C/LW Cole Perfetti - Saginaw Spirit, OHL (2020, 10th, WPG)

Guess I’m just confused on how this guy keeps getting knocked for size when he’s taller and bigger than Rossi.
Because he's probably the softest kid in the entire first round I would assume. He lacks intensity if he had both he would be a top pick.

I've just always heard the only thing you can't teach is how to find the back of the net and, with training, the skating can be improved. How much? That would be nice to know.

Corey Perry's skating has never been great but he made up for it by being big, mean (see dirty) and he could score. Perfetti isn't big or mean.
Look at Mark stone. Perfetti is significantly more talented.

I highly doubtful those are the only players they'd be looking at at #4

Unlike other draft years the guys in Europe will get to continue building a case next year, Yzerman said as much in his press conference. So some of them could possibly improve or hurt their current standing. Perfetti and Sanderson won't though unless the CHL gets going again which feels unlikely. But the two Swedish wingers, Lundell, Rossi and Askarov all should be playing before the draft. I think that could help Raymond a lot if he steps forward in a big way or Lundell who lost time to injury this past year and seems to have seen his stock take a hit in some rankings. For Rossi coming off an ideal year it is probably trickier, though he could show off skating gains and ability to play against men despite his frame in the NLA. We will see.

His defensive play and lower body strength are a fair bit better as well. (And faceoff ability).

Some is more matured and some isn't. When players seem to be currently at equal level and other has lot more room for development, I would skip the more matured.

Rossi sounds like the Chychrun of offense.

31 thoughts podcast, Consentino is saying Perfetti to Detroit at 4 is almost as big of a lock as Lafreniere going first apparently.

Theyll know him well with him playing in Saginaw. Jim Devellano and Osgood being owners means they probably have a real measurement of him and have an idea of how physically developed he is. If theres a team that can make the risk with him its Detroit, theyll have the most info

It'll be interesting to see if Perfetti can round out other parts of his game. In terms of pure offense he is tops in the draft. Deceptive shot, great hands, great passer. His IQ way up there.

In my opinion, Perfetti at 4 to Detroit isn’t a reach at all but the right pick given their needs (i.e. already strong RHD depth makes picking Drysdale less attractive).

You're probably going to get your wish, after how the lottery went I think Detroit probably takes him at #4 assuming the top 3 goes at .

They are going to have to get more out of his skating, but he actually kind of reminds me of Giroux. So we will see, certainly skating could be the issue, the team buying in on him must believe they can round out some of his athletic ability. His offensive ceiling is pretty massive in my opinion.

Yeah I don’t see G at all in him. G is a fiery competitor that was one of the fiercest forecheckers in the league early in his career in addition to being supremely skilled. That’s not Cole.

I don’t see him not being able to score in the NHL. Too much in the way of playmaking, shooting, sense, hands, creativity. I think the question is if Perfetti can drive the game and play all situations at his size and with his skating. He might be able to. Look at Nick Suzuki, and Perfetti probably is the more dynamic offensive player to begin with.

Does he even have that?
Honestly...Rossi has the same size and skating questions. While he has a more refined two-way game right now, he’s not going to be competing for the Selke and it’s not as if Perfetti is poor away from the puck.

It’s basically splitting hairs between who is most likely to be a C at the NHL level. Some people act as though it’s a given for Rossi, but I personally believe the odds are against both of them.

Perfetti CAN play center but that’s not where you’ll get the most out of him and I don’t think that’s where most GM’s are planning on playing him. So many top forwards in the OHL either get listed as C’s or play at C for some time because being a center obviously helps your draft stock. He’s going to be LW at the NHL level but he’ll be dynamic as hell. He’d be the perfect person to round out a line with Larkin and Zadina. Larkin as the solid two way center. Perfetti as Zadina’s set up man.

This quote from his coach is why I want Detroit to draft him.

"He's just scratching the surface, specifically with his body. If his body was more advanced, he'd be challenging for the first spot. When you look at this draft class 10 years from now, he'll be one of the top two or three guys."

Detroit is gonna be bad for a couple years bare minimum, so take him, let him develop in junior and keep hoping for lottery luck. Maybe 2 years from now hes hitting the league a little more developed with a Shane Wright type to play with. Detroit doesnt need a guy that can make a difference in the next 2 years and falling in the draft means they need the homerun type guy

A bit off topic but: I'd bet money his coach, Chris Lazary, is going to be a NHL coach in 5/6 years. Very much new age NHL/modern hockey philosophies as far as how guys attack and fluidity of forwards in the attacking zone. Never really gonna see his teams dump and chase.

What kind of Perfetti memes are we looking at? That's a big part of drafting a kid these days. "Goal" Perfetti? That's a little weak. Maybe something to do with Confetti? Or like Fetty Wap? Funfetti? Spaghetti? Sacco and Vanzetti? Serengeti. Sweaty yeti machete.

Depends on where he plays, but if he goes to a place with a lot of Italian-Americans I'd say "Perfetto Perfetti" (Perfetto = perfect in Italian).

The only thing I think Rossi definitively has over Perfetti as a prospect is likelihood of sticking at centre.

I thought it would be the other way around. Perfetti has the IQ to be a 2C, where as Rossi's size suggests he might be better on the wing.

You might be right. They both have the vision and puck patience to perform at C, but the lack of size and unexceptional skating combine to form a huge hurtle, and one that is pretty pointless to force when they project very nicely as wingers.

If I was Detroit I would consider moving back a couple of spots. Get some additional assets and grab Jarvis (who I believe has as good a chance of being a solid pro as Perfetti).

They are not in the same sphere in regards to IQ, playmaking and creativity. Jarvis is known for his relentless motor and determination more so than his pure skill, which is Perfetti's bread and butter.
