Ugly game by Moncton and Barbashev. -6 and no dangerous shots, absolutely run over. Anyone watch the game? Insight?

It was tough for him and Garland against Quebec, especially on the road. Barbashev finished the series against Quebec with 2 points (in the 2nd game) and a -9. He had 19 points in 12 games and was an even +/- before that series. He only had 4 shots on goal in 2 games and no scoring chance.

His line was paired against Kurt Etchegary, Adam Erne and Anthony Duclair. Etchegary, Erne and Duclair completely dominated them. Ryan Graves also did a good job keeping Garland and Barbashev on the outside.

After a long series, it looked like he had nothing left in the tank.

Not surprised, it felt like his line was always on the ice during game 2, if they relied on them playing that much throughout the playoffs no wonder he'd be exhausted.

How does a 19 year old from the Q get assigned to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL? He won't be 20 until December.

Doesn't matter. If he turns 20 this year he is AHL eligeble. Happens every year with late birthdates.

Isn't it 20 before the 1st Jan.? Now if he was reassigned, then brought back, that would be interesting.

Junior Age = birth year

For the season that starts in 2015, players that are born in 1995 are considered ''20 years old''.

Some late birthdays like Barbashev will get assigned to the AHL even though they are 19, but they are considered 20 because they will turn 20 before 2016.

Totally off topic...but...

what do junior hockey players in their post draft year and over agers do all day considering they are done high school? Do they have part time jobs...what do they do? Being stuck in a small town and doing what?

From the WHL players I have met "done" was definitely the correct choice over "graduated".

I supposed getting serious about fitness and training, getting a hot tail and play NHL all day

Where did he play in juniors? Isn't there a European junior league loophole?

I think so. Not sure if it still exists. I think Girgensens did it. It was beneficial for him. I think with the state of kid athletes, they should consider an exemption of some sorts. It would hurt the minor leagues, but I think it's time.

Not totally off topic...

Barbashev is russian. Russians graduate at age 17. Some of them hockey players have a couple of years at the university under the belt by the age 19. Also many european players have an obligation for military or alternative service at age 18(lots of finnish players actually do their time there).

Of course most of them seriously push for a professional career and many just dedicate their time to hockey alone, but I always like the guys who think ahead and actually try to get some education apart from hockey.

I graduated 5 months short of my 18th birthday. Not sure that's all that special.

I graduated at 17... heck, I'm not quite 21 and I'm in my 4th year of university. It's not a big deal for Canadians with a late birthday either. I understand the rule difference though. It's because of the CHL agreement.

As a few have said, there's your answer.

PS: According to AHL by-laws: "Per AHL By-Laws, the age limit for eligibility to compete in the American Hockey League is 18 years or over, on or before September 15 of each season of competition."

However, for players drafted while in the CHL, they have to be 20 before December 31, or can play once their junior team is eliminated.
