C Mason McTavish - Peterborough Petes, OHL (2021, 3rd, ANA)

Can anybody explain his expontential rise in the draft? It's a player I haven't even heard about 2 weeks ago where people are fangirling about. If he's the next Wilson I can understand the hype but it just seems so sudden.
He’s probably the best draft-eligible OHL player and he didn’t play a single second this past season. It’s gonna be all over the place.

he was playing against men over against men in a tier 1 league similar to what Austin matthews did. Mason put up 11 points in 13 games. Not bad for a 17 years old.

Matthews played in NLA which is tier 1 league, McTavish played in Swiss League which is a tier 2 league, the difference in level of play in those two leagues is pretty noticeable.

Both did play against men in Switzerland tho

Much better hands, much better shot, plays the slot much better. He's also more versatile. Has played in all situations, positions and different styles this season. And he hardly took a shift off.

you forgot that he's Canadian, that's why he's better more than any of the above

This year’s Sanderson in that respect. I don’t buy this rise. I usually don’t buy it when this happens so late in the draft process for some players.

Same as any other year, he’s a top end prospect that was undervalued throughout the year and is now moving up based on more viewings and improved play. They are usually taken higher than internet scouts think they should, and usually more than live up to their draft pick.

Also, his style of play projects well to the NHL.

Big bodied, likes to shoot and protect the puck, can score in any possible ways.

Not flashy nor spectacular but efficient.

He's similar to Brady Tkachuk in his style of play.

Again, not at all similar to Tkachuk. Almost the exact opposite actually. You may be confusing him with Othmann. Othmann is the one similar to Tkachuk.

He played one step below what Matthews played, although Matthews was a year older -- 18 -- even though it was the draft year for both. McTavish also had seven points in four playoff games to finish on a tear after his slow start.

Not to bash Matthews but he played on a very loaded Lions team...one of the best in recent history for sure. Many of them had NHL experience already or went on to play NHL. Though they they failed the win the title they finished regular season in 1st place. Pius Suter, who was also part of that team, actually had identical numbers in both leagues when playing in Switzerland this season. Small sample size of course with just 6 games each but he asked to play NL because he was sick of everyone trying to shut him down.

Olten, McTavish's team, is a good one on paper but played a bad regular season for their own standarts, finishing just 5th. They also went through major slumps while McTavish was with them. McTavish played most games with the imports, so good linemates but even those two had cold streaks. They weren't always as sharp as later in the playoffs. McTavish also had the same problem as Suter...against his line, as against any good import line in the SL, nobody is gonna try to make plays...they're all trying not to get scored on.

I'm not gonna claim that McTavish is better than Matthews at the time...I'm just saying that it's a bit more complicated than many may think when seeing that one played NL and the other "just" SL.

If you havent heard of him you dont follow the draft/prospects that closely. He was ranked in the top 10 on Bob Mackenzies preseason ranking ahead of guys like Luke Hughes, Wallstedt and Lysell. His midseason one he had fallen to 11, but after that he had an all around dominant u18 tourney and an extremely strong playoff in the Swiss league he was playing in (7 points in 4 games). Now I doubt he goes as high as some people in here seem to think, but hes definitely a candidate for going off the board somewhere around 5th overall.

Not hearing about him is more on you than him having an exponential rise, he actually hasnt risen that much really

Even so, he did seem to suddenly rise in the standings.
So if you aren't exactly a draft nerd, and you didn't start paying attention to draft until midway through the season, you might wonder where McTavish came from.

Personally, I never spent much time looking at him because he was always ranked in what I call a "dead zone" - that 10-20 range that didn't seem plausible for a Wings pick.
But suddenly, he's forcing his way up some of these lists.

Centers often rise and keep rising right up through draft day.
Is he really a center?

Ok, he might not be the exact clone, but just like Brady Tkachuk he's big, he's powerful and he's effective while not being overly flashy or esthetically talented.

He's similar to Tkachuk in that sense.

He protects the puck, power his way through, and score goals in all possible ways: trash goals around the net, one timer, precise wrist shot, slap shot.
He has a toolbox full in terms of shooting abilities.
