedingly cerebral once he hits the offensive blueline. He literally slows play down and has the uncanny ability to maintain significant time and space for himself (to navigate his options), seemingly while not moving at hyper-speed.

In that regard, he reminds me of, yes, Wayne Gretzky.

(No one for a nanosecond should misinterpret that as a comparison of the two players, just that one aspect.)

Anyway, if style wise Marner reminds observers of Giroux and Kane, that's alone makes him interesting. Seems like he plays hard in all three zones too (a la Giroux), which endears him to yours truly. ;)

My description was more to bring about the fact that Kane's skill is eye-popping. When you see him play now and saw him play in junior it was a sense of amazement that it is possible for somebody to possess this much skill. A sense of awe. I think the last prospect we saw that with was Drouin. You don't really get that with Marner, or Giroux, it's more like wow, this guy is a really great hockey player, a really smart hockey player with great playmaking ability, but the pure skill level isn't going to make you drop your jaw like those other guys. Marner kills a bit of penalties, he puts his stick in the way and body in the way subtly to get the puck back, to slow the play up to let his teammates get the puck back. He'll stick lift or lean on you very slightly to open up a foot of space, you don't really see Kane doing these things. He's just more cerebral but not as skilled. Marner has an excellent feel for the game and does little things within the game to always give himself a slight advantage out there. He's not the strongest, fastest or most skilled but he's quite above average in all those things for his size but he puts it all together in a nice package that will make him a good 2-way player with offense in the NHL in my opinion.

So would you have taken Crouse over Stamkos, Hall...?

Has there ever been a prospect put up Marner’s #’s and received as little recognition? The numbers suggest only Crosby or Kanes numbers have been better. Kane was a year older and his line mates were Gagne and Kostitsyn

Hes a DEADLY player but unfortunately his draft year fell on the same year as 2 kids that the hockey world has put through our heads over and over for years will forsurely go 1,2 in the draft. Obviously McDavid and Eichel will go 1,2 but I wouldn't be surprised if some scouts have Marner ahead of one of them

Not really a good measure because you took account of the total goals the teams scored that year rather than how many they scored while that player was playing.

Marner is having a very good season no doubt but I don't think one can conclude from this that he is on the same level has guys like Hall, Stamkos, and MacKinnon were at the same age.

The more I see this kid play, the more I feel he's going to be the real deal. Right now, I'd take him #3. He's got a ridiculous hockey sense.

Why is that?

Because points per game is not an accurate representation of players in junior, especially when a certain poster is entirely ignoring to account for the goals the teams scored while the players were not in the lineup.

Like I said, Marner is a great prospect but I don't think you'll find many people who disagree with me when I say he is not on Mackinnon/Stamkos/Hall level.

Pierre Marc-Bouchard had 140 points in his draft season, you should run his %.

How physical is he?

Obviously he's a very high end talent but he might be a few years away from the NHL just because of his weight.

Ehlers was a similar size/weight at the time he was drafted and it was apparent that he needed time to develop physically.

That being said, whoever gets to draft this guy will be very happy.

Nothing wrong with him needing a couple years to develop in London, then AHL before coming up. Learn from Edmonton's mistakes...

Well the stats listed were not just points per game. The advanced stats the CHL use also show Marner near the top of every category. But thank you for giving me one example in the last 15 years of someone with crazy numbers but still went 8th overall. But it looks more often than not most prospects that are dominant in junior go on to have pretty good careers as a top player in the NHL. You might be right he might be a bust. But statistically he has better odds the other way around.
