C Mason McTavish - Peterborough Petes, OHL (2021, 3rd, ANA)

I think McTavish may be the biggest wild card in the 10-12 in this draft. I could see him going anywhere from 3 onward.

I think he's gonna be better on the wing in the NHL.

Looks a lot like Gabriel Landeskog to me who, despite being a wing, takes a fair amount of draws in Colorado.

McTavish is supposedly a future captain as well....

That might be his best case scenario. I was a huge fan of Landeskog in his draft year. I’d love for Detroit to get a guy like that.

Not sure I agree. I dont see the Offense of those guys there. He has a decent shot but he is not an elite offense guy.

Strongly disagree. McTavish is a very complete prospect, with his biggest weakness being his skating, which is just average. He is more polished than both Horvat and O'Reilly were in their draft years.

I think he has a nice ceiling with a high floor as well. If everything goes perfect, he's a more physical Ryan O'Reilly with a better shot. If he flops, I still see a heavy middle 6 player that is built for the playoffs.

Big fan of this player.

He's not related to Craig. They spell their name differently. Craig's last name is spelled MacTavish, Mason is McTavish.

He's talking about Mason's father Dale who btw also played for the Peterborough Petes. Mason also had a B-licence to play for Swiss Champion EV Zug this season which is another club his father used to play for. Mason decided to play the WJC18 though so he never got to play for Zug.

To be fair, at the time of the draft nobody really saw Horvat becoming a 65 point player of ROR close an 80 point player in his prime

I think he’ll be a serious consideration for the jackets at 5. They can afford to wait on him with the rebuild coming in.

I was really hoping the Flames would have a chance to draft him at #12 a month ago, now I don’t see him getting out of the top 5.

He’s the perfect fit for Detroit. I don’t see them passing on him if he’s still available.

Hard to really guess what Detroit will do but I would think they would take a long, hard look at him. They need shooters and could use some physicality. Yzerman is big on drafting "competitive" players with a high motor and Mctavish checks all those boxes. They could also use a high end center prospect

He also loves big, good skating dmen though and there is a few of those at the top of this draft. Pairing someone like Hughes or Edvinsson with Seider in the future would be a pretty enticing combination when they next make the playoffs
