I think between the injuries and trade rumors there's been too much negativity between both player and organization. I wouldn't be surprised if both sides are ready to move on soon, perhaps next summer.

That said, Zegras has looked pretty good back at center in the two games I watched this week.

Maybe the extra talent has taken away from some of his opportunities? He's no longer numero uno on depth chart.

18 points his last 45 games. only 7 goals in that span.

from 2020-2023… his PPG was 0.77 PPG.

since then he is playing at a 0.40 PPG.

a huge dip in productivity.

it’s bizarre because looking at his average TOI, this season he’s averaging 17 minutes a game which is his average across his career so it’s not like he isn’t playing as much.

this tweet picked up steam today so i’ll ask this posters question here:

is trevor zegras just completely washed by age 23?

what’s going on with him?

Zegras’ 23-24 season:

12 GP 1G 1A 2 pts (10/14 - 11/7)

Shut down with a groin muscle injury, misses 20 games.

8 GP 3G 2A 5 pts (12/23 - 1/9)

Breaks ankle, misses 31 games.

11 GP 2G 6A 8 pts (3/26 - 4/18)

So I don’t see how his 23-24 season tells us much of anything, particularly since he had a messed up groin in those 12 first games.

More on the groin injury in a April 2024 Athletic article:
But it was the muscle injury at the beginning that threw his season off the rails. Zegras said the lower-body issue that originally forced him out for six weeks across November and December was osteitis pubis, which the Cleveland Clinic states is inflammation of the joint between the left and right pubic bones that can cause groin and abdominal pain. San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture had a severe case of it that rendered him inactive for all but six games this season.

It could be one reason why the offense and point production that Zegras normally gives the Ducks was virtually nonexistent before he was shut down. He had one goal and one assist in 12 games. The push by first-year head coach Greg Cronin to improve his defensive game played a role in suppressing his offense, but his absence made it apparent that he wasn’t at full strength.

“That’s a bit of a grind to go through,” Zegras said. “For hockey players, your groins are obviously very important. And I don’t want to say breaking my ankle was a blessing in disguise, but it gave me time to fully recover on the groin front. I’d say now it’s probably the closest I’ve felt to 100 percent. I’d say it’s a pretty good feeling.

And lots of Duck players are underperforming in 24-25.

For a washed guy, people sure love to make threads on mainboard and trade boards for him

He’s looked solid at center the last few games, the raw points havnt come…. But he has created chances, and playing well defensively in all 3 zones.

As a ducks fan I think he just seems to be lacking confidence, he doesn’t have that same swagger he had the first 2 seasons… I’m sure part of that is the injury issues, and I’m sure the coaching isn’t doing him any favors.

I mean, his play so far has warranted lots of complaints.. so what’s your point?
I imagine you havnt really watched him this year…. Only thing not clickin right now is raw points but he’s improved on the aspects people complained about his first 2 seasons… now it’s just a matter of putting it all together.

He’s 23, people need to learn to be patient….. I get people are still upset that zegras was on a game cover, and that some online lip readers made up a story that shot his reputation, but it’s time to let it go

Which player on the ducks is performing well? There's nobody on this roster putting up a respectable stat line. It's a poorly constructed roster with an average AHL coach leading the team.
Mctavish had been worse and more worrisome than zegras and it’s not even close tbh, but he’s gotten a few extra raw stats from empty netter/end of game points…. So these fans making the threads prob think he’s doing alright…. Obviously they don’t watch

Sure it might come down to injuries but frankly I was pissed that the ducks took him a 9 and we got Podz and I really like Podz on draft day but I thought Zegras was going to be a star and that looks extremely unlikely now.

Idk what fan you are, again it’s a lazy take and a lazy post…. That’s already been made a few times this year.

He had a solid game vs blue jackets last night, and he’s had solid games since going back to center.

People will say there is more to hockey than points when zegras is scoring…. Well now zegras has worked on the rest of his game and now the points matter.

There needs to be balance obviously but that also requires patience… he’s showed he can score, now he’s showing he can change his game up a bit to be better In all 3 zones. Let’s give him some time to adjust before we make the same thread 7 times a month.

Zegras is a playmaker... since moving back to C, his most common linemates are Gauthier (0 goals rookie who has probably hit more posts than any Ducks rookie and it's only 14 games) and Killorn (who looks washed up so far). He is creating chances, but no one can finish. Granted his scoring is down too, he is just gripping the stick too tight because no one can score or something... maybe it's confidence. Who knows.

That said, his defense and back checking is significantly improved from a couple years ago. He may (probably) never be considered good, but if he can be average and put up 60+ points he'll be a good 2C. But he's not going to be a 1 man show, he needs competent linemates and this year, the only other guys that look like top 6 forwards so far are Carlsson (another C) and Terry (plays best with guys that don't need the puck on their stick).

He's getting his talent coached out of him.

He's an artist-type player and these don't do very well with following strict, conservative systems.

You either take the bad with the good, or you will get only the bad.

His struggles all started after the last contract negotiation which by all accounts was contentious. I wonder if it is hurt feelings from those negotiations and he feels over the ducks management.

When he came into the league, he was a rookie or 2nd year player so nobody really cared that he didn’t play any D as it was assumed he’d figure it out.

Now that he’s expected to play both ends of the ice, his scoring has dropped. I’m sure it will rebound some because he’s dealt with a lot of injury lately but he’s not going to be a 90 point player like expected before I don’t think.

That being said, he’s looked much better defensively than previously and everybody else on the ducks looked terrible too. It’s hard for a playmaking centre to score with guys like the ghost of Alex Kilorn or a rookie with 0 goals this season.

He reeks of a player who needs a fresh start. There’s apparent issues with management and he would surely rebound playing somewhere with some talent who wants him there. We will see what unfolds. Nashville is desperate for centre depth. I wonder if they could try to buy low and gain a 2C. They have the pieces to make a deal.

That's funny I get 4 pages for this forum alone, most recent:

In the trade forum there should be way more.

Classic case of bad team scorer, he had 1st line minutes before but now he's been surpassed by more talented teammates (Carlsson, et cetera) and his dipsy dangle stuff isn't that relevant in a broader hockey context.
