C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

Love this in the end, steals the puck and creates a scoring chance, so Getzlaf like…

Anaheim fans should be smiling. Here's Elite Prospect's scorecard on Fantilli and Carlsson:

Fantilliz, z score (EP).png

That void in Fantilli's scorecard is scary for any prospect projected to be a center. Compare that to Carlsson against men in the SHL, Carlsson projects more of a center than Fantilli today. And what is surprising is that Carlsson is better a OZ retrievals than the much faster Fantilli. Guess Carlsson has enough speed and hockey sense to win more pucks and extend the offensive possession.

Does the OZ retrieval stat mean he’s winning the races to the puck, or taking the puck back from the opponent in the OZ, or both? In highlights I’ve seen of him, he’s actually very good at getting the puck from his opponent in the OZ.

Also only looks like it tracks 7 games of Fantillis vs 20 of Carlsson’s. Would like to see a larger sample size for Fantilli.

For OZ retrieval, it's probably both of racing to the puck and winning the puck back. In the EP's earlier video, they show how Carlsson uses his body to shield the puck first from the opponent and then secures the puck. It's a very boring and subtle act, but very valuable in extending offensive possession, which EP does document.

Here's an earlier scouting review of Carlsson by EP. It's a one game review that was published 8 months ago. I timestamp the start to show an example of puck retrieval:

It's just only one game breakdown, but in that breakdown it reveals so much about Carlsson that remains true. That game was in October, before the WJC-20.

Great video, he’s such an exciting prospect.

This is also a pretty good one I’ve found that goes shift through shift of a full game. Some boring shifts here and there, but just about every time he touches the puck he makes something happen. And mind you, this was 9 months ago so since then he’s progressed even further.

Oh nie, I will watch it later. Nice that in the first shift he goes in after the dump in and makes a hit at the boards. As he grows into his body, he should be using it more and more.

Any word on if he'll do another seasons in SHL?

This has been one of the biggest debates on the Ducks forum. I heard that he plans to attend Ducks camp in September so it gets dicey. Since the SHL season will have started by then. It’s possible be can go back but I think it’s too much back and forth for him.

I personally expect him to go pro. Just not sure if it’s AHL or NHL.

Perusing twitter it seems he was a bit disappointing at camp
He’s not a flashy player, so he didn’t necessarily stand out in the 3v3 scrimmage. Most here aren’t really worried, but the fans on twitter who probably only had opinions on who we should take based on draft boards, are probably justifying their position on the matter over a meaningless skills comp.

You mean Dev camp, a meet & greet of rookies and non-NA pro players along with getting their baseline athleticism on the books? The twitterverse is upset that Carlsson didn't flash often enough at a 3v3 exhibition scrimmage.

Pay no attn to twitter as their scope is minuscule and full of recency bias.

Either SHL or NHL for him.

If Anaheim is trying to develop him as a center, then it's either the SHL or AHL. I'd feel terrible for Orebro (SHL) if they're set on making Carlsson their 1C, but are going to miss him to start the season and hope he returns. Maybe Anaheim will know further ahead to avoid this problem for Orebro.

They have to know it’s always an option when a player is Carlssons caliber.

It happens every year to european teams

In a podcast interview, John Davidson (CBJ President of Hockey Ops) said that Josef Boumedienne (CBJ head scout) was with Team Sweden and was "blown away" by Carlsson's vision and work ethic. He said Carlsson is going to be a superstar.

That really caught my attention because typically when asked about another team's player Davidson would usually be pretty quiet.

Edit - It was the Bob McCown podcast. Here is the link:

Psst, the SHL is a professional league in which grownups are playing and gets paid doing so

A lot of that was based on the 3v3 scrimmage I think, and I think he was just drained by that point. He played a full season against men, had WJC in the middle, played in SHL playoffs, WC (against men again), came to the US for draft, had to drive from NY (?) to Nashville, do all the media stuff, come out to Anaheim a couple days after, and do the whole rookie camp. If he's not a guy that naturally likes to be the center of attention in interviews/media stuff, that can be mentally and emotionally draining. Doing all this stuff as an 18 year old, he's got to be exhausted.

That's interesting. They probably were just gonna be happy with whoever they got at 3 then

Wherever he is, he needs to be playing center

Aren’t controlled entries easier on bigger ice?

Technically they should be. But no ones giving you ice there as well, I think skating means that much more on European ice as you have a bigger place to skate to but Carlsson wasn't using his skating to blow by. If anything, the eye test in highlights show that Carlsson loves to take the middle to carry the puck which is quite encouraging.

But still, great point that those stats are from different ice size.
