C Mason McTavish - Peterborough Petes, OHL (2021, 3rd, ANA)

The only full games I have watched of McTavish (other than a bit in the NHL when he was figuring it out) were two WJC games this year but I was blown away. Looked like prime Todd Bertuzzi.

I think the Ducks really have something here. With Zegras and Mctavish to go with Drysdale and Gibson (still youngish) there is a lot to like.

This is high praise, I remember that WCE era line very well and pretty much every team in the league was looking for a player like Bertuzzi at the time.

It's interesting because if we had a normal year last year I wonder what the perception of him would have been pre draft, when Anaheim picked him the general vibe I got was "solid but not a high ceiling pick" but I reference the McKenzie rankings alot, the scouts who got to see him saw something that maybe more would have seen if he had a normal junior season.

Looking forward to seeing how he and some of these other prospects perform at the Olympics though

It's funny because even like a month before the draft he was seen as one of the guys who might fall to the Canucks at 9th (before we traded the pick in the OEL/Garland deal) and based on his scouting report, he was someone I didn't want.

In retrospect, he is such a unique weapon to deploy. Huge, mean, and poised with the puck with a heavy wrist shot.

I always worry about big guys that dominate juniors because of size because they'll lose that advantage when they get to the NHL (usually). He played well in a league against adults, which made me feel better, then didn't look terrible in the NHL (needs time, but he's 18). I'm hoping I can find somewhere to watch the Olympics games this year.

Well remember Madden said he was the best player in the AHL when he was there. Cod that be some hyperbole? Yes but I think he point was he was ready to play vs men

Now that's a great comparison (Bertuzzi).

I don't think he has the same 'nastiness' as Bert, but he brings such a different element to the Ducks that they need. I thought Comtois and Jones would've been it for us but they haven't developed into that 'power forward with offensive instincts'.

Oh, I was talking pre draft. He played against men last year as opposed to kids like he normally would have in the OHL. He's an NHL player now, though he can develop into a lot better than what he is now.

First game back from Olympics, scores 30 seconds in lol

Now has 13 goals in 11 games at the junior level.

His shot form and shot power on snapshots reminds me of Drai

Here's an example this is from months ago when he was in the AHL.

and another....

First off I don't recall anyone saying he was the best player in the AHL. I remember hearing ''he was good''.

As for the bolded part, that's the problem. Because of his stature he is technically ready to play with men. But that's it, I don't see how he can improve with that. He can play those bottom 6 minutes and look somewhat adequate and ''just be there'' – not threatening offensively, not physically intimidating, he would be ''just there, ready to play''. WHich is what we saw with his stint in the NHL and Olympics (where arguably, he looked rather bad than good).

I am a strong supporter of him staying in the juniors and hoping he takes the next step in dictating play offensively.
