I think it's more that people prefer Fantilli and I still do because athletes like him are hard to find but Anaheim is banking on the hockey IQ here

High level hockey IQ is just as hard to find; draft history is littered with busts who had physical gifts but never put it together because they lacked a toolbox.

There really was no wrong choice between those two, but Fantilli does have a style that really jumps out at you even in highlights. I'd have probably picked him too, however, as I like the frenetic pace he plays at.

I knew Carlsson was going to be good. A lot of people were flaming Anaheim for taking Carlsson, but if you actually watched him play, you would know that him and Fantilli were both pretty equal. I still would of taken Fantilli as I think there’s more upside for him, but Carlsson was putting up numbers that no one heard of since the Sedin Twins in a pro league at the age of 17.

Carlsson just has it. You can tell when someone just thinks the game better than everyone else, pretty quickly. When they do that, its such a safe bet.

He was confident, woulda never been able to tell it was his first game as an 18 year old.

He was vocal on the bench and on the ice and as the game went on he got more confident in his abilities.

Played smart in all 3 zones, but also got a good look into his skill offensively

Not a bad start to nhl career considering he’s had very minimal time on NA ice

Lundestrom,Tchistov,Smirnov,Tverdovsky, and I don't think Steel,Jones,Perreault, were/are being handled properly...Larsson was a flop and their best D-men Lindholm and Theodore were given away
what an awful, uninformed post

have you even watched the ducks since the 90s? lundestrom has developed into a pretty damn good defensive-minded C. not bad for a guy taken late in the 1st round

smirnov and chistov weren't rushed to the NHL, they simply weren't good. same thing with steel, who the ducks were more than patient with. same thing probably goes for jones at this point

tverdovsky put up back to back 50 pt seasons during the DPE after returning to anaheim from phoenix, so not sure why you mentioned him

theodore and lindholm? two of the better d-men in the game today who were brought up in the ducks system? why even mention them if you're trying to make it seem like the ducks have a tendency to rush prospects?

Great clip package from his first game. A good handful of positive impact plays against a very good opponent.

He also was relatively rusty after sitting 2 games.
If we go back to his last preseason game, I think he took over that game. We didn't see that quite yet last night, but him being completely adequate to hang on our top line is insane already. He should only get more comfortable from now on. Let's see how the long season treats him

I don't mean to overhype this guy, but I think he can be the next Lemieux. :sarcasm:

A great debut, but I want to see him hold it together over the course of the season and really put Bedard through his paces in the Calder race.

As a fan with zero actual experience playing hockey, I'd agree that Carlsson plays a mature game that is translating well. It's not just effort and hustle 100% of the time, he knows when to apply most of his energy at the right time.

Good strong and mature début with well-rounded playing, I hope he keeps it up. I'm so glad that he went to Anaheim so that I didn't have to endure Columbus picking Smith over him, as was rumoured.

Apparently the plan is to rest him a lot so if that ends up being something they stick to, I don't see how he can challenge Bedard or whoever else for the Calder.
That being said, I'm pumped on this player.

A great game by Leo. You can see what they saw in him...big body, protects the puck well, always choses te best

Thanks for posting. This guy just sees the ice so well. I can see why Anaheim took him 2nd.
