Has anyone here actually ever seen Jankowski play? I find it very hard to believe that more than a few people (not including scouts) on these boards have ever seen him actually play a game.

How can people honestly justify liking or disliking this pick?

There are a few that got to see him play with Sven and John at flames development camp but it's rare to catch high school league games.

Florida was going to pick him at 23 if the Flames didn't. New Jersey also tried to trade with Calgary so they could draft Jankowski. He wasn't a huge reach at 21.

I know, which is why I don't understand why some people are calling this pick genius while others are hating on it. Nobody here has any idea of what this kid will turn into!

This is not a pick to be attacked/defended right now. Nobody here has seen enough of him to really understand whether or not he's worth a first round selection. He's a project pick that Calgary and apparently a few other teams picking in the 20-30 range think will develop into a top 6 NHL player.

Let the kid play two years of NCAA and we'll have a better idea of what Calgary has in him. Nobody knows what the Flames have in Jankowski so quit the bickering and follow his development if it interests you. This thread has become a ****show of non-sense based on scouting reports a handful of viewings, if that. Since he's a project, let him develop and discuss this after a couple of seasons in NCAA.

Simply search "Stanstead" under on-demand and choose "( MPHL ) Stanstead Coll. Spartans".

I saw him at the development camp and he was the best player not named Baertschi or Gaudreau.

There are many players who could dominate Canadian high school/prep-school hockey, especially at 17/18 years old. He needs to play at a consistent basis against top competition in order to get a proper read on him.

Who cares what Feaster says? He's standing behind his player and is saying what he believes. Clearly he sees something in this player that makes him think that he'll be a top player in the league one day if he develops correctly. Disliking a player/prospect because of a comment made about him is just ridiculous and stupid.

It's not idiotic to think that he could be a top player from this draft one day. I bet if you'd said that Getzlaf, Perry and Parise would be arguably top 5 players from the extremely deep 2003 draft that people would have laughed you off these boards and they were all picked in the mid-late first round. Or if you want an example of someone later in the draft you could say Shea Weber, who was picked 49 overall who developed into likely the best player in the draft. Yes, no GM touted these guys as the 'best player in the draft', but they developed into that range over the years.

Only time will tell if he ends up becoming a good player or not. He definitely could be one day though.

So maybe dislike feaster? watch interviews with the kid. he's well spoken and very grateful. hard to dislike a 17 year old kid who's so modest and classy. this is the problem with people on this board.

Probably should have said "Nah, the player we wanted was already picked, so we just randomly picked Jankowski" to appease the HF cynics.

Though, of course, HF would have found error either way.

This is pretty much it. Fans on here are pretty stupid though. How can anyone hate someone for a statement made by one person about another? If I said "well, Ashasx may have the most posts of anyone from his year joined HF in the next 10 years" would everyone hate you as well?

I agree completely. Jankowksi certainly wasn't a "sexy" pick, and after we had been entertained by Sven the year before, I know a lot of people were hoping, or expecting, that we pick a player a little closer to his ceiling.

But I understand that no draft is perfect. This draft having been a little lighter in talent compared to last year's allows me to understand why they picked Jankowski. There were no Baertschi's in this draft for the Flames, so they went full on potential.

I don't love it, nor do I have it. I understand it. But I do like that we're picking players with upside instead of safe picks who top out as 3rd liners.

I actually hope for a trade down. Somewhere in the 18-25 range so we can grab a guy like Mark Jankowski and pick up another pick. It sounds as though he is super raw but has as much upside as anyone in the draft. It would be a super risky pick, but its what we need.

Of course I only said this not knowing Teravainen was gonna slip to us haha. I was probably one of the few Flames fans that was happy with the pick from Day 1. It took a some time and some exposure to have the rest come around. Jankowski looks like a very modest and humble kid, and I can tell you he is very talented. He is an absolute bean pole however and desperately needs to bulk up. The College route will be perfect for that as its shorter schedule will allow for more gym time, and less weight loss due to hockey.

Why'd you even bother asking if anyone has seen him play if you're just going to discredit his accomplishments because of where he plays?

He still stood out against better competition during things like the Beantown Classic, which is filled with prep players that play against higher competition.
He didn't play the majority of the year against top competition, but his skills were evident regardless of the competition.
He was the top prep player in either country and was taken where the top HS/prep kid each year usually goes: the back half of the first round.

I don't understand why it had to be one or the other. There are many different ways to show you have confidence in a player.

All Feaster did was set the poor kid up to be a punch line.

But I digress. Janko might have alot of potential and well have to wait and see.

I just laugh at the pick because the Flames are in a win now mode with all of their players aging.

They have a 2-3 gap (closing fast) to be succesful and there were a couple of picks on the board that would have been smarter. They needed a prospect with #1 center potential to play with Iggy.

To me they had 2 choices to make that could have made them very good.

1. TT- smallish center prospect who fell in the draft. About 2 years away from NHL but still boatloads of potential

2. Trade up for Grigs. Definition of what the Flames needed. As per the boards flames fan are content with boom/bust picks (as the are with Jank) Grigs was pegged as a #2 pick most of the year and magically fell (attitude issues I dunno). He could have potentially stepped into the NHL this year and center Iggy while Iggy is still in his prime.

Now they picked Janko, a 4-5 year project. If he ever reaches potential he will enter the NHL when the flames are at their lowest. Iggy will be gone/ not playing at his highest level. Kipper is in the same position. So Jank will only be able to help them get from 29th to 26th place. And his best years will be for nothing

If Feaster wises up, realizes the playoffs are probaly not attainable, and trades Iggy, Kipper and Bouw for prospects/ young roster players then Janko will enter the NHL with a bounty of young players around him.

TL;DR Janko might have alot of potential but not a good fit for the Flames and their win now attitude

Dont really know how you gauge highest ceiling after playing in a high school league. Kyle Turris was supposed to be a phenom after playing in a lower league like the BCHL.

Janko might be a very good player but pump the breaks a bit with all these proclamations of fame
