That has a lot to do with how teams were reluctant to take small guys very high until recently with the exception of a player like Patrick Kane. Someone like Yamamoto would never have been taken as high as he was a decade ago. We are seeing quite a bit of success from smaller guys drafted top-10 since 2014 with examples like Ehlers (9th overall, 2014), Marner (4th overall, 2015), Clayton Keller (7th overall, 2016), and Quinn Hughes (7th overall, 2018). I think we are quite a bit removed from the era where someone like Gaudreau slips to the 4th, even if it happened only 9 years ago. There seems to have been a collective shift of thought on undersized players among NHL evaluators. Also, Drysdale is on the small side for a defender given his build. The only defenders smaller than him to go top 10 in recent years are Quinn Hughes and Adam Boqvist.
I mean, I can make a similar argument that a significant portion of the leagues best defenceman are found outside the first round (Keith, Subban, Weber, Giordano, Josi, Letang, Chara, etc), but I'm sure not using that as reasoning to avoid taking a stud defenceman high because there are good examples of top defenders being taken in the top 10 (Doughty, Hedman, Pietrangelo, Ryan Suter, Seth Jones, etc). The only thing in the NHL that is almost exclusively found in the top 10 of the draft are elite franchise centers with a couple of notable exceptions (ROR, Kopitar, Getzlaf, Bergeron, Aho, Barzal, Point), and 3 of those guys were taken in the teens.

At 14 in a U17 league he put up 40 pts in 18 games
At 15 in U17 elite he put up 51 pts in 29 games; and in U20 elite he put up 7 pts in 9 games
At 16 in U20 elite he put up 51 pts in 34 games
At 17 he made the jump / adjustment to NA 65 in 53 ...
At 18 120 in 56 .. I'd say he adjusted.

Anyone know his wingspan? That's more meaningful for a small player than anything. If he has bigger than normal puck-controlling area (wingspan vs. his height), and plays with a long stick like Datsyuk did, everything is possible.
If he doesn't have that, big-reach defencemen will shut him down pretty easily. The puck protection area disappears.
Talking about height is usually meaningless and valuable time for worthless debates, height vs. wingspan is the thing.

It kinda goes both ways.
Having a longer stick/arms helps for puck protection, but a shorter stick helps for deking/stickhandling. I doubt an inch or two makes a difference in his long-term development

I just saw a video on Austrian TV, where he said his main focus is to get faster and he is doing a lot get better in this area. He said the biggest difference between junior hockey and pro hockey is the speed of the game.
Btw. his skills coach is Rob Schremp, his doing a lot of stickhandling exercises as well

Selfishly I hope Rossi falls to #7, but I’d take him 3rd right behind Stutzle and ahead of Byfield.

Disagree, personally I prefer him to Raymond, and he’s hard to compare to Drysdale. They’ll take whoever is left of Stutzle/Byfield at 2, and IMO should be targeting one of Rossi/Drysdale at 5.
If they do come out of the draft with Rossi and one of Stutzle/Byfield, there’s a good chance that’s a stellar 1/2 punch at centre for ages. Centre is a huge position of need for them too, Logan Brown and Colin White are their only is talented younger centres, and both are far from locks to be top 6 guys. Something like Byfield/Rossi/Tkachuk/Chabot is a great core, and they’ve got up-and-coming prospects like Brannstrom, Batherson, etc. too.

Ah yeah, forgot about him. Norris, Brown and White are all talented, but certainly no blue chippers there. Getting 1-2 blue chip centre prospects in the coming draft (one of Stutzle/Byfield, and maybe Rossi) would be huge for the Sens.

Pinto too, but he will be a while. And Yeah that would be massive! To the posters point we literally have nobody on RW after Batherson and are a little weak on RD too
I think Byfield and Stutzle are both legit 1C's, so I see the argument for Raymond and Drysdale as well. A lot of good options though

I have a feeling that this is a player who will turn his "weaknesses" into strengths. His mindset towards growth and constant improvement is almost pathological and reminds me of some of the greats.

Yeah, Raymond and Drysdale are great prospects too, can totally see the argument for either one at 5. I’m just personally partial to Rossi, love his game, such a smart/complete player.

Someone who you’d say “I’d take this guy in the top 10-15 in a redraft of his draft year” (including guys who have already graduated). I’d say a blue chipper should look likely to become a star at the NHL level. If a draft produces 10 all-stars, that’s a pretty good year (most all time from a single draft is ~20 I think), so if you’re still top 10-15 a bit after the draft (say within 1-4 years), you’ve got a solid shot to become a star, and are thus a blue chip prospect in my eyes.

Maybe I'm missing something here but Pageau was no where near the prospect that Rossi is.
