Oh I was surprised when I saw Minty out there on PP1 instead of Fowler. New coaching staff could have something to do with it too.

And I don't know if it interests you but Ducks legend Henry Thrun has been getting some run on the Sharks PP1 too. However, our coaching staff is absolutely idiotic and healthy scratching Thrun every third game apparently since Grier signed too many d-men in the offseason lol
Thread is about Carlsson so I'll keep it brief - no such thing as signing too many D. Thrun will grow into full time minutes when (if) he earns them.

Wish NJ had a similar philosophy. Watching players learn on the job based on their surname is painful at times.

I actually am in a 16 team Dynasty league and drafted him. Was he not sent to the minors after a solid start that’s what the fantasy app said. Was it just a paper transaction? It really confused me as it seemed he was also taking advantage of an opportunity.

Sorry for getting the thread off track.

Being an east coast Ducks fan I’m excited for todays early game to watch with my daughter. Usually it’s just me getting fired up at 1am 😂. Leo set the bar high after game one if he can build off that then the Ducks board might explode.

Now with Leo able to control the ice I wouldn’t even hate Zegras in front. With the skill that will be on that PP he doesn’t need everything running through him. Zegras may not be big in front but he will definitely have the best hands in tight of the net of anyone. Maybe I should just put down the joint though.

Feel bad for McTavish because he’s looked so good but he has to try and run the 2nd PP with the leftovers.
Eventually, Moravian will swap with strome and he can be a great net front pp guy. Lots of options!

I am a newer hockey fan from Australia, been following the NHL and prospects to some extent for a couple of years. Big fan of Leo and might become a Ducks fan, haven't really planted my flag anywhere, but I like the young group Anaheim has.
Anyways putting my inexperienced opinion to the test, it seemed like having Carlsson posted in front of the net on PP1 is the opposite of what you want to do with someone with his skillset. I think it was the second PP the Ducks had where their formation got shuffled due to the entry and Leo was above Zegras on the right side. The puck cycled around a bit and arrived at Leo where he slightly moved towards the middle and kept his eyes cross ice to draw the defender(s) in before shifting the puck quickly down to Zegras in space where he nearly lifted it past Oettinger's shoulder at a tight angle. Just seems like those sorts of plays are what you would want in a PP situation and Leo obviously can't do that plonked in front of the net. I get that he is big and you want him to assert his presence, but he is 18 and still needing to gain strength in certain parts of his body. Even when he is fully developed it strikes me as a waste of talent. Not sure if I am correct since I have not been watching hockey long :)

First off, welcome and Yup good observation. Leo needs to be able to make those plays, can’t do that parked in front of the net. This is yet another example of poor coaching and execution under assistant coach Brown who is running a horrible PP.

Look around the league, most players are Point per game players or higher because of their PP’s. Ducks need to figure it out, will also win more games.

It’s crazy to me they don’t have mctavish with first unit for his shot.

We usually get the zone pretty easily on powerplay all of Mintyukov zegras terry carlsson are capable of doing that… seems like we don’t really have anyone willing to shoot or a guy that is our “shot” option.

You sure sound like a Ducks fan :) (i had the same thought about Leo's placement on the PP as well, not a fan of him being the net front on the PP)
I don’t know where else he goes on the PP unless they don’t load up on talent. Z-Leo-Mac-Terry-Minty is the most talent we can put out for now. You could say put Mac in front, but his one timer is also the best on the team. Our PP coach also seems to suck so keep that in mind well. No way our PP should’ve been this bad last year and absolutely no excuse this year.

Minty is the best defender on the ice as a 3 game player. He is the complete package even has the physicality. He should be running PP1 from now on.

Carlsson shouldn't be on the net front. I would give that to McTavish and run:

Carlsson McTavish Zegras
Minty Terry

Though It is traditionally not a place you’d put a skilled playmaker like Leo. It probably isn’t the absolute best place for him to be.

Minty over Fowler on 1st PP for sure and I’m a big Fowler supporter. See above for my thoughts on Leo’s placement. The PP has to be fluid.

My wife's college roommate definitely agreed with the "no such thing as too many D" philosophy

.

We need net front presence, just shouldn’t be Leo who needs to be able to make plays. May need to throw someone like Rico on the top unit, for net front, which means someone has to move to the 2nd unit. They are running a 1A and 1B units anyway, so both units will get their PP time.

Definitely needs to be fluid. The Leafs refused to load up 1 powerplay for so long, because they had Willy and Marner essentially playing the same role. When they finally loaded it up with Matthews/Marner/Willy/JT it took em awhile to figure it out. But now you essentially have Matthews/Marner/Willy always being in motion along the perimeters/down low with Tavares typically being in front.

For the Ducks, if I had to take a crack at making the PP with Carlsson/McTavish/Zegras/Terry, I would probably have McTavish as the main net front with Carlsson on the right half wall. Encourage McTavish and Carlsson to constantly rotate between those two positions to open up McTavish for some shooting/one time options. Then on the left half wall I'd probably mainly have Zegras there, with Terry rotating down low/bumper position.

Ya I mean if it’s a 1A/1B situation I agree, but if it’s a load it up and let the top unit play 1:30 or whatever I think that’s a different conversation.

I think we need to load up. Which means if we keep our skill together someone will have to sacrifice one of their skills to be in front of the net. I think Mac has good enough hands to deflect shots in front. We would still have Terry and Zegras taking shots who both have good shots. As long as Leo is free to be able to make plays and retrieve the puck those are some of his strengths.

The 1A and 1B system isn’t working.

Definitely not a bad take. I don’t know, and I’m not claiming to be a hockey expert, but I do know with the amount of talent the PP shouldn’t be as putrid as it’s been.

If the first unit is consistently scoring then there isn't a need for a second unit. We just don't have the talent depth yet to run 2 good units.

For Thrun theyre just jerking him around in a way that makes little sense. However the cream rises to the top so we should expect him to rise because every other dmen we have is mediocre. Our coaching staff will see that eventually.

So the Sharks hired Dallas Eakins to be their coach. In hindsight the Ducks probably kept Eakins around as long as they did despite being a bad coach because he helped them Tank for Bedard.
Grier is smart, can't have Thrun ruining things.

David Quinn led the Rangers to Kakko and Lafreniere and now has led us to the 4th pick. There's a point you realize that he's a bad coach but a great tank commander lol

Really cogent analysis for someone new to the sport. My dad has been watching hockey on and off with me since I was a kid but a lot since the Golden Knights entered the league. I would still have to explain something like this to him.

1A and 3B is more accurate.
