Although he was clearly not ready for the big club last year, we rushed him anyway despite a not so good camp/preseason. It still would have been interesting to see him play under a coach not named Eakins.

To my fellow Oiler fans do you rank him above or below Nurse?

Not sure. I have Nurse very highly regared, especially after his playoffs and AHL play. However im going to take Leon. Hes just so smart and so good at everything (except skating). His hockey IQ is tops for a prospect and thats what seperates him from Nurse. Nurse has outstanding defensive IQ and a physcial specimen, but offensively he has to figure it out. His offensive hockey IQ isnt at an elite or great level yet. He still just rushes it in and throws it at the net, he has to switch it up

As for LD, what a way to end junior

If he had spent his whole season in junior he probaly could have been WHL MVP as well as playoff and mem cup MVP. He is truely a special prospect. On par with Hall as a prospect I think

I have them about even. Both excellent prospects that have continued to steadily improve. I think its a little less likely that Nurse hits his maximum but D who can move the puck and generate some points but bring a real physical edge are what win cups. If the Oilers could only keep one it would be Nurse but only because of who else they have. Without RNH and Eichel I suspect they might want LD. Lucky they dont have to choose.

Well below Hall as a prospect

Drai has been Kelownas best player at both ends of the rink since he got their. He did have an adjustment period when he arrived but he was still the best player. As for getting easy match ups that's where your ignorance is blinding you. He plays against the other teams top players each and every nigh and he almost always has a defensive zone start.

I've seen Draisaitl play around 80 times and I have not once thought he had an attitude problem. His style can be deceiving in that it looks, at times, like he's "floating". He slows the game down to his level and is always in position so using his speed is not always his style.

The Rockets flat out wouldn't be where they are without Draisaitl.

Considering they were one of the top teams before getting Drai, they absolutely could have gotten to where they were without him. And when he first joined the team he centered the second line until Goulbourne got injured. Teams didn't have the depth to match that. Watch Drai and Merkley kills ya. Watch Merks and Drai kills ya.

You can tell yourself all you want it's a decieving style of play, but when you've seen with your own eyes what he's capable of when he moves his feet and hustles then you'd call what he does floating. He can get away with it in Junior, but he will have to make a more consistent effort at the next level.

I have noticed at times a lack of intensity. It's been brought up on the Oilers boards a bit. While I think it's just his style of play/skating it is a bit worrying. I think he relys on his smarts to put him in the right spots more so than his physical skills, which is a little concerning considering he's a big guy and could use his body a bit more.

I'm not sold on Leon.

He dominates junior, because he is physically more mature than almost every other player.
Mix in is obvious talent and he is unstoppable.

But at the NHL level, his physical advantage is nullified and he as of yet has not found the intensity to win battles. He still had skill, but until he finds another level of compete, he will struggle at the NHL level.

Not bashing him...
It is way easier to up your compete than to up your skill level!
I think losing last night is the best thing to happen to him.
Put a little fire in his belly!!! Losing feels worse than winning feels good!

Whether Leon makes it or not, it's 100% on him.

I agree, watching him play yesterday, he does lack intensity and the will to win board battles. When he gets the puck he makes stuff happen but I don't think it's going to be that easy in the nhl.

And this is why Oiler fans will never appreciate Leon...dude was very intense and played a great game! a little finish from the guys he set up and Kelowna are champs...

watch Kopitar, that guy never looks like intense yet has 2 Cups to his name

Actually he's great a winning board battles without intensity. Watch him retrieve the puck with his stick or shield it from the opponent.

LD is not an intense player. Fans are projecting an attribute he'll never possess. His biggest flaw is his first step acceleration which prevents him from constantly being in the play.

The Generals had a massive size advantage over the Rockets. If you want to find a great an example of physically mature junior players who will be AHLers ... look at McCarron, Hunter Smith, etc.. only maybe MDC and Cassels will be NHLers but I expect them to be bottom-6 types (eventually MDC might be B.Pouliot or Brian Boyle). The others are skill-less grinders.

For the record, I enjoy AHL and ECHL games. I love the intensity on how they play - more fights, hits, etc. But it's easy to see who has the skill to make it to the next level.

Ya, he is great at winning board battles at the junior level, because he has a distinct advantage over every player...either size or skill.
He doesn't need the intensity!
He won't succeed if he doesn't crank it up

good job by Oilers... he definitely needs AHL time and this is a way better option for his this year

Looked so good in camp. Doing the right thing

Nurse and LD in AHL. Oilers starting to be patient

This is the right decision. He looked great in training camp, but 20 games with 1C minutes will help him in the long run.

The Oilers are finally making the smart moves and letting their prospects properly season.

Bet you come up with a pretty elite list.

Draisatl can develop chemistry with
Yakimov 6'5" 232lb C #10 of the 18 year old russian scorers.

Hall-Mcdavid-Slepyshev
Pouliot-RNH-Purcell
korpikoski- Lander-Yakupov

when Eberle returns to RW around first week in NOV game 12-15.
Slepyshev can move to LW and Korpikoski drops down to 4th line
with Letestu-Hendricks/Klink.

He's plenty ready to be in the NHL, but there's no need to rush him. Let him prove that he can carry a pro team's offense, then bring him in. Like the approach.

I wanted him to start in the AHL even though he does look NHL-ready (as a winger). He should NOT be a winger and thus he needs to work on his faceoff against men and his first step.
