Wanted to take a second to congratulate the Flames on having the balls to choose the guy they wanted. I lurked this thread over the past month or so and I became enamored with Janks, all the mock drafts seemed to have had him going somewhere between 15 and 25 once Button's rankings came out so I didn't think the Yotes would have a chance.

When he was there at 20 I started to get excited, when Calgary took him I was inconsolable. Then I got on twitter and saw everyone bashing the pick and I felt like I was taking crazy pills.

I think this kid is going to be pretty awesome. I don't care for the Flames, but I'll be keeping track of them to see how Janks turns out.

Best of luck guys!

Love the pick

No he's not.

Spending one season as the GM of the Magic shadows a lifetime of work dedicated to hockey?

He was not only a player himself, but served as a head scout in NJ, a GM in Albany, A gm in Orlando (IHL), a pro scout in Dallas, and the director of pro and collegiate scouting in Boston.

He has over 25+ years of hockey experience. Basketball guy..yeah....not so much.

Goddammit. Dont let facts stand in the way of a good troll. This is HFBoards for godsakes.

My opinion the Flames should have taken Tervainen (Sorry if the spelling is incorrect) or Maatta. Maatta and Tervainen are both proven players, who can help the flames a lot sooner than Jankowski can. However, with respect to Feaster and Jankowski, let's wait a while and see how the kid blooms, he like every other player in every other draft, could be the next Gretzky or Crosby. I'll give him a chance to prove himself. Where would the world be if the human race hadn't? Just a quick last note, another player not expected to do much of anything in his career: Miikka Kiprusoff, 5th Round pick 1995, boy were they wrong...

I actually like the pick.

Agree with you on going going for the home run pick. Most of the forwards taken in the first round seem to have pretty limited upside.

The only issue I had with what Calgary did was that there was a IMO better 'home run' choice with Teravainen dropping.

I guess there are a few teams crazy then? How many passed on Teravainen and went with players rated below him? There must have been plenty of warts on this TT kid to have him drop like a rock and only picked by a team who had two first rounders? Maybe this Teravainen kid isn't as cracked up as you think he is?

I am extremely critical of the Flames and think they have made plenty of bad decisions in the past three years, but this pick is not a bad move. I love this move. I've been following this kid for a while and quietly was hoping he would be the Flames pick. When they traded down I figured he was on radar, whether it would be a first round pick or in the second I hoped he would be there. With some players dropping it clouded the issue, and I was disappointed for a moment that another player was not selected, but that disappointment evaporated the second Jankowski's name was announced. The Flames actually took a player with potential, big potential, to be that number one center and be the steal of the draft! Very good pick and very happy for the team.

The draft is about potential and finding the players withthe biggest potential. It's easy to pick 1st overall and take the consensus player, knowing he's probably going to be a pretty good player. But there is no guarantee you get that best player in the draft at number one, especially in a draft like this one where there is no obvious generational talent. The number one pick may be a good one, or he may be Alexandre Daigle. Heck, he may turn into Doug Wickenheiser. I guess I should remind people that in that Wickenheiser draft everyone was pissed that the Canadiens passed on Denis Savard, but what about the guys that were likely the best players to come put of that draft? What about Jari Kurri (69) or Bernie Nichols (74)? You never know who is going to end up being the best player in the draft. Just because a kid plays as a 18 year old doesn't make him the best player in the draft. It just usually means the team that drafted him is pretty bad and needs all the help it can get by bringing in a player probably not yet ready for the grind of professional sports. Give this draft a few years before calling a pick great or poor. The only judge here that will count is time itself.

the guy could be a good one, I have never seen him play myself but playing such a far way off of great competition for his age has to make one wonder what he could be like against better systems, bigger and faster players....I think it is a reach to take him in the 1st round especially middle of the draft, it is one of those HUGE boom or bust picks....I know a lot of guys taken on a reach do not turn out like teams thought they would, he could end up being the steal of the draft or be the guy that gets the whole scouting staff fired IMO.

Kids don't necessarily drop for good reason. You think Fowler should've dropped in his draft year? The only knock I've heard on Teravainen is that he's small, which may cause issues in translating his abilities to the NHL.

I tend to believe in a very simple philosophy when it comes to player selection and development. Take players on a positive growth and development curve and stay away from guys on negative ones. Jankowski is on the upswing and there are a lot of people in the hockey world jwho are saying nothing but good things about this kid. That is a great thing and something that leads me to believe he's just atrted to blossom. Next season will be an interesting one to watch for this kid. We'll
earn a lot about him, and I think we'll be very pleased.

Sounds very boom/bust to me, given the level of competition he played against, though the same questions were asked about Kreider in 09 (was he that good, or was it the competition) and things seemed to work out OK for him.

Kid has a long way to go in terms of size though. His official measurements @ the combine were 6' 2.5" and 168 pounds. That's a friggin toothpick.

As mentioned before that is to be expected
- Youngest player in the draft (11months younger than Yakupov)
- Has grown over 8 inches over the past year and a half to two years.

People can criticize all they want, but Flames mgmt has the utmost confidence in this kid, and they sure as hell did their homework. When you're outside the top 10, sometimes you have to gamble instead of going with the safe pick. This may work out, it may not, but I'm excited to follow this kid.

Man Feaster really likes to put his foot in his mouth...what an idiotic statement.......I guess Edmonton will be trading Yak now for Jankowski....

man...feaster said...what everyone says....about their...first round...draft pick...that's so.... low of him, isn't............................................it?

I like how there was praise for the kid in the beginning of this thread, but now that the Flames have selected him, he's being scrutinized as a scrub.

Though it may be true to an extent, I love Jankowski at 21 + Siellof, but I wasn't expecting T.T. to be available @14th. I feel like Tuevo at 14th might play out to be better than Jankowski + Siellof, but only time will tell.

I'm still a fan of this draft pick, I'm just on the fence that T.T. at 14th might be a better draft pick.

Uh no....who else said their first round pick was going to be the best player of the draft down the road....ha ha....yeah...better then Yak...sure...

I'm here to take credit for my prediction, haha.

But seriously, it just made sense to me. CGY went for plenty of highly talented forwards last year. They did not have a 2nd this year (and next).

So the first overall pick is always assured of being the best p,ayer selected in their draft class? Keephoping that.We don'tneed to go very far back to find instances of players selected after the first pick of being better than that first pick overall.

Go back to 2006. Is Johnson the best player out of his class, or is Staal a better pick? How about going down to 22nd and Giroux? Johnson is lagging way behind in his draft class and is no where near as good as projected as the top pick.

How about 2003? Is Fleury the best player out of that draft or is Staal (there's a pattern here) better? What about Vanek, or Brown, or Parise or a list of there players?

I could continue on, but in every draft where there is not a generational talent involved it is a big crapshoot as to whether the first pick is going to be the best player in the draft. Iwould think that the odds of asomeone being better are quite high. The first guy is usually pretty good but there is no guarantee of him being the best. Withthis draft, I will go out on a limb and say Yakapov is not the best player and many players will surpass him as time winds along. There's just too much history to call him the best player from this draft.

It was smart of the Flames to take a chance on this kid in the first round. If he doesn't pan out, they can always get compensation for not signing the kid.

So what, he'll have plenty of time to bulk up at Providence College.
