C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

Whos credible that questions his skating? Lol, what an ignorant take that would be.
Perhaps it mostly came from endless comparisons to Fantilli. Fanta is exceptionally great skater, so Leo, as most of the NHL players would do, kind of pale in comparison. I think it was EliteProspects who explained he actually skates decently himself. He's no Fantilli as far as explosiveness and footspeed goes, but yeah, Leo is at the very least decent skater already.

Yes, its like if youre not hanging with Mcdavid youre a bad skater now. Incredible.

I do wish he'd be more willing to shoot at top flight. I echo that the skating concerns are just not a thing. He could use more work on his first few steps still, but when he gets moving he's actually pretty fast. Just that I've noticed he's a lot more willing to shoot if the offense is already set up but when he would be the one attacking the net, he almost always looked for a hand off pass. It created chances and got him a couple assists today but with his combo of strength on his skates and solid top end speed, he could be even more effective if he'd shoot in those situations.

In any case, the kid is quite obviously a top end prospect. I'm excited to see how he looks in training camp/preseason. Would be nice to see him on a line with some experienced NHL players.

Ya you can tell he doesn't have a ton of confidence in his shot quite yet, but that will come with time.

Carlsson's understanding and performance of the center position I do really believe is the best of his draft class. Bedard and Fantilli might prove to be the more talented hockey players, in fact that's maybe likely, but Leo is going to turn in a 15+ year NHL career of consistent 1C production.

Think Kopitar, Sundin, Getzlaf, Zetterberg, H. Sedin. Maybe not top of the table production but year after year of top 5-10 position play. That's my way too early prognostication for this player.

The way he reads plays and execute, makes me think he will start in Anaheim (and not San Diego). A few things to clean up still, but that might be rust and learning the new teammates.

Have a feeling he can play with anybody. In Anaheim he should have better linemates and at the same time tougher matchups, but just a feeling he should be able to hang.

He has looked as advertised. No standout special skill but somehow he's in the middle of constant offensive pressure. Last game he played PK with Nesterenko and I think they created more offense than the PP opposition.

One other thing I want to note is his size and strength is a really big asset. In the two rookie tourney games he's played he would get neutralized more from sticks in lanes, but no one has been able to muscle him off the puck and I noticed both Vegas and Colorado's rookies stopped trying to after initial attempts.

I would like to see him engage more with body on body challenges around the boards and in the corners though. He seemed more keen on trying to knock pucks away with his stick but he has the size and strength to impose himself on puck carriers, he just doesn't have that tendency yet.

Which seems logical after playing against men and that not really being an advantage at that level currently. He'll get there but thats a benefit of playing pro already, hes playing in a way that will work for him against men as he continues to fill out and get more confident physically. Will be a big jump going against Colorado and Vegas' main teams obviously

True but I think it's a continuation of his time in the SHL and worlds. Grown men struggled to out muscle him.

Yeah but its a personality trait and not a switch to flip. For a guy who wasnt always the biggest it makes sense. In the long run it will probably be beneficial and help him play multiple styles for whatever a specific game calls for. You obviously cant go out there for 82 games pretending your Eric Lindros but once Anaheim is a playoff contender he'll understand all of this, it will be a big change for him but he'll get there. A guy like Slafkovsky plays like hes always been the biggest guy on the ice so now hes gotta learn to protect himself, its obviously better for everyone when a player learns the other way around like Carlsson is

I'm not sure if it's because I've let posters on this forum gaslight me into believing he was a bad skater, but his skating has blown me away this tournament

It was always about his explosiveness. Some extrapolated it to skating overall for some reason, but once he gets some speed he's been hard to contain.

Which leads me to a question to those Ducks fans who have watched the ongoing games: how's his explosiveness looking now after a summer of working on it?

He isn't McDavid, but for some reason people act like he is a train getting started moving. I see huge improvement even from the WC.

His skating looks good and his first step looks really good for a guy his size. Look at the goal in the tweet above. He goes from feet not moving almost standing still to around the defender on the puck really quickly.

I think he moves quickly because he’s an ultra competitive guy. Wouldn’t say that necessarily makes him a great skater though. When I personally see a great skater I think that this guy has good skating mechanics, which his don’t stand out in any particular way. Ultimately I don’t think it matters if he’s a good skater or not because as others have mentioned his competitive nature to win races allows him to move quickly and be a powerful presence that’s hard to contain. It’s working for him

With each passing game and watching Leo it’s making the Zegras hold out less painful.
