C Leo Carlsson (2023, 2nd, ANA)

I don’t understand the stats. But if he does well in SHL who’s ahead of him for #2?

I liked his play but I wonder if he wouldn’t be even better at center than on the wing. He’s a smart player, technical, and at 6’3’’ and 194 lbs he isn’t exactly small either.

Michkov should go ahead of him.

Cause he and Bedard are the two most promising players in the draft this year.
I agree the mitchkov should be easy number two...but with his contract going in the KHL till what is it 2026 and the unknown of prospects from Russia...some might feel the need to stay in Russia now...will be interesting for sure....

as for Carlsson I really like his hands, vision, IQ and passing skills...I feel he has to play with more intensity than he does, I find him a little lazy in transition but his offensive skills are great.

Fantilli IMO will go 2nd, the only thing i have with Fantilli is he sometimes rushes things and gets ahead of himself, but the skills with the intensity he plays with are a little better than Carlsson.

Every time I’ve watched him this year I feel like he’s been on the wing. I see him listed as a center, but I don’t think I’ve seen him play center.

What is his natural position?

Been switching back and forth. I would say he's a natural centre but first year in Örebro juniors he played wing, then last year at center and now with pro team back to wing. Young players usually have their first years of pro hockey playing at wing, was the same with Elias Pettersson for instance.

Center is his natural position and he looks like a natural center even when he plays wing.

It’s super common for teenagers in European men’s leagues to play winger even if they’re natural centers. Tomas Hertl, who is as natural a center as exists, played wing in the Czech Extraliga in his draft and draft+1 year.

He’ll be center in the NHL. Probably splitting time his first few seasons between W and C.

Might, but shouldn’t
talent wise Michkov is obviously better but with hes contract and this russian war ( wont finish anytime soon ) and Carlsson/Fantilli being big natural skilled centers i dont see them being picked after

if he was already in NA playing in the CHL he would without a doubt go #2

obviously its just my opinion who knows what X team picking at 2 will do ( but if its the Habs i would bet anything they pass on the russian )

I think this kid is going to be a heavy all-purpose play-driving #1C in a few years. Easily #2 for me as well.

How come everyone is so certain he will be a center in the NHL? Last time he has played C full time is J18, in all international tournaments he has been on the wing, in J20 he spent more time on the wing and in SHL he has been primary a wing.

He played full time center in J20 last season. Fancies himself a center, too, but coaches get blinded by skill and force skill on the wing as a response. If that isn't Swedish I don't know what is.

For example Pettersson played on the wing in the SHL(in his D+1 when he led the league in points!), and internationally(As did Zibanejad, & heck, as did Eriksson Ek at his first WJC).

It's about his attributes, how he thinks, and how he plays the game. Well, put it this way: there's a reason the comparisons thrown around have mainly been Kopitar, Malkin, Sundin, & Barkov.

It's not uncommon for young players to play on the W in pro leagues in Europe.

All you have to do is watch him play. He's a center, through and through.

What's the consensus on Carlsson's speed?

His top end speed appears to be as fast as Dylan Strome.

He negates this in two ways:

1) He's so strong on the puck so he bodies his way past defenders. In the NHL defenders are stronger and faster.

2) He's a great stickhandler. In the NHL there is far less time and space to pull off these moves.

So does this become a problem at the next level? I'm fully confident he'll be a middle sixer at worst, but does this prevent him from becoming elite?
