Picking a fight
To be honest, I don't think it becomes an issue unless it carries into November. I'm starting to expect him on the WJC squad and ending up back in Seattle.

For anyone who watched, were the penalties a resault of him compounding a mistake (or saving a goal) or stupid retalitories?

First penalty was a slash on OV as he tried to prevent him form getting a chance in the slot
Second was playing the puck while still standing in the box
Third was a trip as he went in for a puck battle along the boards

just end this cruel joke Garth... send him back to junior so he can actually play some hockey

I was really hoping the Isles would lose their last game. But they pulled it out. At this point, I think there is something wrong there when you see the youth around the league flourishing but the coach of this team not willing to trust his young players.

What, a competition between 19 year olds for one spot is a cruel joke? Jeez. I hate to sound like that guy (tm), but y'all need to toughen up.

This might be an attractive view if it weren't the fact that Matt Barzal is losing the battle to another young player that seems to be flourishing - Anthony Beauvillier.

Well both are averaging 4th line TOI right now at 9-10 mins. Not sure how a player is going to flourish under those conditions.

That number will rise, but - barring injuries - it won't go much above 11-12 minutes per night at least in terms of ES TOI. Given that reality, you take the more versatile player who will move up the lineup or take on new roles when there are injuries.

they wont.

Barzal needs to be sent back and will be soon. Its just a matter of time. He looked really good in preseason and most fans thought he was a shoe in, but it's obviously just not meant to be this year.

10 mins of ice time in 4 games

Kinda stupid to waive PAP in order to keep Barzal and Beau on the roster, and then to send them back to junior....

It was really more between PAP and Quine and Quine can play all three forward positions.

Are the isles gonna let him get in 9 games at least to see how he does? That way he can see what he needs to work on or what is successful

it will be WJC time by the time his 9 games are up seeing that Capuano keeps healthy scratching him.

Cap: Halak in net, Pulock for Leddy. Leddy day to day, unsure about Sunday for him. Same forwards as Tuesday. #Isles

Cap: Need to talk with GS about Barzal. Will try to get him in but feels centers are playing well so far. Strome back to C tonight w/72 & 10

If there is no deadline date, Capuano will try and play Barzal less than the 10 NHL games for the entire season. That way he can get practices and meetings galore and not waste his ELC. He'll be getting an paycheck all season for his troubles. They did it last year with Berube where he never played, had a phantom injury, lost a complete year of development. It's Capuano's way, he's a genius that way!

(if it's not apparent, there is heavy sarcasm in this post)

At this point, I think the Isles are going to use the Pietrangelo Plan for him. Hard to explain the scratches otherwise.

He'll get to 9 NHL games by early December, then he'll be off to the WJC camp and once that is over, he will be sent back to Seattle to end the season.

haha oh man that would be the worst thing ever if they did that. Terrible mishandling if they did. He's got the taste of NHL and lifestyle/preparation... just let him go back to junior now and allow him to actually play hockey.

Capuano even said himself he likes how his centers are playing and doesn't know how he will get Barzal in lineup. And I imagine if NYI wins tonight with this lineup, Barzal will be scratched again next game.

This is so painful to watch

Pretty much a joke that they are keeping Barzal as a practice player. Play him or send him to junior. Development is an actual thing for young hockey players, and it doesn't happen by watching games from suites and awkwardly participating in practices when you clearly aren't a real member of the team.

This whole situation is why these players should be allowed to go to the AHL. It's pointless for Barzal to go score 120 pts again in the WHL. It is also pointless to be sitting in the press box as well.

He needs to learn to play a pro game against men. Not dominate against boys.

Again? He didn't score 120 last season...nor was he on pace for that result.

Barzal had a strong season in the WHL, however he was not so dominant that he's outgrown the league. If he is back in the WHL there are things he can work on. If he can play in the NHL, then he should stay there - if he can't (and judging by the frequency that he's scratched, it looks that way) then send him back to the WHL. It's not like NYI has an impressive history of developing players - so i'm not sure what the benefit of him staying up there is - except for him personally making $$$.

Maybe he should be loaned to Europe. Obviously he can't just rot in the press box and if he has nothing to learn in the juniors, playing against professionals in Europe might be the next best step. Matthews showed that it is a viable option for young NA talent.
