C Mason McTavish - Peterborough Petes, OHL (2021, 3rd, ANA)

In the one game I watched of McTavish in the Swiss league, I only thing I didn't like was that his first steps were not mean (very slow actually). But the rest of his skating is decent, his skating routes were very good, and his offensive game was also good.

That's my one-game analysis. No mean first step.

I’m inclined to agree with your overarching sentiment. Beniers, a guy who some people have in their top-3, is more of a ~10 OA pick for me. I like McTavish, but I’d prefer to take him around 20 than 10.
Are you saying McTavish should be ranked around 20? Or that you would prefer to take a top-10 ranked player at 20? If the latter, who wouldn't love to have that kind of luck?

I see Max Comtois here.
Definitely some similarities in the heavy game game they play, but Comtois is a winger (and was in junior, too) while McTavish is a centre and could stick there in the NHL, I think. Max still can't shoot as well as McTavish does, despite having four years of development over McTavish. Max doesn't have a weak shot, it does the job, but he rarely beats a goalie from distance and that's a carryover from his play in junior. He scores almost all of his goals from the home-plate area and most from just outside the crease. McTavish can pick a corner or overpower a goalie from out past the dots.

Max Comtois is a pretty decent player. He might be even more decent if the ducks were a good team. And for what it's worth, Comtois was compared to Ryan Smyth in one article during his draft year.

I've made the Brady Tkachuk comparison in the past in terms of play style and impact. They both live around the net and are really strong in the corner. While I don't see Mason as being as mean as Tkachuk, he's still going to be a pain to play against.

McTavish isn't nearly as mean, tough or strong in the corner as Tkachuk but does have a better shot and better hands. He's also capable of playing Center.

He’s the perfect fit for Detroit. I don’t see them passing on him if he’s still available.

It seems like Steve Yzerman loves European prospects:

They selected Seider at 6th overall in 2019 and Raymond 4th overall in 2020. I assume that Steve continues drafting a prospect from Europe in this years draft with Edvinsson.

Listened to multiple podcasts this weekend and heard multiple draft experts compare Mctavish to Bo Horvat.

-stylistically, Horvat was an OX for London and dominated below the circle. Horvat also had skating concerns coming out of Junior.

- much like Mctavish, Horvat also catapulted towards the top 10-15 after starting the season as low as a projected 2nd/3rd rounder for his draft.

- similar leadership qualities as well

I assume CBJ will take the best center available at 5. If Matt Beniers is on the board at 5 they will take him, otherwise Mc Tavish.

You never know who CBJ has on their Centres list.

I wouldnt even be shocked if they had Svechkov ahead of Mctavish.

Svechkov looks like he has Selke Potential in him while bringing in some offence.

Completely different playing styles though and McTavish is more versatile as well. I don't think you want to see Horvat on the wing.

Is he actually better than matty beniers as a pure center? cannot understand why he's ranked 2nd on the US list for prospects and beniers fell to 6th

Pretty sure Button compared Beniers to Horvat too, so lots of Bo Horvats to go around this year.

Could you expand on what makes him better?

Much better hands, much better shot, plays the slot much better. He's also more versatile. Has played in all situations, positions and different styles this season. And he hardly took a shift off.

so basically hes a better version of him is what you're telling me?

Can anybody explain his expontential rise in the draft? It's a player I haven't even heard about 2 weeks ago where people are fangirling about. If he's the next Wilson I can understand the hype but it just seems so sudden.

I think Central Scouting was a bit too optimistic. Don't see him go before Clarke or Hughes. Having said that, McKenzie had McTavish at 9 on hid initial list so if he ends up going fifth that would be a nice but not a crazy rise. Certainly one justified by his strong play in Switzerland and at the WJC18.

If you havent heard of him you dont follow the draft/prospects that closely. He was ranked in the top 10 on Bob Mackenzies preseason ranking ahead of guys like Luke Hughes, Wallstedt and Lysell. His midseason one he had fallen to 11, but after that he had an all around dominant u18 tourney and an extremely strong playoff in the Swiss league he was playing in (7 points in 4 games). Now I doubt he goes as high as some people in here seem to think, but hes definitely a candidate for going off the board somewhere around 5th overall.

Not hearing about him is more on you than him having an exponential rise, he actually hasnt risen that much really
